i was a ponyisland kid and that has really coloured how i play other sites now - the core loop of breeding in that game is generating G1s that carry copies of multiple genes and can be any HEX colour, then breeding compatible carriers, hoping the baby receives copies of both the parents genes so it expresses visually and/or adds the right carried gene(s) in the lowest number of generations in the nicest possible combo of their colours, and then crying when they don’t because RNG personally likes to smack me in the mouth

FR letting you just slap visual genes onto existing G1s with a static, limited colour wheel means that i have no interest in breeding, ever, or buying G2+ dragons, because my formative pet site experience has wired my brain in such a way that they feel valueless

it does make my dragons more…. characters to me, Nauja is a stinky woods witch with a story and art whereas T014A-1 is going to be sent to the shadow realm the second he gives me the single visual/double carrier baby with a close to pure black body i need to continue my TV project

you can also make your dragons dogfight innocent animals in a coliseum for profit which is a big plus on the gameplay for FR, PI contesting doesn’t really compare

i open calculator to see how much it will cost me to turn my dragons from triple basic into beautiful butterflies. i see five point six thousand gems looking back at me. i close the calculator and open my saved scries. this is good enough.
