    ▧ℌ▨ Surprise, surprise— he had nearly lost his balance as Momoji’s weight slammed against his back. Should he still be doing this? He was growing and would soon be too big to be jumping on people’s backs. Oh well, Haru supposed that it was best to use this time wisely. 

    “Hi Momiji… You’re still here… and so late? Wasn’t your father supposed to take you home?” Had he forgot? It would have been a shame if the bunny had been left here on his own.

Momiji nuzzled his head into the back of Haru's, clinging rather more like a monkey than a rabbit. "Nope! He went back with Mamma and Momo. I'm supposed to wait here until Hatori can come get me. That means I have the whole building to myself!"

It hurt in a place he didn't like to think about - deep down in his chest - to know that he was left behind because his Mamma had showed up unexpectedly for a surprise dinner. But she and Momo would have a great time with Papa and he could deal with waiting for Hatori to finish with Akito's check up to come get him if that's what it took.

"What are you doing here, huuuh, Haru? Huh huh huh?" As he asked he bounced slightly to emphasize his point.

She blinked, more than just a couple of times, her hands loosening around the spool of the kite as she heard the words the hyperactive little rabbit said to her. I trust you. How well did Momiji know her? She couldn’t help but wonder, but as she was about to disagree, she noticed the kite was flying farther out and her grasp on the string had loosened. “Oh shi—-“ Isuzu reached out, grabbing it before it got out of control, as a nervous laugh echoed around her and she turned dark eyes on Momiji again. “You were saying?” She almost couldn’t help the laugh, she couldn’t remember the last time she did laugh. It seemed forever, probably when she was with Haru.

Miji’s eyes followed the kite, large brown orbs tracking the bright spot of colour as it skated along wind currents every few seconds, tugging itself forwards with no regard to those that held it to earth.

  Turning, he gave Isuzu a smile. “Wow, you’re really good at that R-” he cut off, watching as her hands loosened on the spool for a moment before reaching out and grabbing it again with a short, half-aborted curse. He began clapping and cheering immediately. “Woah, that was so cool! Can you do it again?”

   —— ᒥ 猴 ᒧ   As to be expected —— the monkey flinched as he was pulled into a random embrace by the zodiac rabbit, letting out a sort of squeak of unexpectancy. Although, as soon as he was entirely sure of Momiji’s presence, the monkey was able to let out a soft giggle and present a light smile upon his feminine features.

He held a palm up to kindly reject the offer, but the smile never once faltered from his features. He could only dream of having the energy and excitement Momiji carried with him — if only. “It’s really nice to see you, Momiji,” Ritsu greeted.

The rejection of his dango only served to widen Momiji's grin and he popped the rest of the dumplings in his mouth all at once. Cheeks bulging at the sides where he munched happily on the treat, Momiji didn't really bother to swallow before speaking - it took too much time, you know?

" 'oo too," he enthused. The rabbit took a step back to give Ritu a once over, still chewing rapidly. A thoughtful look crossed his eyes and he circled Ritu once, twice, still looking him over before stopping. A loud swallow and a visible lump as the dumplings made their way down his throat later, Momiji beamed and pointed accusingly at Ritsu, all smiles. 

"You look nice today," he chirped. And it was true - his cousin looked more at ease than he had seen him in a long time and his kimono was pretty. Momiji was glad for him.

Isuzu’s forehead creased as she watched the hyperactive rabbit hop around. She couldn’t quite believe that he was so active, especially at this time in the afternoon. Shaking her head she crossed her arms over her chest and followed him towards the hill and then looked up at the sky to see the blue kite flying back down towards her. She arched a brow when he held out his hands and then shoved the spool into her own. She almost dropped it, because of her arm positioning and then looked down at it with a confused expression. Yes, of course the uma had flown a kite before (in fact, she was being reminded of her childhood because of it) but she hadn’t expected Momiji to thrust it into her hands and then ask her to fly it. “I—- uh—- dunno—-“ However, as she went to protest a gust of wild flew by and caught hold of the kite and the girl had no other choice but to pull to keep control over the damn thing. “—- shit,” She mumbled, still seeing Momiji as a kid, even though he wasn’t, as she looked up at the kite. “If I lose it it’s your fault.”

