As the pandemic keeps visitors away from Nara Park, the herds of deer that inhabit the grounds are gradually reverting to their natural foraging instincts. Deprived of “deer crackers” doled out by tourists, animals are spending more time grazing and then resting to chew their cud. The deer are also less  stressed, something experts say is beneficial to the long-term health of the population.
