it really is a testament to how bad Bioshock Infinite’s story was that my feed isn’t clogged with hornyposting about the Luteces. married couple who pretends to be brother and sister while actually being alternate universe versions of the same person. girlboss scientist and her boywife assistant. dress like the Doctor while acting out Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead bits in public. you fuckers would eat that up, but they’re stuck in the “there are two sides to racism” game

A week of Lutevent!

She had been so jealous of him; not that she could tell him that, pale and weak as those false memories made him. He told her excitedly about Christmas when they were seven, how they had run out of the house with their coats over their pyjamas to play in the snow. She remembered that Christmas well, the sudden, heavy snowfall and mother’s hand on her shoulder because little girls shouldn’t be getting their clothes wet. Even now that these memories were no more than half remembered dreams, he still got to have them.

She had been so jealous - until she learned that Robert in his thirties was as excited by snow as he was as a child. They had got dressed, for propriety’s sake, and hurried out of the house. Most of Emporia’s residents would still be eating breakfast but R. Lutece seized the day. Robert quickly made three snowballs, packed tightly, and began juggling with them.

“Sometimes I don’t believe we’re the same person at all,” Rosalind said, unable to suppress her smile.

“No you don’t.” Rosalind made her own snowball and bounced it in her hand. “Sister. You wouldn’t dare. I’m very ill. And besides,” he caught his snowballs in one hand. “I have more ammunition.”

On the sixth day of Lutevent…

“This is deeply unfair,” he pouted, dabbing at his nose with a handkerchief. “Nothing as bad as this for months and then just before Christmas.”

“Chin up. We can recreate our first Christmas together,” Rosalind said, her fingers on his wrist, her eyes on her watch.

“Oh yes, when I could barely look at you without my brain splitting open.”

“I didn’t take it personally.”

“You should have! It was entirely about you.” He removed the handkerchief from his nose. “And I couldn’t kiss you yet, it was no fun at all.”

“Given that your poor brain could barely comprehend that I might be your sister, kissing you is the last thing I should have done.”

“Shall we make up for it now?”

“Not with that blood on your chin, no,” she said, taking the handkerchief and wiping his jaw. “I promise you won’t miss out on the festivities.”

“What will you do, gift wrap the transfusion kit?” he grumbled.

“I shall curl up next to you and hand feed you mince pies.” She stroked his forehead and pressed a kiss to it. “Hum carols to keep you grounded.”

“Oh.”

“Not so bad a Christmas after all.”

What's through the tear for Lutevent Day 5?

The lab was often covered in paper. Notes hastily scribbled, diagrams proposed then discarded. It may as well have a second use, they had each said. 

Rosalind had a protractor, several slide rules, a craft knife, and a look of intense concentration. Checking her calculations a final time, she made one last cut and opened up the folded triangle to reveal a paper snowflake of equal intricacy and beauty.

“Excellent,” she said, and presented it to Robert, who was hacking at his paper with some kitchen scissors.

“I will say that I find them an unsuitable decoration for our household, given no two are alike.” With a sly smile, she slid the snowflake apart, separating out the two layers of paper, to reveal two identical flakes. He took one of them and kissed her softly on the cheek. “You think of everything.”

“Of course. How goes yours?” Robert triumphantly held up his paper and opened it out - a chain of figures, all holding hands with each other. Rosalind paused.

“It will look more effective once I find an orange pencil,” he huffed. “It’s infinite us.”

“I realise.”

“We’re all holding hands.”

“You’re soft.”

“Yes,” he said, taking her hands in his, “you are.”

Day 4! What are they up to today?

“I bring bad tidings.” He knelt on the bed and pulled the blanket off Rosalind’s head. She groaned and tried to sink back underneath it.

“It’s the furnace. I fear the power surge yesterday did for it. No heat.”

“I had already surmised the last bit from being able to see my breath in my own bedroom,” she grumbled.

“I’m sure I can find a way to warm you up,” he said, reaching for the belt of his dressing gown. Rosalind wriggled further down into bed.

“Yes please. A cup of tea and a hot water bottle would make a good start.” He dove under the covers and made a grab for her. “Don’t you dare put your cold feet on me!”

“Why shouldn’t I? They’re your feet too.” Robert pulled the blanket back over their heads and kept his sister warm several times before they finally got up.

Day Two of Lutevent! Let's take a peek through the tear...

“I fear that mine is woefully structurally unsound.” Robert pushed the walls of his gingerbread house together. “And anymore icing and it will be more snowdrift than house - I say, are you eating yours?” Rosalind wiped some crumbs from the corner of her mouth. “Rendering our device in gingerbread proved more complex than anticipated.” She snapped an arm off the collapsed heap of pieces. “Honestly, it was easier to weld the actual thing.” She poked at the two gingerbread people propped against the heap. “Still, these two survived the collapse unscathed.” “I can’t say that they look much like us.” “One can’t deny that they are at least ginger.” She picked up the biscuit representation of herself and offered it to her brother. “Robert. May I interest you in eating me?” He choked on the piece of roof he had broken off his own efforts. She licked a stray blob of icing from his thumb. “Sister.” He swallowed. “I think it would only be fair if we ate each other.”

Day One of Lutevent - what’s through today’s tear?

“I think it’s a ludicrous misuse of my discovery, that’s what I think.”

“Our discovery, sister.”

“My universe, my discovery.” She looked up at it again. “That generator overloaded last week, as well you know, and now you’re using it for this…frivolity.” She stepped underneath it, turned to him, and smiled. “When we’ve never really needed an excuse, now have we?”

Robert moved forward to meet her, the same sly smile spreading across his rendition of their lips.

If an atom, why not an apple? And if an apple, why not a sprig of mistletoe, suspended just above their heads in the entrance to the laboratory. Robert slid his hands around his sister’s waist, nudging her chin higher with his nose.

“Still, one must keep these old traditions alive.”

“Oh, one must,” she answered, their mouths meeting in a deep, indulgent kiss.