    Nodding encouragingly, Miji's eyes lit up with excitement and his grin grew to distressingly large proportions with his anticipation. "Go on, it'll be fun!"

    His encouraging words caught around the same time the wind did and he let out a whooping cheer, clapping his hands together and racing off to stay positioned below the kite at all times. "I trust you, Rin-chan, don't worry!"

    He caught sight of a flick of red hair the edge of a kimono and was upon him in an instant, calling out loud "Ri-chaaaan~" as the only warning before an arm came around Ritsu's neck and jerked him into a far too enthusiastic embrace.

    Pulling back, Momiji beamed wide and jovial at Ritsu before sticking out a half eaten dango in offering to his anxiety ridden relative.

    He caught sight of a black and white head just as it rounded a corner of the complex. A grin blossomed over Momiji's face, lighting it up, and a loud, jovial "Haru!" burst from his lips and he began racing forwards.

    The myriad of artfully spaced buildings echoed his small footsteps back at him, tattooing out a warning for his cousin of his arrival just before he launched himself bodily forwards and collided with Hatsuharu's back.

Isuzu blinked a couple of times as she watched as the kite went soaring through the air.

It brought back memories of when she was younger and her father would take her out to fly a kite. Of course she couldn’t truly do things that normal father and daughters could do – like he couldn’t carry her upon his back as they threw the kite out onto the wind… but the memories still came back all the same. “—- You really like flying your kite don’t you?”

She wasn’t sure what it was that made Momiji so peppy – how he could be so happy when everything bad had happened to him. Maybe if he could bottle that and sell it, she would be the first customer. Understanding how to blot out the darkness and let some sort of light, whether feigned or not, take over, might have been nice. “—- I mean it’s kinda dumb.” As blunt as ever. “But I should have expected that from you.” Maybe it was a feeling of being… free?

Momiji ran with the kite, letting it tug him along but only so long as he was within clear seeing distance of his cousin. The moment it began taking him too far away he'd change direction with a happy sound and race back towards her.

He nodded emphatically in response to her question and shoved the half unwound spool into Isuzu's hands before running around her in a short circle and encouraging her to fly it. "Go on Rin-chan, pull it!"

Ryuk looked down at the boy, glad he hadn’t been seen yet. Oh well, he’d have to give the whole speech eventually anyway. He jumped from the tree, not so silently, fading into a more human-like form as he dropped from the branch he was on.

"I am the shinigami Ryuk, I’m the one who dropped that notebook."

A rustling of the tree above him stilled the hand that had reached out to open the notebook and study its contents - perhaps finding an address he could return it to.

Curious brown eyes drifted upwards and immediately blew wide at the sight of a - man? - falling down gently as if supported by the air itself. 

Momiji let out a gasp of alarm, gripping the book in his fear and holding it out to the... had he said shinigami?

He repeated the word aloud, testing it for accuracy.

"Shini...gami? I - oh! This is yours!" He extended the notebook further, distressed expression melting into a smile as he understood what was happening.

“Whoaa—- whoa, Momiji;” The temptation to let the darkness and her coldness take over her all over herself was strong, but unfortunately she knew that she couldn’t. She could have easily had told him to go and find someone else to play with… but this was stopping her from having to go anywhere near their cousin for her check-up… and poor Momiji had been dealing with everything to do with his mother and sister. And she somewhat understood. “—- Okay, okay—-” She gushed, throwing her head back and rolling her eyes. “Just—- go easy.” She didn’t need him to run through the estate and bang into a girl and then transform into a rabbit. Sure, the Sohma family knew about the curse, but she didn’t want to deal with holding onto a rabbit until he transformed back. Tohru may have, but she wasn’t up for that. “—- Just don’t let go.”

His smile didn't waver a bit when she displayed reluctance. Instead, he gently let go of her hand and steeled himself for her departure. He was fine on his own, you know. And he didn't even have another kite -

"Yay!" he belted, and a small circle around her illustrated his enthusiasm for her assent. His smile increased tenfold and bled into his eyes until they crinkled up past the point of seeing.

