It was Kira's turn to be awake at ungodly times. Ungodly to her, atleast on a Saturday morning, face buried in the space between Yumeko's neck and the pillow. She had everything she needed to sleep:

The fluffy blanket she always pulled out at the end of the day (Kira swears there's something magical about it.)
Quiet
So why in the world couldn't Kira fall asleep? She was completely sure she wouldn't move a muscle until she had to, so Kira stayed snuggled against Yumeko, where she belonged. Kira really couldn't stay mad at this tiny problem. She was comfy and with her Yumeko. Her darling. Her little doll. Kira's pale pink lips curved into a soft smirk, smug that no one else got to hold Yumeko at night. That no one else could kiss her lips or see her mask taken off.
This lovely little train of thought seemed to lull Kira to sleep. She pulled Yumeko impossibly tighter to her body, as if scared she'd dissappear, and finally closed her eyes.

Kira Timurova. A beautiful woman. A woman who was currently falling to the ground before her wife. Yumeko watched Kira's body fall to the ground, her own body bound, and screamed. She watched Kira fall to the ground, her eyes, lifeless and holding none of the spark her wife possessed. Blood was pooling around her, Yumeko off to the side in their kitchen, leaned against the wall and bound, just to witness her wife's murder.
She couldn't take her eyes off the body before her. Off of the arms that held her. Off of the eyes that looked at Yumeko like she was everything. Off of the lips that whispered sweet nothings in her ear and ushered out prophecies of their future, unbeknownst to their untimely parting. Off of the hair Yumeko used to play with unconsciously and when Kira couldn't sleep. Off of the head that held the mind of the woman Yumeko loved most. Off of the hands that held rings of promise and gave them.
The attacker, dressed in all black and a matching black face covering, left. They took the murder weapon with them and ran out the open door that had been picked open. Yumeko was still tied, tears slipping down her face, trying to draw her wife back to the living in vain by calling her name over and over. She got flat on the floor and inched her way towards Kira. No. Kira. You can't die. You can't leave me. You promised.
Yumeko gently laid her head on Kira's chest and her breath caught in her throat. Now she wished for the attacker to come back and kill her. To lay her to rest and be with her wife forevermore. She didn't care if Kira's blood was soaking her clothes through. Yumeko would let it settle and stick to her bones if that's what it took to hear Kira's voice again. To have her arms wrap around Yumeko and tell her everything was okay and everything was going to be. To say 'I love you' just one more time.
Even a simple heartbeat or rise and fall of Kira's chest would do.
The police found her like that. Curled against her dead wife, on her blood, bound and head on Kira's chest. Not sleeping. Barely breathing. Dehydrated and starved. Sick in ways no one could cure.
Yumeko didn't answer to anything. Didn't respond. But she watched. Listened. Heard as she was recommended a mental hospital. Then she startedlaughing. Not like she was amused. No. Yumeko was broken. Deranged really. Seeing Kira's body fall broke something inside her. Yumeko grabbed a nearby scalpel and the man who ripped her away from her Kira.

Next thing she knew, Yumeko was transported in a police car with bars on the windows and blocking her from the policeman and woman who pulled her away from the mangled remains of the paramedic who took Yumeko away from Kira. These two, unfortunately, would be next. Yumeko was caked in blood. Her bangs stuck to her forehead and hair stuck to her face. She was giggling to herself and humming a song Kira used to sing when neither of them could sleep and held each other through the night instead.
She was escorted through check-ins and fingerprints and death glares and slipping herself into a jacket meant for someone crazy. Something practically inhuman. As soon as Yumeko found herself locked up behind a cell, she laughed while crying. They let her keep on her wedding ring. Good for them. Yumeko would rather kill everyone who tried to take it from her than take it off.
At some point, Yumeko stopped remembering why she was there, thinking she was going home to her wife soon. Some inmates pitied her. Others feared her. All stayed far away from the woman who laughed and smiled like a woman crazed and hummed songs in Russian.
Days within the prison passed through like seconds. Yumeko bided her time, waiting to see Kira again. Sure, she'd have to wait a few years, but Yumeko would wait more just to see a glimpse her darling wife.
