This is why we need to reframe self esteem and beauty for women and girls.

When beauty and self esteem is based on approval from outside (male) sources, it is fragile, easily and often destroyed, and based on self-objectification, which is psychologically damaging to women and girls.

Self esteem and beauty need to be reframed as coming from within oneself and not based on self-objectification. The idea should be that I gain self esteem by improving who I am on the inside, by pursuing interests that mentally, emotionally, and psychologically benefit me and better the world around me.

If Tiffany had turned the corner to have another group of guys mock her appearance, the “positive” reinforcement she got from the first group of guys would be nullified.

Framing beauty and self esteem as something based in approval from outside sources is giving away your power to those around you, and they get to decide if you are worthy of feeling good about yourself.

We need to change this perspective for future generations of women and girls.

for those who don’t know rosemary kennedy, jfk’s sister, had some developmental problems as a child, no one rlly knows what but she took a little longer than usual to hit certain milestones when she was growing up. but by all accounts it seems like she mostly overcame those problems by the time she was a teen like you can see her diaries from those years and she seems to have the writing abilities of a totally developmentally average teenager. anyway, so her dyslexia/or whatever it was that caused her to have problems in her early life was a source of shame/embarrassment for her dad (joseph piss kennedy) who sent her away to boarding schools where she was isolated from other kids and basically kept in confinement despite being perfectly capable of being amongst her peers. as she got older, and in response to being hidden away, she ran away from her school a few times to enjoy the freedom being readily afforded to her siblings. when she was caught and punished she would have violent tantrums, this combined w the signs of depression that she began to exhibit as a result of being confined once again led to papa piss coming to the conclusion that his daughter (who he already viewed as being ~defective from birth) was a complete lost cause. And so, acting entirely out of fear that any unplanned pregnancy or like scandal to befall rosemary might affect JFK’s prospects at the presidency, he had her lobotomised against her will by two men who promised papa piss the procedure would cure his unruly thorn in the side daughter and make her docile and content. neither of the men knew what they were doing, and their self-described method of surgery was to jam a butter-knife like piece of surgical equipment into rosemary’s brain whilst getting her to sing ‘god bless america’, stopping when she became incoherent and could no longer sing. the lobotomy rendered rosemary unable to walk or speak, reduced her motor functions entirely and left her in need of constant care for the rest of her life. to cover up the fact that he completely destroyed his daughter’s life j piss head kennedy had her sent away to a live-in facility and never ever saw her again. her own mother waited 20 years, for the death of J Piss K to go and see her. rosemary died in 2005 aged 86.