Whatever terror he felt at spending the day wandering the estate alone to avoid going home and sitting in his empty house dissipated as if it were never there to begin with and he nodded. Gripping the kite more tightly, he put on a terribly serious face and looked up to watch the blue material take flight high in the sky. His resolved expression descended into one of awe as he observed it. "Wow, look how high it's going!"

      Ryuk, for some reason had a slight soft spot for children. He wasn’t super soft towards them to the point he ‘aww’ed’ over them or anything. No, he saved all of his affections for the Human World fruit, apples.

      However, he did nudge the kite as he passed by so that it floated to the ground and the child could actually reach it. Also as he passed, his second notebook slipped out of his hand and landed on the boy.

      “Well, damn….that’s unfortunate.”

He hopped in place, trying still to get someone to give him a boost or reach the kite for him. It turned out to be a textbook exercise in futility, as a strong gust of wind knocked the kite free. Reaching out to it,  his joyful cry turned pained as he was knocked in the head with a thin, leather-bound book.

"Ow," he whined, rubbing his head where it hit it. 

Reaching out, Momiji's hand drifted, undecided, between picking up his kite or picking up the small book. He glanced up briefly, looking to see if someone in the tree had dropped it, and - upon seeing no one - picked it up.

Small hands dusted bits of grainy rock from the smooth surface and read the front aloud in a curious voice. "Death... Note?"

The horse’s eyes widened as she looked at the bouncing boy. She couldn’t stop the bright red blush that crawled over the plumpness of her cheeks. “—- Huuuhh uhh… uh.” She grimaced, her eyebrows curving as she tried not to tell Momiji off for complimenting her! Isuzu wasn’t used to having anyone truly complimenting her, Hell, even when Hatsuharu complimented her it made her blush and crawl under an imaginary rock too! She furrowed her brow as she listened to Momiji and began to feel a little sick deep down at the conversation and where it was heading. Whenever she heard the name A K I T O her whole body would go rigid and stiff. The Sohma always hated hearing Akito’s name, it put her right back there in that room when he pushed her out of the window. “—- You should be careful though, Momiji,” She warned, “Not to get caught that is.” Isuzu didn’t want Momiji to end up getting as hurt as she did. She knew what it was like to grow up without parents… well, she had the first few years of her life, when they pretended that they loved her and then the abuse started. In a way Isuzu knew how Momiji felt, and she wanted to ensure he didn’t get hurt either. As much as she always seemed to drive a wedge between herself and the other Sohma members, she had a one track mindset now. Break the curse. She had already lost Hatsuharu, at least if she broke the curse, she could help keep him safe.

“I won’t tell. Do you not have school today?” She questioned as she tilted her head curiously. “I’m too sick to go to class today,” She was in some way —- but she was too sick to go to class —- she had decided that on her own!

The warning went straight in one ear and out the other. In lieu of a response, Momiji darted forwards and grabbed his cousin's hand, dragging her along behind him. "I don't have to be in class for a whole hour! Come and play with me!"

He pulled her until a gust of wind blew past and, free of the trees, he could release his kite and watch it go up, up, up and away with nothing but a thin string keeping it anchored to him.

“—- Yeah, yeah yeah,” Isuzu replied after Momiji was settled on the ground with his kite in his clutches. The uma moved her hand to her hair and began to shake free some of the loose leaves that had fallen along with the blue fabric. “Just don’t tell anyone,” She teased, a somewhat timid smile crossing her lips.

Isuzu wasn’t one for small talk, or chit-chat —- to be open and honest with people unless it was to be brutal and harsh. However with the likes of Kisa, Hiro and Momiji she couldn’t help herself. Yes, Momiji may have not been as young as the prior two mentioned, but he didn’t act like he was older. He definitely didn’t act the same age as Hatsuharu, and she often told herself not to dawn too much on that thought.

