ill never understand why people rebut "its fucked up that cavetown was forced out of the closet" with "if you didn't know he was a trans man you weren't paying attention to his music" like, him making art about his identity doesnt give you, the listener, any right to make it public for him?? his coming out to his community should have been on his own terms, he was clearly uncomfortable with being viewed as a "trans artist" and most of his early community respected that. and dont even get me started on "he shouldnt have used the t-slur if he wasnt ready to come out" that tumblr post was years old, as in way before he had a massive following, possibly before he had any following at all! how would you feel if someone dug through your old blog and make out come out with sensitive information to hundreds of thousands of people, some of whom already hate you, to prove youre not transphobic?? how would you feel??
the cavetown discourse frustrates me because its so shallow, like, its obvious from his apology that he grew from the place where he made those tweets and is more than willing to make a change, and its totally okay not to forgive him, I dont fully forgive him, i havent been able to listen to his music or watch his old youtube videos without feeling uneasy for weeks but people are far more concerned with branding him as an bigot and as "problematic" than they are concerned with being hurt by his words and actions
