- eventually he starts to admit he really appreciates the help, seeing as you caught on quickly with the little tasks he does every morning

charlie… is almost relieved to hear it, honestly would immediately flip a switch and do the very most to KEEP you as safe as you can be- but hide it in a playful manner. would carry you for the rest of your life if you asked, just because you inflated his ego.

The two of you are almost halfway in the enchanted forest, you walking in front of Charlie as you hold a little makeshift map in front of the two of you. The whole time Charlie is pointing out little shortcuts, you erasing and drawing paths over and over on the paper until a particularly strong gust of wind blow it away from the two of you, his shocked mouth open and yours would’ve opened if the pencil wasn’t still in your mouth. You didn’t want to say it, but you felt a little aggravated at him for losing your focus like that.

You stop to let him speed up in front of you, the two of you continuing onwards in silence before he speaks.

“Listen… I-“

“It’s fine, you go and I follow. I trust you.”

The minute those words left your mouth, Charlie immediately stops and turns to look at you, the clinks and clanks of his armor making it almost comedic.

“What?”

“…I said you could lead the way?-“

“No,” he shakes his head, the helmet shifting with him, “After that.”

You look at him quizzically, your arms awkward by your side as you look to the side then to him again.

What you couldn’t see was Charlie internally squealing like a little girl, happy that someone like you can allow themselves to be so carefree around him. Except you weren’t just someone; he’s unknowingly had a thing for you long enough to where it’s embarrassing that he hasn’t made a move. But, somehow, you telling him that made him understand why he got so nervous around you. Why he always felt let down whenever you had a different mission that day and couldn’t hang with him and Pim. Why he always slightly pulled aside the seat next to him in the office just so you’d sit next to him instead of across.

He finally realized he liked you.

But of course, he’d never say that out loud.

What he did do, however, was immediately grin and flex, his armor audibly showing him move as if he were showing off in a gym mirror.

“Well of course you do, I’d be concerned if you didn’t think a hero like me could protect you. I mean, look at me,” he plays along, successfully earning a chuckle from you before you roll your eyes and shift the bag on your shoulder before you keep moving ahead.

“Alright, hero- hey-!” Your joking manner was cut short as Charlie picks you up, flinging you over his shoulder as his laugh rockets off the trees around the two of you.

Your giggles and pleas to be let down drowned out as he thought about that sentence once more, thinking about what to do to hopefully hearing it again another time.

pim….. he’d be so happy, would internally have a little panicked spongebob brain moment but on the outside he’s a stuttering blushing mess. as if he isn’t pink enough.

“Don’t worry, i’ll use this rock to mark the trees- we can find our way back easy!”

Pims words seemed like an echo, his happy go easy personality twenty minutes ago almost feeling like a warning now that the two of you crossed that bridge. The two of you just barely escaped the rain, logs and sticks discarded as the rickety cabin door you called shelter slammed shut.

You were both dripping, Pims cowboy outfit making wet stretching noises every time he stretched his leg or raised his arm. Your outfit was also drenched, a small rip or two from the thorns you pulled away from on the run here.

You were still kneeled over catching your breath as the thunder pursued outside, Pim shakingly clearing his throat before looking up at you with disappointed eyes.

“Listen,… I’m really sorry, I didn’t think it would rain or anything but even then I shouldn’t have taken us across the bridge, and now it’s my fault we’re here-,” he begins, his wet hat now in his hands as he stares down at his cowboy spurs. He only really looked up once he hears you interrupted him with a laugh, a sound he immediately feels his cheeks redden to.

“Don’t worry, it’s just a little rain. We’ll be okay- plus, I feel safe with you. I know we’ll make it back fine.”

alan… my wife.. would definitely think about asking if you’re SURE. in that case, he’s taken it upon himself to keep his eyes on you like a HAWK, unfortunately intimidating everyone around the two of you.

