Growing up, Ruby lived a normal middle class lifestyle. No real ups or downs. She excelled in her school work, had a large circle of friends, was the apple of her parents eye.
When she was sixteen years old, both of her parents died in a car accident. She was at home at the time, waiting for them to come back after work and they never did. that summer, she was forced to leave her life in Louisville behind and relocate to Las Vegas to live with her grandmother, finishing high school there.
The accident left her traumatized and she ended up redoing her junior year of high school, so she had a later start to college than her peers. And despite some incredibly intense therapy, the bright eyed, fun loving teenager was gone, in it’s place left a quiet, mild woman. Although despite everything, she’s reasonably well adjusted and happy with her life.
Her parents life insurance paid out when she was eighteen, meaning that she put herself through school and helped support her grandmother comfortably without having to get a job.
After spending all of her college fund on her undergraduate degree, she made the decision to take a couple of years out to focus on saving money up for her masters degree, knowing that she couldn’t afford to do it any other way.
16 months into saving, which wasn’t going well due to cost of living in Las Vegas, a friend of hers mentioned dancing and the amount that it paid, especially if she could get into a good club on the strip. When she interviewed, the owner wanted to say no to the painfully shy young woman, but figured that the innocent vibe was it’s own certain niche. So that’s how she ended up on a pole, usually in a bastardized school girls uniform a handful of nights per week.
Her grandmother doesn’t know about her job, she thinks that Ruby works behind the bar, not on top of it. She wants to keep her grandmother out of debt and accustomed to a certain type of lifestyle, where she can give the other Mills’ woman everything she had to sacrifice to bring Ruby up.
She can be extremely impulsive. Often she doesn’t consider the consequences and just does things. Whether that’s from running her mouth or acting irrationally. This comes from her parents sudden death. She doesn’t want to feel like she’s missing out at all. Carpe diem, etc.
Insecurity plays a big part of her life too. She’s constantly second guessing herself and the choices she makes. She doesn’t want to let her grandmother or her parents down.
