Verbatim this is what happened:

After a boss fight with Sylvanas, the cinematic when she is “defeated” is her flying next to the Jailer and Mind-Dominated Maw-Anduin, completely unscathed.

The Jailer yoinks the sigil-ball out of the Arbiter and the Arbiter fades from existence, and Sylvanas smiles at the Jailer’s victory as Thrall, Bolvar and Jaina just STAND STILL and watch.

The Jailer absorbs the sigil and transforms, to Sylvanas’ dismay. He is now a giant Lich King, with a new model and armor that is made specifically to look like the original Lich King. The Jailor opens a portal to Parts Unknown and makes Jaina Thrall and Bolvar kneel. Their eyes glow an mind-controlled lich/maw blue and they all are wrapped with chains and fall enthralled to the Jailer.

Sylvanas, suddenly, decides she doesn’t like seeing people lose their Free Will or something, that’s her character motivation now, ignoring the years or forced undead raising to mindlessly serve the Banshee Queen. She tells the Jailer they’re not needed because the way is open and the Jailer monologues about how he will shape a new reality and all will be made to serve him.

When he says “serve”, Sylvanas hears the word repeated in a voice clip of the Lich King, and Arthas, and is suddenly then and there standing before a Giant Lich King that she does Not Like The Lich King, frowns defiantly, and shoots and arrow at the Jailer.

The Jailer catches it, and Sylvanas says “I will never serve” - except for all the serving the Jailer she just did and has done, and all the talk she had of “serving death” and “serving her true master” before. The Jailer says “pity” and Maw-Anduin holds her at sword-point.

The Jailers reaches through a conjured Maw-portal and plucks out a blue gem. He says “you helped me get back something I lost so I’ll do the same for you”, breaks the gem and fires its essence into Sylvanas. The shock of it seems to make it appear that there are “two” Sylvanas, one pulsing and fusing with the current one (the “split soul” revelation a leaked short story and future Christie Golden novel that’s hinted to cover more).

The Jailer lets Thrall Bolvar and Jaina go and says he’ll leave Sylvanas to their “mercy”, and takes Mw-Anduin through the portal. Anduin drops his father’s compass-locket on his way. Sylvanas is approached by Thrall Bolvar and Jaina, she is nearly collapsed.

She turns to them with blue High Elf eyes now and begs them to stop the Jailer, but before she can tell them where he’s going she collapses and her redemption arc has begun.

“That’s hilarious Maddie,” you say.

“I know,” I reply.

“So what actually happened in the cinematic?” you ask.

I don’t reply this time. I just smile.

there is one correction i’ll make to this - the “split soul” thing was actually set up at the beginning of legion with uther’s backstory, which does establish that being killed by frostmourne splits a soul.

is it a cheap way to get sylvanas out of accepting responsibility for her actions? probably, yeah! but it IS something that was set up and now paid off. you know, like a big boy narrative!!

This was in…Legion? The first time I can recall the split soul thing being shown is the Uther cinematic you took an image if at the beginning of Shadowlands, two expansions after Legion. In fact a lot of people originally assumed this happened to him because the Light tried to “save his soul” after asking for it. The previous BFA cinematic with Sylvanas did not show her soul split when she was stabbed with Frostmourne and my friend who played the entire Death Knight campaign in Legion said there was no mention of this either unless they REALLY missed something.

This was only “set up” last minute in this expansion. In fact the Frostmourne’s abilities and it and the Helm of Domination’s creation were retconned/re-written for this expansion.

I think my favorite thing about the Reylo kiss is how blatantly obvious it is that Rey has no idea what she’s doing and she doesn’t give a FUCK.

She hesitates for a second, isn’t sure what to do with her hands or how to kiss a boy but goddamn it, she’s alive and Ben Solo is here, with her, and she loves him so much that she just can’t wait one more second to kiss him when she’s wanted him so much for so long and she just LAUNCHES herself at him and figures it out as she goes.

And then there’s Ben, his body broken, his life force all but gone, but Rey is alive and in his arms and he would never try to kiss her first because finally, at last, this is for her, everything is for her with no expectations. But then she kisses HIM and he can’t help it, he meets her halfway with one hand clutching the back of her neck, one arm going around her, and he nuzzles and deepens because this may be all they have but it’s THEIRS, and for this one perfect moment, they can just hold each other and know that they’ve loved each other all along, know that no matter what happens afterwards, they’ll never really be apart anymore.

That’s what it was all about. That’s what saved the galaxy.

Koltira Deathweaver was the Scourge's stitchmaster. He was the elegant tailor with experience stitching flesh from being a Farstrider (giving stiches) and enough care in his work to do it well. He loathed the outcome of the work. He hated having to create monsters just like those that killed his brother.
