call: valeria → ryan
Ryan: [Ryan knits his brow together, it wasn't anywhere he'd heard of. Part of him felt like he was walking into some kind of a trap, but his curiosity was winning out.] Never heard of it, but...yeah okay. Not off the top of my head but I'm sure I can figure it out.
Valeria: [Valeria traces the outline of a novel's over with the tips of her fingers. She has no hesitation at any sign of his, sure he will show up.] Any driver allowed to charge for their services will know where it is. Well, excellent. I'll see you Tuesday. And do try to be punctual, Ryan.
The scratches on my back from after the Ball have finally healed. You know what they say — out with the old, in with the new.
Yeah well, the scene got played out and Theo running a campaign has me trying to support my brother.
How sweet of you, becoming what’s needed for the ones you care about. Just like you did for Claudia, right?
Whatever could go wrong...
call: valeria → ryan
Ryan: [He was still suspicious of the call's intentions, but at the same time he didn't want to miss an opportunity.] Yeah, that would be -- Sure, why not?
Valeria: [Snaps a book shut, stands up. Definitively:] Wonderful. I have a reservation at Masa for 12:30 this Tuesday. It's a lovely little place, tiny; you'll love it. It's in the Time Warner Center, do you know how to get there?
"I think you’re overestimating how fashion savvy the members of your family are, it’s not like I could count on the men to learn the ropes. Rent my soul to you? Now, what good would it be to own the soul of a humble politician, Valeria?"
“Lorenzo, at least, knows plenty -- we’re an extension of each other, after all. Though I wouldn’t recommend Lucas or Diego for advice, though I love them. You talk about yourself like you’re nothing beyond the tie, John. I recognize the man and the power of the individual behind it.”
“-- Not to say you don’t look exceptionally handsome in the tie.”

Games People Play | Valenzo [Private]
They’re dull, tasteless, banal, and have an unmatched skill for throwing what could been considered one of the most forgettable parties one could ever attend. This was nothing like what he was used to attending in Madrid. He knew that he wasn’t the only one in the room that thought so. There were the other Delgado family members that would agree with him, yet they were all pretending like it was the event the entire city would be talking about for ages. The Governor’s Ball. Lorenzo couldn’t decide whether he’d rather laugh in Theodore and his father’s face for thinking they were the epitome of elegance and capable of hosting decent events or simply feel sorry for the family. “At least one of you isn’t on this level,” he murmured to himself about Cordelia while the scotch barely even burned his throat. It was a step up from the champagne which most seemed to be enjoying although they’d be better off drinking tap water. All that was missing was a drunken celebrity like the Cyrus girl to swing into the room half-naked from a chandelier.
It wouldn’t be long before someone made the night more exciting though and if it took a Delgado to do it then so be it. Someone had to put all of these people out of their misery which was only being made more torturous by having to listen Theodore playing the piano. The Aristocat’s were better pianists. There was a lot of refinement that the night needed but he refused to think about it any more and began his search for the tall blonde he was sure would lighten his mood one way or another and they needed to discuss a few things regarding the only Calloway that he didn’t think was completely incompetent. It seemed as if the more time he spent around them either willingly or unwillingly, they reached another level of irritating. He had come to realize that every time he’d crossed paths with Olivia and even with Clarissa. Clarissa was a completely different story though; what she lacked in sanity she over compensated in being completely psychotic. Unlike Clarissa though, Olivia lacked many things that made it possible to want to be in the same room for too long. Lorenzo could break every single one of them down and list off all of the reasons why they were pleasant people. The Delgado’s weren’t saints though and far from perfect, but they were more than capable of using everything they had as weapons to take down anyone that stood in their way. In a way, that was exactly what they were known for.
As the minuted trickled by he became more impatient in his search for his cousin. The last he had seen her, she’d disappeared into a crowd with Cordelia for some drinks and bonding time. Cordelia had arrived somewhat nervous as well and even though Lorenzo had a grip on her and could help her handle her emotions, Valeria was still slightly better suited. They were “best friends” after all. Luckily, it wasn’t long before Lorenzo spotted his cousin Valeria. “Prima,” he said placing a hand on her back to get her attention. “How are things going for you tonight? Disfrutando este circo?”
Another party painted in the shadow of the ones thrown in the midnight shade of Madrid (or the dimmed-lights refuge of a Delgado penthouse in the Upper East Side). It lacked colour, purpose, that je ne sais quoi, as if God had reached down and pulled a drain plug in the middle of the room, into which everything sank. It was a pastiche of itself, Valeria thought briefly, the specter of a smile graphing her lips and reshaping them behind the rim of her glass -- which was promptly put down after a small sip from its contents. The champagne had grown warm and lost its fizzle, and her slightly-puckered displayed her obvious distaste. Valeria held out the remnants to a passing waiter, who stood still momentarily, as if waiting for an explanation.
