☾↣ hey guys !! sorry for the radio silence the past few days, i’ve been super super sick and not up to getting on or really out of bed oop but i’m working on feeling better so i won’t be gone too much longer! for now, all of my everythings on a little semi hiatus while i get to feeling better, but it should be lifted soon! thank you guys for being patient with me!

☾↣   anwyll gave the teacher a surprised look. proud? he had never expected her to say something like that to him. after all, he was just doing his job. day in, day out, the gatekeeper kept an eye on everything. sure, anwyll had devoted himself to keeping her and the students safe, but to get validation for it made a warm feeling swell in his chest.

       “i’m not sure i’ve done anything worthy of that, professor, but...i appreciate your kindness nonetheless! i’m honored to be doing this for you, for everyone! it’s the least i can do - you work so hard! i’m proud of you, professor, for all that you do at the academy! we all owe you our thanks!”

☾↣   as surprised as he was by the action, it was hard to take the tiny girl entirely seriously. she was awfully short to be pinning him to a wall, but even so he wouldn’t laugh, tell her to move, or ignore her question. he was far too polite for that.

       “i suppose sometimes a small rest would be nice, but i really don’t mind being on watch! it means i get to see everyone’s smiling face, and keep each one of those smiles safe. it’s worth it to me!” anwyll gave her a small, sincere smile. 

        “if i had someone to watch in my place, i suppose i could take a little break, but i would never want to trouble someone else with the burden of this job. i really don’t mind! even if i don’t get breaks often, it makes the ones i do get even more special.”

        “if you wouldn’t mind, i’d love to learn about fishing. it seems like such a useful past time, one that would be useful for relaxation and for survival. an important skill for us knights &&. soldiers indeed! of course, i know how busy you are, so really, whenever you have a free moment let me know! i’d be honored to be your student.”

☾↣   a furrowed brow cut across anwyll’s expression. he had done his very best to hide the fact he had been hurt. it wasn’t enough. he had placed bandages on his cheek to cover the wound, but the cut on his lip was nearly impossible for the gatekeeper to hide. still, perhaps he could fake being alright - he didn’t want ashe to worry. 

         the golden eyed man hoped to brush it all off like it was nothing, to make light of any injuries that were left visible. he lifted his hand up to his mouth, touching the cut upon his lip as softly as possible. anwyll winced at the twinge of pain && he dropped his gloved hand back away, a sigh escaping him. he gave the young boy stood across from him a half-smile (it was the only smile he could afford to give without causing himself any pain).

         “it’s just a scratch, i’m alright.” he started, it wasn’t entirely a lie. he was alright - or he would be, anyway. the gatekeeper had faced far worse than this before, he’d power through. “i...wouldn’t say beaten up, exactly, there was this bandit and...” anwyll averted his gaze, looking towards the ground in agonizing shame. he never was quite strong enough when they needed him.

        “she was a threat to the monastery. i had heard tales of her before, and...well...i wasn’t sure what to do...b-but i couldn’t let her get away with her nefarious plots! so i ran after her. i...wasn’t on duty, and i didn’t have time to grab armor, i was basically defenseless...” the realization of just how much danger he could have been in sunk in, a new layer of frustration at himself sinking in.

       “ i just wanted my friends safe.”  he confessed, embarrassed at how easily she had bested him, how foolish he had been. he looked back up at ashe, hoping he wouldn’t think any less of him. a somber, worried expression lingered on anwyll’s face for a moment before he spoke what was truly on his mind.

      “ please ashe, don’t tell the professor. i...i don’t want to let anyone else down.”

☾↣   “professor!” was all the tumbled out of the gatekeepers lips at the gentle kiss to his cheek. he watched as the professor walked on by, eyes softening and a pink hue taking to his cheeks. he reached his hand up to his cheek, a fond smile on anwyll’s face as byleth disappeared from his view.

☾↣   his eyes unusually heavy, adorned with deep bags under them. he appreciated dorothea’s words - more than he could tell her. it was the little moments like this that made his job worth it. to protect those at the monastery, at the academy. it was grueling work. as hard as standing watch over it all day in and day out was, it was nothing compared to when he got caught in storms and battles. it was hard on his soul. a particularly challenging battle had caught anwyll of guard only earlier that week, only now had he recovered enough to return to his post. he felt awful about it, he had failed in his duty to protect everyone, it was something he knew he wouldn’t live down for quite some time. even if the students didn’t hold it against him - he couldn’t forgive himself.

       “ thank you, miss dorothea. you’re far too kind, i messed up royally on the job. i deserve a scolding, not your comfort, but...” he paused, doing his best to give her a small smile. “...it’s appreciated nonetheless.” the gatekeeper had nearly exhausted himself trying to take on as many tasks as he could to make it up to the people at the monastery for his set back in battle. he was punishing himself far more than anyone else. he had been caught off guard, but only he suffered for his blunder. there was no need for him to continue working overtime to make up for it - yet he did.

      “ i’ve got to keep training, and working hard if i’m to truly protect you all. i won’t let a mistake like that happen again - i swear! you’re safe with me.”

☾↣   “well, miss, not exactly. as tiring as it may seem, it’s part of my job to be nice - to treat everyone at the monastery with kindness and make sure there’s plenty of smiles to go around. i’ve got to be at the top of my game, making sure everyone’s as happy as we can be in these hard times. but...even so...” he paused, looking down with a facial expression that could only be described as ashamed.

        “sometimes it does get tiring to stand here, and...it gets tiring having to fake a smile, some days. still, no matter the weather or conditions, i must press on for everyone at Garreg Mach!” he paused once more, tilting his head and looking at the other person.
