Enguage -- Plot Digitizer
Ever felt the need to read values from an old graph or plot to compare with your own results? Well then you should give Enguage a try. I recently had to generate a plot comparing my results with some of the previously published results. I used Enguage to digitize all the old published results, and then could easily plot my data along with all the old data on a single plot.
Debian Scipy and ETS Update
I spent sometime this week updating Scipy and Enthought-Tool-Suite packages in Debian. The following packages have been updated:
python-scipy 0.10.0
mayavi2 4.1.0
python-apptools 4.0.1
python-traits 4.1.0
python-traitsui 4.1.0
python-envisage 4.1.0
python-enable 4.1.0
python-pyface 4.1.0
python-chaco 4.1.0

Indian Parallel Cinema...
In India, the term "Parallel Cinema" typically refers to the genre of simple, low profile, independent art movies depicting "realism" in an artistic way. Read this wiki page for more information.
I am a big fan of this genre of movies especially from the 1970s and 80s era of Indian cinema. Some of my favourite actors from this era are: Deepti Naval, Amol Palekar, Utpal Dutt, Naseeruddin Shah, Farooq Sheik, et. al.
My favourite director from this era is, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who made films of the similar genre like the Satyakam, and many other superhit emotional, romantic, sad, and comedy movies. I also like some of the movies directed by Gulzar.
Here are some of my favourite movies from this era:
Plotting streamlines using matplotlib
I found this excellent streamline plotting function written for python by Tom Flannaghan. Here is an example plot:
Gnome 3.2 on Debian
Just switched to Gnome 3.2 (available only in Debian experimental; Gnome 3.0 is available in unstable) and seems to be working fine. Looks really cool and especially the integrated messaaging system works great with my G-mail account. Below are some screenshots.

Rainlendar - calendar, event & task manager
I was looking for a desktop calendar to manage my tasks and keep track of events, and I found this wonderful calendar application called Rainlendar. The basic version "Rainlendar Lite" is free for use, and works great on Linux. Below is a screenshot of Rainlendar (taken from Rainlendar Gallery).
Video Transcoding on Linux for Sony Walkman
I recently bought the sony walkman, and was looking for some easy way to transcode videos on Linux to the sony walkman's supported formats: AVC, MPEG-4, WMV (DRM).
I tried many options using the ffmpeg library (found via googling), but none of them worked for me. Finally, I found the HandBrake open source, GPL licensed, video transcoder for linux. I was successfully able to convert videos for my sony walkman using HandBrake. I started from the default Apple iPod settings, changed the Video Bitrate (kbps) to 256; and used level=13 in the H.264 tab's Advanced Option String (see screenshots below; as suggested in this forum), and it worked!
Debian packages of HandBrake are available from the debian-multimedia repository.
Website creation experiences...
I created my first personal homepage in 2005 when I was at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, pursuing my Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering. That time I used only pure HTML to create my page. Since then, I have moved places and so has the content, template and URL of my homepage.
Since 2005, I have changed the template of my homepage at least 5 times. I have moved from pure HTML page to using:
Pre-designed free website templates (HTML + CSS)
PHP-enabled pages for integrating header, footer, menu, and other common webpage content
Text-based markup language tools like AsciiDoc and jemdoc
(I should thank here my friend, Kumar Appaiah, who helped me learn many of these things at IIT Madras.)
And recently, I changed my webpage template yet again based on this pre-designed website template. This time however, for the first time, I also used a JavaScript to create an image slideshow in the webpage header using this example script. (Read site credits for more information.) This was my first experience with the JavaScript-enabled webpage creation. Using some PHP and Java scripting tricks, I have ensured that the homepage loads properly also on web browsers with JavaScript disabled. (Please let me know if there are any issues.)
In all, this was a good learning experience for me, and I like the final look of my current homepage. I might stick with this template for a little longer this time. More often, I simply get bored looking at the same template for a long time, and decide to try something new and in the process also get to learn new things.
First post...
This is my first post to tumblr, and in fact my first online "blog" post ever! I do maintain a personal homepage at http://eccentric.mae.cornell.edu/~vh63/ but have no experience with online blogging. I plan to use this blog as an online archive of the interesting things I do, read, learn and experience at my work and elsewhere in life.
