“–Cécile…” Nora had suddenly piped up from where the two were currently lounging in one of the palaces many parlours. “…How do you bear it?” She sat up, expression no-longer bright from the laughter the two had shared a moment before, instead turning to one of rare dejection as she finally succumbed to the troubling thoughts which had lingered on her mind. She always aimed to keep composed around Cécile, to not let her own concerns trouble her cousin so, not when Cécile had burdens of her own, burdens of a Queen to worry about. But whether it was being back in Switzerland, at this castle, or something else – Nora had been feeling less and less in control, and it was a feeling she despised. “Not one of these dignitaries I’ve spoken with have seemed interested…in the good of others, in addressing the wrongs which have brought us here; instead, their interests seem to lie in just more power, solely power.”
Nora was still reeling from her argument with the Ottoman Empire’s Sultan the prior evening, when he’d all but hinted at cutting her tongue off…not that she was afraid of him, but once again, she’d been confronted by a man belittling her opinions; no less, in what had been her home, putting her in her place like she was naught but a senseless child - in fact he’d even deigned to call her such. She shook her head, managing a small smile, though her cheeks flushed in anger at the memory, and hot tears clouded her vision, tears she refused to let fall, blinking them away quickly. “–I feel as if I’m stepping on toes in every direction…and perhaps you’d have been best to leave me back in Wales. But I cannot seem to help it! How can I ignore it?”
Cécile had turned her head at the sound of her name. She stayed leaned against the chaise that she had taken up for the afternoon, working on embroidering the fabric for what would be a silk bag eventually. Hearing the question over, she set her embroidery hoop down and sat up with a soft expression moving across her face. “It is not easy. I have spent so many years desperately learning how to love so I could love the people of Switzerland after never knowing. I realized after our journey to Wales, that it is my job as a Queen. I do not know if it is just who I am as a person or if I came by it naturally but I know too many do not think about the people but only themselves.” Sighing she stood up. “Heavy lies the head that wears the crown, Nora. As much as I wish I could just scream sense into so many of these dignitaries who feel as if their power is more important, I do not know their country. I do not know if their people are suffering, so I can not judge. If their power out weighs their people than I must judge but I can not if I do not know.”
She had not noticed she had been pacing the room until she found herself in front of a window. Looking back at her she shook, her head and instantly rushed over to take her cousins hands. “No you are not, we are all in this mess of chaos. I understand how you feel, it is like you are constantly being over powered, undermined. Nora, my sweet cousin, please remember, these are intruders on your home. You are of Swiss royal blood, you are of the Von Erlach dynasty, anyone with issue is stepping on your toes, king or queen or dignitary. Disrespecting you, is disrespecting their host, no matter if we now live in Wales, we will forever be of Swiss royal blood and should demand respect. Your mother is a Swiss Princess do not let anyone let you feel as if you are a bother in your home. If they do, they can speak to me and be reminded of their place as a guest no matter the status.”
