cheeks flushed as her long-time friend embraced her, smile widening now as she realized that he, too, was pleased to see her at last. she returned the enthusiastic greeting with a hug, and clasped an arm to his shoulder, giving a small squeeze.  it had been a number of years now– a number of years too long. there was, of course, the WAR to thank for that. and while some members of her court might not be fond of such a friendly greeting between two “enemies” ( in no world, of course, was valentin her personal enemy ), her joy at seeing him once more caused her to temporarily forget such a restriction. “too long, certainly, i would say. you look different, but then all the same, too.” alexandra drank in his appearance, bright blue eyes flickering over his features. “time is a funny thing.”

“i’ve been well. the journey was long, but i’ve recovered after a few good nights of sleep. and it’s good to travel again. to see others from outside the courts again.” this comment was, of course, directed at her present company, meeting his gaze at those words with warmth in her eyes. “and you? how have you been?”

much had changed; that was clear. thankfully, there were no changes so d r a s t i c as to leave either of them unrecognisable to one another, though he doubted that would even be possible with how close they had always been. his smile widened, hand lingering idly upon her back for a few moments as their embrace came to an end. truthfully, valentin had thought that a rift may have formed between the pair of them, just as one had been driven between their respective countries -- it was a huge relief to know this was not the case, though he had never been certain it would be. “you are taller, that much i can see.” he lifted a hand, brushing untameable blond curls from his face. “isn’t it just? it wasn’t as if we didn’t expect it, though.”

a gleeful laugh emitted from his lips, eyebrows rising and arms crossing over his chest as he listened to alexandra’s recount of her journey. “it most certainly is. don’t get me wrong -- i do love france, with all my heart... but being around the same people all of the time was beginning to get a little old. if only the situation was different.” his eyes crinkled at the corner, smile widening. “it’s v e r y nice to see others again. i’ve been well enough, thank you! busy still trying to wrap my head around the jobs of a nobleman. i’m not as natural as my brother in the role. but nonetheless i do enjoy it.”

late afternoon sun filtered through the windows of the great hall. although it was not particularly time for a meal, a rumbling in her stomach had brought alexandra to the expansive space. as she walked in search of some fruit and simple morsels to eat, sunlight caught the gold accents of her blue gown, fashioned out of light material for the warm june weather. there were many unfamiliar faces about that spoke with each other warmly; among them, suddenly, appeared on familiar one. the german princess approached with a quiet smile, picking up a bright red apple as she made her way over to him– valentin.

truthfully, he felt a little out of place among the many people congregating in the bern castle and valentin ( though he would not admit it out loud ) did his best to make it certain that he would not have to talk to anyone -- not yet, at least. still, he could not hide away in his room for the length of all negotiations and so he had managed to convince himself to venture into the great hall. a passing staff member had assured him that there was food in the hall too, and that was enough to put a spin on his confidence and an extra spring in his step. he was stood to one side, he was peeling an orange when he glanced up, blue eyes catching an all too familiar frame and widening in both surprise and glee. 

his lips tugged into a brilliant smile, the half-peeled orange placed aside in favour of his grabbing alexandra ( gently ) by the shoulders to kiss both of her cheeks in greeting. “it most certainly has been! too long, one might say.” slowly, his arms dropped to his side, the grin remaining. “how have you been?”

hi everyone, i’m zed !! ( i was here previously )  but i’m back with a new child, so you can read about him below, and we should plot ^_^  ;; 

( aaron tveit, 29, he/him ) silence! can you not see his grace, valentin de rouvroy,  has arrived? it seems the marquis de nointel is here to support their monarch. they are called the bibliophile around the court. have you tried approaching them? i heard they can be rather stubborn + diffident, but their staff say they’re allocentric + tender.  

valentin is a middle child; he has an older brother, and a younger sister, both of whom he is very close to -- or at least he tries to be. he is the marquis de nointel, a title bestowed upon him by his father ( the duc d’épernon - the title his older brother will one day inherit ) and thus a member of the french nobility ( otherwise known as the second estate. )

he was born with mild to moderate hearing loss and though it was a hereditary cause, it has widely been blamed on a traumatic birth. this means he has most trouble in noise environments and with reduced clarity.

quite content w being the middle child, even if most seemed to think it meant he was ignored. he received as much attention as his siblings ( if not more from his mother; he is to this day her favourite. ) though he was assigned a tutor that acted a li’l bit more like a carer to watch over him, which was entirely unnecessary. except for that one time he got stuck up a tree.

 a v happy + sweet child !! ( and for the most part, a pretty happy nd sweet adult. ) big into running about and playfighting; though it was discouraged because his parents thought he might,, make himself ‘worse’ or smthn ridiculous. was a huge adventurer. he had all of the lands his parents owned to explore in the north of france, and he loved it. 

was, and still is, really into horsemanship and is a top notch rider + trainer, even if it does get borderline reckless. ( he has no few boundaries when it comes to danger. ) he has calmed down since childhood, and has taken a little more to books over physical activities, but he still harbours a love for the outdoors.

was not involved in the war, due to his being hard of hearing,, and 14 when it broke out. that said, after he turned 18 he did aid the french effort tactically / strategically behind the scenes. 

valentin is a lot more reserved and shy around people he doesn’t know - or doesn’t know well - but it rarely takes him too long to warm up to people, he’s just too friendly + sociable for anything otherwise. 

basically been sent to bern because his parents think it best if he starts mingling w people outside of his own family, and the french court. also, they’re secretly hoping he’ll leave with a betrothed.
