He wasn't just being playful. He was cruel.

If my husband would have done it, I'd laugh my ass off. You know why, though? Because he is the one in charge of the dishes and the laundry. The idea would be funny because we're both comfortable with the way we divide our chores, and happy with the attention, love and intimacy we give each other. That's when it's time for funny playfulness (though I doubt he'll waste perfect good roses for a joke when they are this pricey).

When things are shaky in a relationship, when you feel like the relationship isn't equal, isn't supportive, that you're not loved - it's not the time for any funny jokes. Especially when they are flat out cruel and emphasize everything that is already bothering OP. The woman writing wasn't screaming and crying because of a joke. She was screaming and crying because of her husband.
