The more I watch DW the more I realize Missy was right. The companions are just the Doctor's emotional support animals. The Doctor is that dog owner who swears they won't get another dog no matter how lonely they'll feel after losing one but still can't help himself when they find a stray dog on the street and feel insecure again about how they will lose this dog too eventually.

And the Master is that jealous ex who wants no pet in the house.
