“...”
“But why, though?”
“Young Lord Cao Rui,” he greeted firmly with a firm crush of his fist into the opposing palm, “allow me to be one of the first to greet you; your return has been long awaited.”
@vainward-tsun
“Th... th... h...” Oh no, it was happening. Rui was incapable of forming full words in the presence of Zhang Liao. Why, oh why, did this happen so often? Every time Rui told himself he would be composed, his body betrayed him. “Thank you, General. It’s good to be back and not have to remain in hiding like a coward.”
jotouka:
“All this time and you’ve never worked on your humor….It’s nice to see you too again, Young Lord.”
“I’ve been more concerned about keeping myself safe rather than thinking up jokes. Nice seeing you again, Sidekick.”
“Oh, it’s true then? Teacher’s grandson is here in Xuchang again?”
“No I’m not.”
thewrathofheaven:
“It is simply how we see it.” He responded gently, shifting his grandson’s weight into the crook of one arm and gesturing up towards the night sky away from the moon. “When we leave this world and move onto the next, we will be up there with it–among the stars with our ancestors. Perhaps I will be able to tell you then.”
Rui looked out to the night sky and gazed at the bright moon as he listened to Cao Cao’s answer. Another question followed after Cao Cao mentioned the stars and their ancestors: “How come we can see the stars but not our an... an...” Rui was struggling to properly pronounce the word, but he had heard it a few times and knew what the word meant. “...sisters?”
“Even when the moon wanes, it never changes shape. Do not ever forget that.”
“But how come the moon looks like a boomerang sometimes, yeye?”
sunshao:
“You’ve been back for months, and you still couldn’t come up with a better nickname than that?! Tch! I thought the son of Cao Pi would be able to do better.”
“Aww, fussy kitty. Does kitty need some love?”
sunshao:
“If she breathes she’s a thot. But no I’m kidding. You’re right, all women are queens. When did his non royal bratiness get back in town?”
“I’ve actually been back for the past couple of months, but I’ve been making myself less present as to not draw too much attention and suffocate. I suppose it’s a breath of fresh air to see you too, Puss.”
“All women are queens.”

"Again with the pet names," Shao snorted, "Cut it out. Also, stop splashing your face with pool water. That can’t be good for you. Lookit that, your face is already red."
'Jeez, this guy's a dork,' Shao thought as he ran a hand through his wet hair, 'Doesn't talk shit as much as he usually does when he's got his safety net.'
Shao could have left at this point, but a spastic Rui was a funny one, and considering Shao skipped going out to dinner with Taohua and the others, he needed another source of entertainment. Rui was like a fish out of water on his own in college, and while it might have originally started out as pity, Shao and Taohua could call Rui their friend. Or in Shao’s case, friend with benefits.
College left little time for a committed relationship, at least for Shao. While he seemed lax about studying and classes, he actually applied himself to studying. There was no way he was going to bury himself in books his entire college life, and as such he’s put a couple of notches in his bedpost. Maybe after college he would consider something long term, but for now he’d enjoy playing the field. Though, if anyone asked him if he’d wind up in a grayish area of relationships with Rui, he would’ve laughed in their faces. But now…
“Taohua is out with her boyfriend. Group dinner turned into a date. She wasn’t going to cook, but dinner was going to be her treat since I treated the night before, and paid for gas today.”
"My face isn't red because of the water, you fool, it's because you--" Rui caught himself before he could complete his sentence. "Tch, never mind." At that moment, Rui really wished he had been trying to drown himself. His face became warmer and redder, along with the gushy feeling he was having in his stomach and chest... oh, how absolutely annoying. Why was he feeling like this?
Rui was aware of the answer: Shao was growing onto him, not just through physical attraction, but Rui was beginning to feel something deeper than that. He was in complete denial, and he was aware of his denial - but he believed that if he kept telling himself differently, the feelings he was having would go away. Speaking of things going away-- just when was Shao going to do that? He already did what he came to do; which was to check up on Rui, and Rui was fine. He didn't need to be with him any longer.
... or... should Shao stay where he was? Rui was having second thoughts.
'No.' he thought to himself. 'What the hell is the matter with you?' he asked himself, then shook it off and spoke again.
"I don't need you to babysit me anymore, Sh-- Puss. You can go back to the hotel. Just text Sidekick and tell her that I'm fine, and that I will eat on my own time."
i.
yeah.