Yumeko was finally free. After two years, let off on good behavior. Idiots. She smiled as she rang for Kira's number, the one person Yumeko trusted to bring her home safe. It went to voice-mail. Strange. Kira never lets my calls go to voice-mail. Perhaps she's busy with work? No. My Kira would wait for me everyday if she had to, even if she wanted me here when we were so much younger. Yumeko did like hearing her wife's voice once more though.
So, Yumeko took a taxi in fresh clothes, her clothes that she wore when she got there, pressed clean like it wasn't drenched in two different people's blood some years ago.
I'm coming home my darling. Coming home. To you, Kira.
Yumeko was coming home to warm hugs, to smiles, to 'i love yous' and 'I missed yous', to kisses peppered along her knuckles, to holding hands and declarations of love through flowers and inbetweens of sentences, to finally holding and being held by someone again, to her Kira.
Once they reached Yumeko's home, she took out a 50 dollar bill and handed it to the woman who drove her. Yumeko stepped inside the house, seeing Kira's car there, and went on the prowl to find and surprise her wife.
"Kira, my love, I'm home!" Yumeko shouted excitedly, not seeing the blood on the kitchen floor yet. She was met with silence, instead of the wife who used to greet her at the door.She looked everywhere. Their bedroom, not there. Only pictures and a clean bed that looked like it wasn't used for a long time. Kira's office, not there. Both bathrooms, heck, even the guest bedroom. Not. There. Yumeko started to panic.
"Kira-san?" A nickname that had gone unused for years.
Yumeko wandered into the kitchen, seeing the blood dried on the floor and dropped to her knees. The realization hit her like a truck.
The door swung open after the power went out. A figure in black came in with a knife. Yumeko was curled against Kira on the couch one moment, then yanked away and tied up leaned against the kitchen wall the next. The figure had held Kira up by her collared shirt. No. Yumeko watched in horror as Kira looked at her one last time and murmured "моя любовь." Then the figure stabbed Kira once. Twice. A third time. Then dropped her.
"No..." Yumeko breathed. Tears spilled down her cheeks. "Kira..." She repeated the name. As if it'd bring her to life again. Yumeko grabbed her phone, watching old videos and looking through pictures she had of Kira.
She heard Kira's funeral was two years ago. Yumeko now visited her grave. She wanted to sink into the earth just to feel close to Kira once more. Yumeko wanted to hold Kira close again, and say the things she never got to even if it was only her bones that would feel it. That would remember the words murmured inbetween sleep and waking. She wanted to listen to everything Kira wanted to say, but didn't. Yumeko always came with white and red roses. A perfect stark contrast, always with a blue rose dead center. The same shade of Kira's lipstick when they were sophomores. Sometimes she'd bury letters in the soil.
Yumeko is now five years older, back in prison. Killed the two police officers who ripped her from Kira. Yumeko leaned her head back on the concrete wall of the cell and hummed the lullaby that hadn't been sung in it's native tongue in a long, long time. Today was supposed to be hers and Kira's anniversary. She looked at the ring Kira placed on her finger all those years ago.
She was done. Worn thin. Tired really. Yumeko had nothing left to live for. So, she grabbed the sharp knife she'd hidden carefully and slit her throat with a smile.
Now she'd be at peace. Now she'd be with Kira again. Kira. The woman she loved most.
Fanfiction is so silly. I am playing with my dolls and people are coming over to watch. Some of them even clap and give me compliments. And when I'm done playing, I can go and watch other people play with their dolls.

Student Council President Kira Timurova. A name that sent shivers down spines to all. All except one. Yumeko Jabami. Someone who smiled like sin and laughed in the face of shame. In the face of Kira. In the face of death. In the face of despair.
Little did anyone know, that Yumeko Jabami played not just to amuse herself, but to perform just for Kira. Their smiles towards each other sent incrypted messages. Their eyes told stories no one else could hear.
In fact, Yumeko made her way towards the Student Council office to see what Kira wanted now. Her smile bright, hands clasped behind her back. She hummed softly, a song that would play at her wedding, so many years later. But not to the only girl who made Yumeko feel less like a force and more like an actual girl.
