if video game company execs had brains capable of thinking more than one financial quarter into the future they would be pushing to onboard the 50-65 age market so they could have a solid base of retirees with low mobility and lots of disposable income in 10+ years but because they're short-term shit-for-smarts they're gonna have to wait like half a century to really rake in that sweet sweet old person money and most of that generation won't even be able to afford a 70$ AAA price tag. idiots. fuckin fools.
I currently work with elderly folks and do you know how fucking bored they are? I walk into people's rooms and 80% of them are just watching tv all day. Or sitting in the dark. They are so fucking bored and if someone had taught them to play x-box before their ability to retain new information started to degrade they would have more options than fail to do the crossword and then wait 3 hours for the next mealtime but SOMEONE was busy trying to legalize gambling to children so now Joan is just wathcing Fox News all day. She could have been playing Animal Crossing. fuckin hell
This is, uh... this is literally why the Nintendo Wii took off as strongly as it did internationally, btw. Like, this is a genuine thing. It's a thing video game companies have even taken advantage of in the past.
I know a decent chunk of you are too young to remember this, but because Wii controllers were SO adaptive and SO new user friendly, the Wii was literally marketted at a "grandma joins the fun" whole family console for like. A really long time.
One of the biggest buyers of Wii consoles and adaptive accessories were retirement homes.
But now the Wii doesn't work properly anymore because the online support is all gone and new controllers are worth their weight in gold etc etc.
This is a GAPING hole in the market that LITERALLY IS A KNOWN QUANTITY. Retirees made the Wii. It was a fucking JOKE until people realized that toddlers and the elderly could both use it too.
But for some reason (short sighted infinite growth driven profit seeking), game companies remain convinced that retirees are allergic to their product even now.
Like. They're so convinced that Xbox is LITERALLY TURNING OFF ADAPTIVE CONTROLLERS FOR LOW MOBILITY USERS in like a fucking week.
Crackdown limits some cheat devices but also hurts fighting and accessibility hardware.
The stated goal? To force disabled users to buy their brand new, basically untested proprietary controller at an immense fee and hope that it just so happens to have the unique features needed for their specific disability.
Prioritizing accessibility in gaming invites more people to experience gaming, by empowering all gamers to play in the way that is true to t
Literally on Nov 12 2023, Xbox is ending all support for adaptive controllers from 3rd parties, eg, the people actually doing product research into the needs of the disabled, elderly, etc.
Like, we're past the point of merely forgetting this market exists.
We're at the point of violently rejecting the unwanted from video gaming entirely by making it physically fucking impossible.
We all know existential dread, but I propose (and please tell be if this is already a thing) existential awe.
Sometimes when I handsew or weave or something I get this immense feeling of connection to humanity. People for thousands of years all over the world have sat down and sewn a garment. Archeologists find needles and awls all the time. When I'm tablet weaving I have the same frustration at the arduous process of threading the tablets as the person 2600 years ago must have felt when they made the bands that were found in a celtic man's burial mount not far from my home. They probably also felt their back after a few hours of this.
* Hozier has gorgeous lush hair and a pleasing speaking voice.
* I have not been as disciplined in my job search as I should be. I’m honestly more enthusiastic about using this time off to organize my storage unit & visit out-of-town family.
* My grandmother’s increasing fragility terrifies me. I need her here forever.
* I’m super excited to begin using my Writual tarot journal and my Quirky Cup Collective reading journal. My digital journaling serves its purpose, but having separate journals for various interests fits my brain’s needs now. I wish I felt more comfortable keeping an analog primary journal around the house, but I don’t have any real privacy here. 😒
* I really fucking love my sisterlocks. I can’t wait for them to grow out a bit. Chin-length will be so cute!
* Insecure needy men are annoying.
* I’m not voting for either John Whitmire or Sheila Jackson Lee. Bite me. And the wording of the propositions goes against everything I stand for as a technical writer. CLARITY should be the goal when most of the populace reads at a 6th-grade level (if that).
* I gotta start going to a local blues/jazz/zydeco bar. I need to absorb the grown folk energy.
* I’m obsessed with Orly Breathable polish. Will be grabbing their new fall colors as soon as there’s a sale.
My grandmother talks about how growing up in Belfast, Ireland, British soldiers would raid the local Irish people's houses, steal from them, smash up their homes or burn them out, beat up or kill or imprison the men, rape the women, and then justify their actions by saying the local people were harbouring IRA terrorists and illegal weapons stores even though they weren't. Any time the British committed an act of violence against the Irish it was the same excuse.
And every time Israel blows up a school, hospital, refugee camp killing hundreds of civilians in the process and justifies it by saying they were harbouring Hamas it makes me think of that. Colonialism never changes.
[Jeronicus Jangle] was going to be going on a journey where he was going to lose everything and that his apprentice would steal all of his stuff. And he was going to go on a journey where his granddaughter would come into his life and make him begin to believe in life again, believe in magic again, and reconcile the family and come together. And that was really, I thought it was an amazing theme to be able to work from and a great character to play. And he said he was going to be a musical and I was going to be singing. And that was exciting to me. That felt like a real stretch. And it was going to be a challenge too. And so I signed on and I knew he was trying to make something that was multicultural. That was going to be my family. It was going to be a Black family, but it was going to be a universal theme that everyone could feel in love. – Forest Whitaker