"It tastes like cheap cider." She offered in a tongue crisper than her alcohol, and the staff bowed his blushing head in response, walking towards the kitchen.
Valeria had already spent her obligatory time with Cordelia, which had been comprised of equal parts smooth verbal liquor to soothe her nerves, and slightly-heated gossip passed between their lips like ichor. (Nothing bonded women like shared dislike). She did not have a regular, salaried job, but the work of sluicing open the skin of the vulnerable and implanting herself in their marrow was profitable both monetarily and in measures the general populace did not understand. The only other soul that understood the weight system Valeria used to justify her activities had been enveloped by the crowd and the formality of the party, surely caught up talking to someone he did not care about and certainly did not like. As a collective, they disliked most people (nothing bonds cousins like mutual malice).
Some fortune -- and certainly not by the will of God, for He had long ago given up on the Delgados -- allowed the next hand on her back to belong to not a swarthy business tycoon, but Lorenzo. "Gracias a dios," Valeria muttered under her breath, thanking God anyway, while she looped her hand under Lorenzo's arm and rested her hand above his elbow and turning them to take a walk of the room. Her eyes rolled slightly at the question. "Circus -- a good word for this mierda. The only way I would enjoy this is if the ringmaster got mauled by a tiger. However," She affected an elegant turn of her neck, looking to the corner of the room. "I see no cage for us to unlock. Thank-you for taking Cordelia for the first half," She spoke in soft tone too low for anyone else to hear, appreciation and annoyance intermixed in her pitch. "She found some old-acquaintance to talk to, a childhood friend. I didn't recognize him, so I didn't see the harm." Valeria sighed. "I would hope you've had a better time, but I think that's impossible here."
call: valeria → ryan
Ryan: [Startled, Ryan takes a moment to gather his thoughts.] No thats..fine, just unexpected. Can I help you with something?
Valeria: [Her voice is still smooth, without pause, verging on congenial but still somewhat formal:] I should hope so. We haven't properly met, and I thought it might be nice - for both of us - to get together and have lunch.
Targets?
Look I got a lot to do. We can do this cross examination some other time.
You're right, perhaps that's too aggressive a term. You're not a real hunter, are you?
Do you really? Because it seems to me your days have grown rather dull as of late. No mention in the papers of wild parties, drunken escapades, women... That's very unusual for you, Beckett.
"I suppose I should learn the basics so I don’t wind up as worst dressed politician on some list. And no one knows more about fashion than you, Valeria or maybe Clarissa but I’m not looking to sell my soul to Satan just yet. "
"No one in my family will allow that to happen, John. Well, a flower is only as attractive as its petals, don't you think? Please, I'd have you twice as well-dressed and you'll only have to rent your soul to me -- and I'm sure you can see my halo up there somewhere."
“Delusions are often formed over coveted things.”
"She better, otherwise everyone will think they can do it. I chose white. The warmer weather will not be far away and it looked great against my skin tone."
"-- In the least, that explains the phenomenon of Stepford Wives."
"I'm not worried. The staff know better. That was my preference; once the sun becomes a more permanent fixture outside, the white will pop. How did the remainder of the Governor's Ball go for you, Diana? I didn't see you past our brief chat when I arrived."
It’s a little tight on the boobs, but since when has that stopped me from wearing something? Not fair to hold your cup size against you the way guys do.
In my experience, they're more interested in having us hold it against them.
Though you're not wrong. If we were dressing for men, we'd be naked.
"have you heard about the girl with the box? the one cast out with eve and helen for bringing about ruination with a simple action (eating an apple, existing)? let me tell you a truth about man: he is afraid of but two things, and they are what he cannot control — absolute beauty, and spectacular death; both of which are under a woman’s command. they are afraid, and so they seek to keep us soft and compliant, ignorant of who we are molded after and what we are capable of by telling us to keep our mouths shut and our legs open. but i have not forgotten my foremothers. i have not forgotten the women who ransacked cities and defied gods. i will remind them who unleashed all the evils upon the world: a girl. a single girl. only, this time, i am not going to peek inside. i am going to smash the box wide fucking open.”

Ryan: [Clearing his throat apprehensively, Ryan shifts from right foot to left.] Uh, yeah. That's me. Whose asking?
Valeria: [Matter-of-fact:] Your cousin, Valeria. I hope you won't mind, I got your number off a mutual friend.
call: valeria → ryan
Ryan: [Answers after a few delayed rings, a quizzical look at a number he doesn't recognize. His greeting is curious and partially hesitant.] ...Hello?
Valeria: [She stops looking at her nails, attention focusing. In a smooth voice:] Hello - is this Ryan?
