My father had just died, and we were left to fight for ourselves. My mother crossed the border by night, and soon after, I crossed too. We settled in San Jose after she found housing and a job for us to survive on. I still remember the late night office cleaning jobs she had, sometimes fighting off raccoons in the dumpsters together. We started to embrace the American life slowly. We even had healthy rivalries to see who would learn English first. Throughout the next 26 years, we embraced this nation as our own and have known no other home. We eventually became citizens and I didn't have to be shy about telling people where I was from, for fear of status questions. Millions have similar stories like ours but many have yet to feel that sense of security. For those that have yet to have their dreams of a better future become a reality, I fight for you. I'm using my voice, my vote, my privilege to fight for immigration reform. You best believe.