"President Kira-san~ you called for me?" Yumeko asked, going over to Kira's throne. No one else was there. No Runa sitting in the corner with lollipops in her mouth and pulling tarot cards with a grim face. No Dori spinning knives on the table. No Chad making snarky remarks that everyone groaned at. No Suki posting another live and going over it with his 'mother.' Definitely no Sayaka in sight. And surprisingly, no Riri, who stayed by her older half sister like a shadow.
Kira's ice blue gaze softened as she looked at Yumeko. "I feel something is... amiss. The housepets are more moody than normal. More prone to lashing out. What do you think? Have you felt it too?" Kira had clasped one of Yumeko's hands between hers subconsciously. Because she knew her secret was her safety.
Yumeko did feel it. It felt like a weight pressing on her chest, making it harder and harder to breathe every time she woke up. "Yes, in fact. I have felt a strange presence. Do you remember what Runa said, about the Tower? Maybe we should listen to her."
"Maybe Runa is right..." Kira looked down, furrowing her brows in thought. Kira didn't think about other people's opinions before, but Yumeko changed that. Yumeko also didn't own any housepets, since she's not a pet person. Never has been.
Yumeko rubbed one of Kira's temples with her free hand. "Hey, listen. I'm sure it will be fine. I'm sure everything will. Relax for a second, darling, and we'll figure it out. Clear your head first." Yumeko knelt before Kira, still holding her hand.
"I think we'll host an emergency meeting tomorrow. No housepets, just Council members. Then we'll find out what's what."
Unbeknownst to the pair, shadows flickered behind them, within the walls. Housepets did indeed have their own secrets, it seemed. Information was passed on, through people in encrypted messages that made no sense to those not amongst pets.
Back in the chamber, Yumeko smiled softly at the girl she had always called home.
"Did you see the game today? The one with the two freshman?"
Kira smiled. "Yes. But it was a little predictable with the boy cheating so obviously and being so cocky. It was satisfying to see him brought down though."
Yumeko nodded. Still on her knees by Kira's left side. "Do you still have paperwork?"
"Unfortunately." The older girl deadpanned.
"Hmm. I'll stay with you then." Yumeko decided, resting her head on Kira's lap, still holding Kira's left hand so she could write with the other.
"Did you eat today?" Kira asked.
"Yes, but what I'm worried about is if you did. You're always in here, handling some matter or another, you barely make time for breakfast."
Kira bit her cobalt lip. She knew there was no use in lying. "No, I... hadn't eaten."
Yumeko nodded like this was expected. She pulled out a granola bar from her pocket and handed it over. "When dinner comes around, I'm dragging you to the cafeteria."
"You won't have to, I promise." Kira said with a smile, biting into the granola bar.
Except, Kira wasn't there for dinner. Nor was the whole Student Council wing. Or the rest of Student Council. Just Yumeko sat at the dinner table. Haunted. Pale. Not even the faintest smile on her lips as she sat by the President's chair, staring at it like she was willing for Kira to come back.
The police came soon after. So did the investigators. Housepets were ruled out. Yumeko as the sole member of the Student Council was accused and put in prison, bailed out through the funds she gained as a Council member and her family's money.
All through this messy process of 'The girl did it.' 'Jabami was trying to eliminate threats and gain more power.' 'No wonder she was so close with the president.'
Yumeko kept her mouth shut and pressed in a thin line. She couldn't tell them. Couldn't tell anyone. Not even after Kira's... she couldn't even think about it.
She bought bottles of liquor off of bootleggers, drinking in solitude accompanied by the faint ghosts of memories of Kira and the soft silver moonlight. Yumeko slept on the floor most nights. Maybe the couch if she felt good that day.
Yumeko should have been at Kira's side. But no. They striked when Yumeko had grabbed food for Kira. Yumeko was burned as she tried taking the bodies out, not knowing they were dead. She'd never seen Kira like that. Broken.
Bloodied.
Helpless.
Gone.