You seem to feel oddly safe perusing the streets of CrimeVille, thinking back on everyone’s warnings of how dangerous the place was. This is too easy, you think, feeling like everyone was just exaggerating the state of where you two were. What you didn’t realize, however, was Alan shooting everyone the stink eye of the century as he walks behind you.

It wasn’t too long ago when you two left the OfficeCrap, the following conversation unexpected as you both walked out.

“I can do it myself, I don’t want you going to that part of town…” Alan mumbles, the soft mechanic noise of the sliding door behind you helping end his sentence. You only shake your head, shushing him before pronouncing how you’ll be fine, and you trust him to protecting you if anything.

Unbeknownst to you, that’s the only thing Alan’s been thinking about since you left. Fortunately for Alan, being tall and having a somewhat stoic resting facial expression, he was very easy to intimidate anyone looking at you.

1:06am, and the loud engine of Sebastian’s motorcycle paired with your surprised sound and his laughter rang through the empty highways right outside Pelican Town. It was something the two of you almost made tradition- you cover dinner at the Saloon and he takes you out for a joyride. Despite the multiple times you’ve been on the back of his ride, the small noise that leaves your mouth whenever he revvs up and drives away never fails to stop. He found it cute, honestly.

It was only about halfway through the usual path he takes when he felt the weight rest on his shoulder, the familiar ledge of the helmet visor pressing against the skull of it almost digging into the back of his neck.

He only looks back at you, a little confused before he turns and focuses his attention back to the roads. You’ve been on the back of his bike multiple times, you’ve never done that before.

It only takes him half a second before his brain connects, immediately twisting his head back around to try to catch your eye through your helmet.

You fell asleep.

The slight rocking of the bike on the road, his soft mumblings of whatever hyperfixation has his mind in a hold in that moment, the comforting warmth of his back on your stomach and chest- you must’ve dozed off without meaning to.

Immediately he slowed down his speed, reaching back with one arm to press against the small of your back, pushing you up the seat until you were flat against him. His hand remained there behind the two of you, his small questioning mumbles of your name leaving his lips unheard by you.

The turn he took to head back home was tricky- needing to slow down until the bike was barely inching forward and he was using the tips of his toes to move the bike to the side. Once the two of you were back on Pelican Town property, the dilemma came of what to do next. Does he take you back to his? Does he drop you off at home? Is it even late enough for the loud bike to not alert the whole town awake? Does he ask Sam?

Before he knows it, he’s rolling into the familiar farm grounds, where your dog was zooming around the bike and your cat was stretching on the front porch to come over. His futile attempts to shush the barking dog appeared useless, him immediately freezing up the second he felt your hands flex and stretch around his abdomen.

Zipping his hand off your back and trying to un-numb it, he turns his head back around and flips his visor up, the soft glow of your porch lights illuminating the outline of his face as you squeeze your eyes and yawn before blinking up at him.

“…Did you sleep comfortably?” He half smiled as he watched you, both hands occupied with rapidly petting the dogs snout as he attempts to climb up the bike from excitement. You only move to rest your head back on his shoulder, almost snuggling into it through your helmet before letting out a small ‘mhm’.

Thank God your eyes were closed, because the wide smile paired with the way his hand went up to cover his face was sure to embarrass him if he knew you saw. He already was planning how to ask if you wanted to rest on his shoulder some more once he piggybacked you to bed, just looking for any way to spend the night.

things to know: In this drabble, you’re Smiley Yanxiaos apprentice and work in the kitchen of the Wangshu Inn. However, your lack of adapting to water is shown when you lose your footing collecting ingredients and plummet into the cold ocean below you.

You’ve awoken with small, hurried taps on your left cheek, a moving shadow blocking the sun in front of you as you laid on your back. Your throat still a little tight from previously ingesting large amounts of salt water, you immediately took in two shuddered breaths and attempted to flip to your side trying to cough out the remains.

