VarTech's expanded line of fully-enclosed purge workstations are designed using an external purge system that can be configured to operate in Class I, Div 1/Zone 1 or Class I, Div 2/Zone 2 hazardous environments. The pressurized purge system protects internal components from ignition using a continuous flow of clean air or inert gas within the enclosure to prevent the ingress of gasses or foreign materials that may cause an explosion. Additionally, this flow of clean, pressurized air reduces the internal temperature of the enclosure and helps to prevent corrosion. VarTech Systems offers several purge styles to fit your exact application requirements.

EMI Considerations (Part 3 - Methods for Dealing with EMI - Conclusion)

Since the primary concern by VarTech Systems is radiated emissions at the front of the viewing window, the standard shielding methods will be reviewed first. The standard technique is to establish a continuous shield starting with the metal enclosure. The enclosure is masked, free of powdercoat, where a conductive gasket will be applied. This includes both front and rear enclosures as well as the inside perimeter of the viewing opening in the front enclosure. The viewing window, AR glass or touchscreen, has an added ITO film applied to the rear surface. Conductive foil tape is applied in a “U” shape buss bar around the perimeter of the window. The tape makes electrical contact with the ITO film. When the viewing window is positioned, the front side of the “U” buss bar is in contact with the conductive gasket which in turn is in contact with the unfinished metal. This results in a continuous shield. For most applications, the ITO film is used for shielding. Currently, the ITO film used has a resistive value of 8 ohms/sq. This provides a fair amount of shielding. This film permits about 82% of the image brightness, called transmittance, to be visible. At a slight cost increase, a 4 ohms/sq. film is available that has somewhat better shielding effectiveness but the transmittance drops from 82% to about 75%. For extreme applications, typical of earlier CRT displays, the window shielding was typically accomplished by use of a fine wire mesh. The mesh is made from wire that is woven in both the horizontal and vertical axis. The mesh is rated as wires per inch. A 50 mesh would have 50 wires per inch. While shielding effectiveness is better as the mesh increases in wire count, the transmittance is greatly reduced. Another consideration is that the mesh must be positioned at an angle in order to reduce or eliminate moiré effects which are seen as curvy lines in the image. EMI Considerations (Part 2 - Methods for Dealing with EMI)

There are considered two methods when dealing with EMI. The first is called source suppression which are steps taken when designing a circuit or system. Such steps include circuit waveform control, PCB artwork layout considerations, filtering components, grounding and shielding. The second method is called containment. This method is used typically when the designer has limited or no control over source suppression methods. This is the method typically used by VarTech Systems as product designs utilize COTS materials. Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is defined as the adverse effect on electronic equipment due to other electronics including video displays manufactured by VarTech Systems. The interference can be in the form of radiated and conducted emissions from the display which cause noise issues with other electronic equipment. The interference can also be in the form of susceptibility radiated and conducted emissions in which the display exhibits problems due to the other electronic equipment. The radiated emissions are like a radio signal which is broadcast through the air.
