THE GAMBIT CHAPTER: 1

P.S. I used headcanons in this, using @mari-thesapphic-lady's headcanons for Mary ♡ (changed the date to seventy five years back because it didn't make sense.)

Everyone knew to a T how bad the fire was in 1950 at St. Dominic's. Yumeko Kawamoto especially. She glanced up at her wall, where various newspaper clippings of pictures of the fire at this very school. It started in the Student Council room, where all of the council members were. It spread to that entire wing, but was thankfully stopped before it could spread any further.

The Student Council wing was renovated, but even after seventy five years, Yumeko could still smell smoke lingering in it. And others say more than the smoke lingers. And that was exactly why Yumeko had clawed her way up to Student Council to see if that theory was true.

She stared at the pictures of those who died in the fire, and her eyes lingered on one. Kira Timurova, the Student Council President at the time, who died alongside her sister, Riri Timurova and the rest of the Student Council. Somehow, Kira was important to Yumeko's actual family, the Jabami's. Her grandmother, who Yumeko was named after, was always by the girl's side in photographs.

Kira was an interesting girl, Yumeko had done extensive research to prove as such, as well as the rest, so maybe she'd be able to crack the case on why her grandmother was the one put in jail. Her roommate, Mary, rolled her eyes at Yumeko.

"You actually believe in that stuff?" She held a folded shirt, still unpacking. Mary had been unpacking all morning since it was a Saturday, she finally had time to unpack.

Yumeko turned around to look at her new roommate in disbelief. "You don't?"

"Ghosts aren't real. I mean, we can't see them, or hear them, so why would they be real?"

Yumeko smiled softly. "Weren't you raised Catholic?"

"Yes? What about it?"

"You can't hear or see God, so what makes Him real?"

"Faith, dumb**s."

"And I have faith that ghosts are real."

Yumeko turned back to her board, after seeing Mary slam a drawer open a little too hard. She grabbed her phone. "You just gave me an amazing idea, Mary."

"Which is?"

Yumeko started to text Michael and Ryan.

'Do you guys want to spirit box with me tonight? I'm bringing Mary' - Yumeko

'Yes, let's do it in the Student Council office.' - Michael

'y bring Mary tho? Isn't she a non believer?' - Ryan

'We're going to make her believe, with facts.' - Yumeko

'k' - Ryan

"I'm going to take you spirit boxing with us." She turned back to her skeptical friend.

"Whoa, hold up Yumeko. First of all who's 'us,' second of all, what makes you think I'll go with you?"

Yumeko laughed delightedly. "We're going to make it a bet. I'll wager you ten thousand dollars in chips that ghosts are real. If we don't see or hear anything tonight, that is. And Ryan and Michael will be there too. They don't know about the bet, I swear." She stuck out her right hand. "Bet?"

Mary looked at her friend's hand, mulling it over. "Fine. Bet." She shook Yumeko's hand.

Yumeko laughed again. "This is going to be thrilling."

Yumeko let go of Mary's hand. "I'll wake you up at midnight. Hopefully our dear President won't catch and flay us alive..." Another giggle. "But that makes it more fun!"

Yumeko grabbed her bag. "See you later Mary, I'm going to the library to see what Micheal has for me!"

After Yumeko shut the door, Mary muttered. "Crazy girl. This is about to be the easiest ten thousand dollars I've ever made."

Yumeko walked down the halls, carefully compiling all the information she knew so far.

The original Yumeko Jabami was on Student Council and by Kira's side in every official picture Yumeko had access to containing the Student Council of that year.

Original Yumeko wasn't there at the time of the fire. That made her the most likely suspect in the investigation, since she was the sole survivor of the Student Council.

The housepets weren't present either, but they were less likely suspects considering how frail they were.

All of the Student Council members had traces of blood on them, as well as stab wounds.

The burns came after the stab wounds, but they didn't die from them.

That meant someone threw their bodies in the room before setting the place ablaze.

Kira's sister Riri had the most, possibly because she tried to stop their killer from harming Kira. Riri also had a blunt hit to the head. They all had their vocal cords severed.

Their killer, their true killer was never found.

Yumeko neared the doors of the library when she felt a chill. Yumeko felt a hand caress her cheek and brush away a strand of hair for a brief moment, then it was gone. She could have sworn she smelled a whiff of smoke. The touch felt comforting, like something that had happened a million times before.