It broke something fundamental inside Yumeko. She smelled smoke everywhere now. It felt like she'd never gotten rid of the smell of smoke and burning bodies.
Yumeko drank some nights when the thoughts got too loud and she couldn't fight anymore.
Tears still came on whenever she had to cook with the stove. Even after 50 years she blames herself. But her granddaughter didn't.
Little Yumeko. Named after her. Original Yumeko wondered if new Yumeko would be the one to close the chapter on their family's name. Clear up history clogged by smoke and untold truths and hidden vipers dressed as housepets.
And this Yumeko, would find her wife peace. So she could come back to original Yumeko forever. Fulfill the promises Kira made to her so long ago.

Of course Mary Davis of all people had to go spirit boxing with three of the weirdest, creepiest nerds she'd ever met. She kept telling herself: 'It's for the ten grand.'
But honestly, Mary had been haunted before. Glimpses of a certain girl masked and broken in her peripheral, vanishing as soon as Mary glanced towards it. Waved it off. It's just my mind playing tricks on me. I'm just tired. It's sleep deprivation.
Little did she know, even God couldn't save her for what was coming.
Mary left the room after she finally finished unpacking. She could have asked her housepets, but Mary would be lying if she said she wasn't interested in her roommate. Mary wanted to see what Yumeko Kawamoto was all about.
Yumeko Kawamoto, number three on the leader board. A -pun DEFINITELY NOT intended- ghost. She lingered on the edges of the Gambling Hall, with her smiles that stretched too wide and manic energy.
Mary thought of her as a mystery. And mysteries like her were meant to be solved. So, Mary gambled her way up the ranks, for three reasons now.
One, finally solve Yumeko, and two, pay off debts. And one goal on the side: Obtain power.
Mary sighed like she carried the weight of something bigger than herself on her shoulders. The flickers came back. The same girl Mary called 'Mask' to be efficient.
Mask seemed to be walking beside her, ever so slightly behind. Mary didn't look. She had gotten used to seeing Mask, it was slightly comforting in a way.
She didn't question it, and wouldn't dare ask Yumeko. Mary nearly passed by the music room and smelled smoke. She furrowed her brows in confusion and walked in.
There was no smoke, and no fire, so Mary turned to leave when the door shut and locked.
"What the h**l?" Mary tried the doorknob in vain.
A few notes of a violin in the corner stilled her. There's no way.
Mary turned, and sure enough, there was Mask, broken, bloodied, pale, and ethereal. Playing 'Angel Lullaby' by Lex de Azevedo. On the violin.
Mask's hands were shaky, like she was nervous. But never once did she voice that. Mask was dead silent the whole time, staring at Mary like she hung the stars and made the moon shine.
As soon as the lullaby stopped however, the violin came down gently, and rested there, as if it had never been touched. And Mask, disappeared. The door opened for her.
Mary didn't leave immediately, rooted to the polished hardwood floor like the lullaby ensnared her. She still felt goosebumps and shivered at the cold.
What.
The.
F**k.
There goes 10 grand. If Mary sees Mask again during the spirit boxing, she's definitely losing the bet.
Mary went back to her shared room with Yumeko, too rattled to make a snarky remark at the picture resting on the plush armchair by the door, or how Yumeko was perched on the edge of her bed, touching a finger to her bottom lip like someone who'd been kissed for the first time.
Yumeko didn't look up from staring at the wall, and in fact, was smiling like she'd gotten a big piece of a puzzle back after years of searching.
"What happened to you?" Mary asked, half concerned, half teasing.
Yumeko looked up with a twinkle in her eye and the same manic smile. "I was visited, and so it seems you have too."

It was midnight. Mary kept glancing around her, and her eyes kept darting to Yumeko, because. What the f**k was she talking about?
They both pretended to be asleep until the near silent alarm for midnight went off. They got up, Mary leaning against the door, acting like she wasn't absolutely mortified by what happened earlier that day. She hadn't seen Mask all day after that instrumental performance she watched.
Yumeko on the other hand, hummed a song as she gathered her ghost hunting gear, stuff Mary had no idea was even allowed here. She looked at Mary.
