ugh, i agree to an extent but you really can’t claim hair as “appropriation”. hair styles are not limited to culture as traditional clothing/jewelry/make up/religion is when it comes to special holidays and ceremonies/ect. cultural appropriation happens when you are intending to follow another culture/religion without being of that actual culture/religion. i did look up cornrows and dread locs and other hair styles considered to be “appropriated” and found nothing but opinion blogs. and from what i did read, hair styles were not considered appropriated without the following of other cultural behaviors expressed by the same person. many things in main stream culture are appropriated from all parts of the world, not just african american culture. especially not just hair styles. are many celebrities contributing to cultural appropriation? yes. but not every individual in america that decides to put a braid/twist/loc/row in their hair is.
hair is a big part of african (and african american) cultures my friend. just as legitimate as clothing or any other component of a culture.
and black hairstyles belong to black people because they work with the texture of our natural hair. straight hair cannot be loc’d or braided the way black hair can. :)