She walked in the library, which was as quiet as an abandoned cathedral. Yumeko walked towards the back, seeing the usual sight whenever she met Michael in here: books stacked up around the chair, several empty cups of coffee, and the boy himself, with eyebags that could have held actual gold in them. "Hey Michael, what have you got for me?"

Micheal and Ryan both stared at her. She hadn't seen Ryan due to the amount of stacked books around. Yumeko jumped slightly. "Hi Ryan."

"Hey. We found something. Looks like your guy really did know what he was talking about, Micheal."

"Yeah... so my guy helped us clear the camera footage before the fire, and this is what it uncovered."

A figure in a dark hoodie, dragged Kira by the legs, blood trailing across the floor. Several others followed suit, dragging the other council members with them. They all had housepet tags dangling from their necks.

"So it was housepets." Yumeko breathed softly.

"That shortens out search to about 70 students."

"Right. It sucks that they were alive after their vocal cords got severed though, then being dragged across the floor into a fire? I see why Obaachan always shed a tear when lighting the stove."

Ryan looked at her and patted her shoulder sympathetically.

"It's fine, we'll finally get to know who their killer was when we spirit box tonight."

Yumeko mentally wrote down the new information.

"Do you think they'll tell us?" Micheal asked. Always pessimistic.

"They'll tell us if they want their souls to finally rest. They'll tell us if they want their real killer to face justice." Yumeko smiled. She grabbed her bag and turned around to leave. "See you guys tonight." Then she left with a giggle.

Yumeko walked back towards her room, feeling it get colder and colder as she neared it. Yumeko wished she brought her ghost hunting gear. She went inside, the door slamming shut behind her.

Yumeko shivered, a mix of the sheer cold in her room and the thrill of being haunted being the cause. She glanced around her room. Nothing was out of place. She smiled and dropped her bag, sitting on the edge of the bed and watching. Waiting. Listening.

Yumeko watched the photo of her grandmother and Kira lift up and face away from her. She watched the photo drift lazily towards the chair and saw whatever was holding it look closer.

"You're... the spitting image... of her..." The voice. It was faint, eerie, and Yumeko could barely hear it. But that. That was definitely the voice of Kira Timurova.

Right-wing and far-right media have amplified a baseless claim that touch screen voting machines in Kentucky are flipping votes from former President Donald Trump to Vice President Kamala Harris, with similar claims emerging from Texas. Local election officials in each state have rebutted the claims, with one Kentucky official saying, “There is no scenario in which a voter would be forced to cast a ballot that they believe did not reflect their intentions.”

Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams debunked a widespread TikTok video that purports to show a voter in Laurel County, Kentucky, unable to select Trump on a touch screen voting machine. The video, which also showed the machine selecting Harris, has received 6.1 million views, with right-wing figures sharing it across other social media platforms as well. According to Adams, “There is no ‘vote-switching.’ The voter confirmed that her ballot was correctly printed as marked for the candidate of her choice. Kentucky election officials suggested that the video showed an isolated incident, with one Laurel County official stating, “Nobody complained before her, nobody complained after her.” Laurel County officials reported the issue to the attorney general’s office “just to cover all our bases,” and took their own video “showing that the machine is working and it is not flipping votes,” but were ultimately “unable to replicate the woman’s issue.” A spokesperson for the company that provides voting equipment for Laurel County confirmed that the touch screen devices print paper ballots that can be reviewed by voters prior to submission, adding, “There is no scenario in which a voter would be forced to cast a ballot that they believe did not reflect their intentions.” [The Dispatch, 10/31/24]

The Tarrant County, Texas, elections office stated that it has “no reason to believe that votes are being switched by the voting system,” after a right-wing X (formerly Twitter) influencer claimed that machines were switching votes. Right-wing commentator George Behizy claimed that “Voters in Tarrant County, Texas are reporting that the voting machines are flipping their votes from Trump to Kamala Harris.” Local officials confirmed, however, that the voter who believed his vote had been miscast “was issued a new ballot and able to vote." In the run-up to Election Day, right-wing and far-right media figures have been pushing baseless claims and conspiracy theories, seemingly attempting to undermine the election results. Several of these claims have involved voting machines, but experts say that voting machines are safe and difficult to hack or interfere with, and that errors are generally remedied by poll workers and local officials who have backup systems to ensure accurate votes are cast.