"You look terrified."
"No, I'm not."
"Okay, I'm just teasing you."
A knock sounded at the door. Near silent. Still made Mary's soul leave her body. "Jesus!"
Yumeko giggled and opened the door to reveal not Mask, but Ryan and Michael.
Michael looked melancholic, Ryan looked nervous.
"Hey guys, are you ready to spirit box right under our dear President's nose?" Yumeko asked, a little too excited and hyper for midnight.
God himself probably couldn't save her now.
Michael nodded. He was a little too quiet. Ryan whispered, "Yeah, minus the under our President's nose part though."
Yumeko let out a quiet laugh and held up her cherry red retro themed radio like it was a holy relic. "Well, let's get going!"
Mary went beside Yumeko, who was practically skipping her way to the Student Council office.
Ryan and Michael followed behind slowly, silently, like detached shadows still clinging onto their casters.
They walked into the Student Council office silently. Yumeko placed the radio down on the center of the glass table. Sat down on the right of the throne the Student Council President where Yumeko always did, and waited. Mary sank into hers, and the boys followed suit, Michael looked paler than usual, but didn't give anything away.
Yumeko spoke first. "If this room is haunted, can you answer in any way, via the radio or anything in this room?"
No answer. An orb of light flickered into view and disappeared in the corner of the room, where the windows were. The radio turned on.
"We..."
"Were..."
"Burned..."
"Stabbed..."
"Silenced..."
"And..."
"So..."
"Will..."
"YOU..."
Cracks spread along the glass table, towards Michael for some reason. Why, out of everyone here, did Michael of all people have to?
Yumeko asked another question. "Why must he burn?"
Silence. Pictures rose, and slammed down on the cracked table, breaking the picture frames.
A picture of the Student Council, although this one was crossed out, stabbed, angry scribbles on their bodies, all except the original Yumeko.
The radio stayed silent. The room dropped colder. Mary shivered and wished she'd brought a heavier sweater. Something small inside Mary told her it was futile.
She felt the urge to get up, so she did. Mary stood by the chair.
Something touched her shoulder and there was Mask. Beside her. Although now she knew who Mask was.
This was Riri Timurova. The ghost who'd haunted her since her first day here.
Mary didn't scream. Couldn't. It felt like she didn't have a voice anymore.
Yumeko stared at the picture before her.
Stared at Michael.
Asked another question, softer. "Was the one who came to me earlier today Kira Timurova?"
Static. No words. In between static, it felt like there were whispers amongst ghosts.
"Don't..."
"Tell..."
"Say..."
"Nothing..."
"Liar..."
"Hear..."
Static turned back into static.
Mary didn't feel the weight of Riri's presence, but her chest felt lighter, and she had the confidence to ask a question of her own.
"Why are you still haunting this place?"
That set the ghosts off. Nice going, Mary. You p**sed off the ghosts of your predecessors.
"WE..."
"HAD..."
"SO..."
"MUCH..."
"TO..."
"LIVE..."
"FOR..."
More cracks appeared over the table. They spread from the radio, like the radio itself was haunted.
"SO..."
"MANY..."
"PLANS..."
"GONE..."
Yumeko was crying now. Silently. Mary didn't think the girl noticed she was.
Weeping was heard through the radio. Then real, ghost like wailing was heard from corners of the room. But, it was garbled, like their vocal cords didn't work right. It was haunting. Unsettling. Sad.
"loved..."
"we..."
"lost..."
"miss..."
"love..."
These weren't the big bad rulers of the school now. They were kids. Teenagers really. Scared. Lost. Missing loved ones. They didn't have closure. Weren't allowed it. Didn't even finish high school.
Mary's heart was touched to say the least.
"Do you know who killed you?"
Yumeko's voice was softer. Quieter. Cracked and frayed at the edges.
Static, then:
"No..."
"Longer..."
"Anymore..."
The radio went dark. The ghosts were done talking. Done dealing with their past. For now at least.
Mary rubbed her temples. She lost the bet, but now, Mary didn't care. Buried deep down inside her, Mary wanted to find these ghosts closure. To lay them to rest.