A strong hand pushed your back helping you turn, the other holding your bicep tightly as if you’d simply drift away if not held back. You didn’t have time to wince from the pressure however, the patterned cough and forced gasp of air occupying your attention before finally letting down and allowing you to open your shut eyes. It sure took a while before you recognized where you were, the blaring afternoon sun struggling to keep you smitten against the rough sand.

“You were reckless today. There are plenty of more secure areas throughout Liyue to go sightseeing,” a familiar man’s voice barked out near you, his figure slowly materializing in front of you. The blue haired man was turning you on your back once more, briefly dragging you forward until your back hit a rock to lean on. His thighs were situated on either side of you as he stood, unconsciously respectful of your body as only his hands touched and held onto your arms, elbows, wrists, hands, and back to wrists.

“Do not let me find you in this state again. A foolish choice like this will bring nothing but worry to those around, do you understand?” His grip tightened around your wrists as he repeated his last question with a little more force. One could’ve easily mistaken his words for those of malice if his piercing eyes weren’t blown wide. Not many can say they’ve come face to face with the Yaksha, but the limited rumors you’ve heard certainly never mentioned the slight fear behind his pupils. Or the way his jaw barely trembled not completely from anger, but worry as well.

If you weren’t speechlessly staring at him and observing every little detail, you could’ve missed these small signs. But unfortunately, today you’ve missed it. Being used to getting ushered away or discarded when asked to speak to the Yaksha, you simply did not expect him to be anything but mad at you. But that is the way of your current job, and you couldn’t find it in you to care enough to interact with him, no matter how many times the rest of the staff told you to be wary of your attitude towards your nations protector.

Trying to compose yourself, you unsuccessfully try to lean on your elbows to push yourself up and look him in the eyes. From the position you were in you didn’t feel cornered at all, no, but him looming over you in such a position made it hard to not feel trapped underneath him.

Still recovering from almost drowning, you’ve been opening your mouth slightly to whisper fragments of his name, never a full word leaving your lips as he stared at you with the same wide eyes. He didn’t seem to hear or notice these small movements, apparently occupied with longingly patrolling your face and chest/breathing patterns as if to convince himself you were okay. You WERE okay, just shocked from his behavior. Were you really in such danger when he found you?

Xiao must have felt you shifting about when he let go of your wrists in a quick manner, a quick exhale leaving his nose before hurriedly climbing off of you. Almost on instinct your hands followed him before stopping. His gaze never left you as you once again shifted onto your elbows to sit up straighter, one hand stuck in air as if you were reaching to an alley cat trying to console it.

“I’m sorry,” was all you could muster, too ashamed to look up at him as he rose and walked towards his discarded polearm. Your eyes were focused on the sand surrounding you two; the solid line leading to you indicating him dragging you towards shore. A single pair of footprints occupied the right side and stopped right beside you. He truly has not left your side before you woke up. “Xiao, I truly am.”

“An apology does not matter to me. I do not protect for apologies.”

He turned to look at you over his shoulder. “Please,” he almost mutters to himself, “return safely. And dry.”

A tone low enough to easily be discarded between the sound of the waves and far away birds looking for their next meal. Miraculously, even the wind seemed to stop only to let his words make it to you. It made its way back to flow through your now-dry clothes once he disappeared within a blink.

It was almost sundown once you’ve finally arrived back at the inn. Unfortunately you’ve seemed to misplace your burlap sack that you’ve taken with you, meaning your trip to bring back crystalflies was utterly meaningless.

You finally made it atop the stairs with a sigh, covering your face before entering the small kitchen quarters on instinct to avoid the hot fumes lingering in the air from stinging your eyes. It was almost a miracle you located your bag bursting to the edge with the shiny creatures hanging off the top of a chair, a small note folded over the strap with what you could only describe as a scribble for handwriting.

“If you must travel to the Guyun Stone Forest only for these, refrain. They are simple to catch for those with higher skill than a cooks apprentice.”