She shook her head and placed a hand upon her hip. “You hanging out at Hatori’s again?” Isuzu questioned, knowing her own reason for being so close to that part of the main estate was because Hatori wanted to have another check up to see how she was doing after her fall. Isuzu… well, she could have happily turned around and stormed all the way to Kagura’s house.

His grin reached new heights at her teasing, his surprise and delight spelled plainly across his expressive features. 

"Rin-chan, your smile is so cute," he exclaimed, and immediately he continued on with, "You should smile more often!"

Dancing backwards, Momiji began plucking bits of twig and leaf from his kite and shook his head. "Nope! Just me, now! Akito says that me being around Mamma is too big of a risk so I gotta live on the other side of the complex." He winked at her. "But I still come out and play with my kite in the middle so I can see Momo and Mamma when they go to school. Don't tell!"

“—— hmm,” She looked at the little bouncing blonde as he tried his best to catch hold of kite that had floated all the way up into a tree. Isuzu moved over to Momiji and then looked towards the kite, “Alright—-” She mumbled as she nodded her head. “Just be glad I came along and not some other girl.” The last thing that other girl would have needed would have been to try and help some boy that would turn into a rabbit? “Y’ready?”

The horse then moved down onto her knee and placed her hands together on the cap to see if Momiji could reach the kite. Even though she could probably have just tried to grab hold of it herself. He seemed determined to do it himself.

Momiji pouted at her, a glint of mischief still managing to peek through his gaze where he levelled it on his cousin. "I wouldn't have asked if it was some other girl," he protested loudly.

Nodding his assent as her question, Momiji immediately made himself at home on her hands and lept up, snatching at the kite once - twice - before he managed to grip the tail and y a n k. 

The kite came free with a shower of leaves and he leapt down, spinning in circles with it held out in front of himself while he sang out his thanks. "Thank you, thank you, thank you Rin-chan!" he trilled loudly. "You're the best!"

“I love all those too!” She exclaimed. She was already enjoying this conversation, just for the sheer fact that she and this boy seemed to have so much in common. And on top of that, he was so adorable! “Chocolate is my favorite though, mmm~.” She took a moment to imagine the chocolate ice cream she was looking forward to. And somehow that transitioned to her swimming in a pool full of chocolate, mountains of different color and flavored ice cream in the back ground, candies and cherries hanging from the tree above her. If she just opened her mouth…

And she snapped herself out of her daydream upon remembering that she was actually talking to someone right then. She turned her body to face the boy, extending her hand congenially. “I’m Usagi, what’s your name?”

"Chocolate is great!" Momiji exploded, his arms going wide and his face lighting up with power of his grin. "You should get chocolate and green tea, one scoop each, and I'll do the same and we'll have chocolate green tea ice cream!"

The idea was so enticing that Momiji found himself spinning a small circle, ice cream cones filling his every thought and swimming around his vision sweetly with happy faces that begged to be his friend. 

Speaking of friends - a small hand shot out to grip Usagi's and shake it vigorously. "Hi Usagi, I'm Momiji!"

   "Could you gimmie a boost? My kite's stuck and I can't seem to -" He jumped, arms outstretched, and tried hard to grip the tail of the blue kite as best he could. "Reach it!"

The gesture was appreciated, yet Mithos had to wonder if the boy knew what he was saying, if he was truly up to such a task. For all they knew, it was impossible to locate those lands of which were familiar to him. They had at least had some hope, as he had somehow reached this place, but one could not depend on that solely. It was not enough for certainty, for security.  

When asked for the specifics of his current state, the half-elf would begin by simply nodding his head in assurance. He was alright, though he was indeed concerned, for he had no knowledge of whether this land was more or less accepting  –  whether or not he could rest his mind here. 

” If you insist.  I’m lost, as I told you before; I don’t recognize this place, or even the city name of “Tokyo”. I sense that will be a problem.”

     Momiji's head lilted to one side, his face a picture of curiosity. "How did you get here, then?" he queried. "Did someone kidnap you? Or did you just fall asleep on a bus? I once fell asleep trying to get back to my house and wound up in Kyoto. But I found someone who helped me get back home Maybe I can help you!"
