please keep in mind that learning is always a process. learning to draw, dance, play an instrument, but also learning to say no, learning to start conversations, learning to be more comfortable in your own skin. it’s great setting goals for yourself, as long as you allow yourself to get there gradually instead of immediately wanting to be the best at it (and setting unrealistic standards for yourself because of it). change is rarely a single moment during which everything suddenly shifts, but rather a period of time in which you learn and adjust and improve. you’ll get there, but you must give yourself time to do so.

(2/2)  “My mother died on July 6th, 2005.  One day toward the end of her life, we were in the subway together, carrying heavy packages, and I could see she was exhausted.  She turned to me and said: ‘A ganzeh leben is a schlep.’  Which means: ‘All of life is a schlep.’  And for a moment I felt her pain.  I realized I could still love her.  She couldn’t love me, but I could love her.  Despite all the abuse she’d given me, I could feel her pain.  I resurrected this old photo after her death.  She’s with her first husband.  It was weeks before he was taken away. we wake up with the sun, fill our bellies with fruit, and pedal away on our bicycles, don’t stop until the blue sea greets us. i shake the sand out of my hair, watch him while he swims, rub rosewater on his sunburn. evening comes and we have grass stains on our knees and kick the futbol with bare feet. i teach him how to do a somersault and he watches me do cartwheels. we fall asleep like worn out children, freckled and content.