"Oi. There you are," Shao began from the opposite end of the pool, "We wondered where you went after we got back from the beach. Taohua was concerned that you wouldn't wind up eating. I volunteered to make sure you turned out alright."
There was no sense in letting Taohua feel bad about going out and leaving someone she considered a friend behind, so Shao decided to make it easier by staying behind. He could easily drive out later and pick up something to eat, but even he didn't want to leave Rui behind. Maybe he was a sucker for lonely people; he spent most of his life surrounded by people who cared and seeing someone by themselves never sat well with him. Rui was no exception, their own personal involvements aside. As far as Shao knew, they were friends with benefits or casual partners, in addition to being just roommates in a dorm. It was nothing complex, but something simple and gratifying.
"You look like you’re trying to drown yourself," Shao continued, sitting at the edge of the pool and sticking his legs in until the water covered part of his shins, "sit up before you suck up water through your nose."
"Blargharghghh!!" Speak of the devil, look who was here. Rui was surprised and ended up choking on the pool water; he rose up and spit the water he gargled back into the pool. "Dammit, Puss--!!" So much for having some evening solitude, he of all people had to appear. That was the last thing he needed. "Tch... tell Sidekick that she doesn't need to concern herself with me. I am fine-- and no, I wasn't trying to drown myself, either." He supposed he appreciated the gesture, but whether Rui ate or not wasn't something to be too worried about. Rui ate at his own times; he didn't have a eating schedule to stick to, but he made sure to eat at least twice a day, with something light.
His face was still flustered red, he hoped Shao hadn't caught it. Rui moved his glasses from his face to his head and splashed the water onto his face; he kept doing so, as if he were trying to cleanse himself of the feelings he was having regarding Shao. He didn't need those; he didn't want them. Rui could feel that his face was still blushing red, so he kept his back turned against Shao and continued splashing his face.
"Where is Sidekick, anyway? Was she planning on cooking something for us? I doubt she would be able to - we're in a hotel, not our dorm rooms." He hoped that Shao wouldn't stay for too long, Rui wanted to go back to his peaceful tranquility, and back to his own thoughts; having Shao around him was going to compromise his thought process... and his feelings.

Rui didn't mind taking trips - especially if they were to the beach. His family enjoyed going to beaches, actually; but he only liked going to beaches when the heat wasn't over eighty degrees. As a result, Rui only stayed under an umbrella to protect himself from heat rays and receiving unwanted tans. He remained under the umbrella while he watched the rest of his peers break watermelons with wooden swords and swim in the water.
Which was why he waited until much later; the evening, to be exact, where he could reserve a pool for himself and cool off there. The evening heat was still there, but at the very least he was safe from the actual sun rays. Rui was relaxing in the pool, leaning himself against the edge and closing his eyes to take in the calming atmosphere.
"Mn..."
Randomly, his thoughts began to wander to earlier today, when he, Taohua and Shao were still at the beach. Taohua had been mostly hanging around her boyfriend and his best friend during the beach stay, while Shao was playing in the water. He recalled Shao trying to bring Rui into the water with him, but Rui would refuse, choosing to stay put with their things under the umbrella instead. It was his loss, Shao probably thought. He remembered Shao being in the water, on his own with no companion with him - it didn't look like Shao minded. He recalled Shao being content by simply being in water because the heat was destroying him during the drive to the beach. Rui also recalled the times that Shao would come back up to the surface with his soaking body and dripping long hair, and his bangs hanging loose in front of his face... and his toned arms, those impressive abs, and that sculpted chest--
What the hell was he thinking.
Rui snapped out of his unusual thoughts and became flustered, sinking himself up to his nose in the pool and growling bubbles out of confused frustration. It was no secret that he and Shao had been screwing for months, everyone knew about it-- and there were no strings attached. In that time, however, Rui never thought about him; like, really thought about him the way he was earlier. Shao wasn't a bad-looking guy, but Rui never thought too deep about it. Why was he thinking about it now? Their relationship was confusing, and no one could ever understand it-- Rui doesn't even understand why he finds pleasure in screwing with Shao, they couldn't even be called 'friends with benefits' - for one, Rui didn't even consider him a friend, just his annoying room mate. His annoying room mate with very nice physical features-- shit. He was thinking about him again.
"Stupid Puss."
