Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen - a.k.a. “The Red Baron” - was a Prussian aristocrat and fighter pilot in the Luftstreitkräfte (Imperial German Army Air Service). He had 80 air combat victories and is so considered the ace of aces in World War One. He was born in Breslau in the German Empire (now Wrocław, Poland) on 2 May 1892 as the second child (of four) of Major Albrecht Philipp Karl Julius Freiherr von Richthofen and Kunigunde von Schickfuss und Neudorff. As a child he excelled in school and enjoyed riding horses and hunting with his two younger brothers in Schwiednitz (now Świdnica, Poland) where he and his family moved to when he was 4. At 11 he began military training. He was originally in the Uhlan but was transferred in 1915 to the Luftstreitkräfte and was one of the original members of Jasta 2.
He was shot down and kiled at the age of 25 on 21 April 1918 near Vaux-sur-Somme, France. Richthofen has been buried in various places over the years but now rests in the family grave at Südfriedhof in Wiesbaden.
When I first saw a picture of Richthofen when I was 15 I immediately fell for him - I mean just look at him!
In my opinion he is the definition of aesthetic perfection. One of my all-time favourite quotes is one of his - “The murder of a man is still murder, even in wartime.”
The relationship between him and his dog, Moritz, is one of the most adorable things ever. Richthofen describes Moritz as “The most beautiful being in all creation is the genuine Danish hound, my little lap-dog, my Moritz.” After Richthofen’s untimely death Mortiz was adopted by Lieutenant Alfred Gerstenberg who took care of the Red Baron’s hound until Mortiz passed away from old age many years later.

The Beauty of letterpress poster
This looks fun. The lettering is made up from letterpress tools and the composition has a Russian Constructivist style. It was designed by Earl Gee for Neenah paper as part of their The Beauty of Letterpress: The Art of Making an Impression series.
“My other concepts involved straight type, but the idea of using tools as typographic forms was just too much fun to resist. I hope viewers enjoy discovering the tools within the typography.”
Proceeds from the print support of the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, whose mission is to preserve the historic wood type blocks and revive the old-world craft of letterpress printing.
Hallstatt Bronze Spiral Bracelet, Central Europe, Austria/Hungary, Early 1st ML BC
Stunning - in fact one of the most beautiful of the variety seen - a spiral bracelet so well made that it is still flexible after nearly 3000 years of burial. With golden patina that indicates it either was a river find or was elevated in the tomb to avoid direct contact with the soil. 19 spirals in all and certainly once adorning the arm of royalty.

Today we remember musician Prince with his portrait from our National Portrait Gallery.
Artist Lynn Goldsmith photographed the pop icon holding his guitar, a number of which were custom-made for him in that style.
One Yellow-cloud electric guitar that Prince designed and used is also in our @amhistorymuseum. Made in 1989, it features Prince’s distinctive symbols on the top and the side of the fingerboard.
