DJ NOBODY It was only right to use the track titled "Our last dance" ft Cedric Bixler-Zavala. You will find out why later in the interview but this is also a new personal favourite of mine. If you’re in touch with the LA beats scene and have heard of/or follow the Low End Theory night, then you will have heard of DJ NOBODY (Elvin Estela). As one of the original members of Low End Theory, DJ NOBODY has played a key role in the expansion and progression of this more experimental form of music. Having been to see the night in London whilst it was on tour myself, DJ NOBODY’s live set was an eye opener and had the crowd pumped and I myself was certainly lost in the music. For those of you who haven’t heard of Low End Theory: Low End Theory is a club night (originally from LA, CA) formed of experimental Hip-Hop producers coming together under one roof. Originally it consisted of Daddy Kev (owner of Alpha Pup Records), Gaslamp Killer, Edit (who was later replaced by D-Styles, when Edit decided he wanted to concentrate on music group, Glitch Mobb), DJ NOBODY and MC NOCANDO. Low End Theory has helped push artists such as Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing who’s music is now recognized internationally. Where are you from? I am from Carson, CA.
How did you start producing/Djing? I started making beats in high school around 94, and I didn't start DJ'ing until I had to promote Soulmates, which was around 2000.
What inspires you as a musician? Who are your most inspiring artists? It depends on where I'm at mentally, but these days I am inspired by a lot of modern music including a lot of rap and the Strokes. In the past I'd say the main influences were DJ Shadow, J Dilla, the Neptunes and 60's pop and psychedelic music as well as some indie stuff from the 90's.
What is your favorite track or production that you have made or been a part of and why? Right now it's the song I did with Cedric on "Vivid Green" called "Our Last Dance" because I have always wanted to collaborate with him, and his words and melody are so pretty and emotional and compliment the music perfectly.
How did Low End Theory begin and what inspired it? Low End Theory began with Kev, GLK and I meeting each other in the middle of 06, and Kev had the idea of combining us together to play records because he liked what we played. GLK and I would do insane psych sets together that year. It was like a bloodbath of fuzz and drums. Simultaneously the LA beat scene thing was happening and we all started to gravitate towards that as the sound of the club. Edit was the original 4th DJ and we had D Styles take his place once Edit decided to work full time on Glitch Mob. The primary influence is beat music. We were finding things from overseas but so much of our favorite stuff was made in Los Angeles, and for a time we were just in sync with what was going on around us. It has branched out since then, and we play all kids of different music now, but I still feel like that spirit is still the underlying driving force.
What are your plans for 2013? Hmmmm, for the rest of 2013 I'm planning on doing an EP and I plan on making as many beats as I can to get out there to rappers.
