Hi! Love the way you edit your pictures! How do you do to take the background off so well?

Thanks 🥰 I use the iphone photo cut out function or the combine mode in the photoshop express app (free, you just have to sign up for an adobe account). The iphone cut out feature has pretty good object detection AI but can’t be edited and sometimes leaves out bits. Photoshop express is dumber but more flexible. The most important thing is to take a photo where the subject is clearly visually distinct from the background.

Here’s what I begin with:

My room has a picture rail so it’s really easy to hang a big sheet for a backdrop and take it down when I’m done. It’s just 3m of 2.8m wide calico that I found on sale. Having a backdrop also saves me from tidying my room every time I take an outfit pic. Using a big diffuse key light (in my case, a window) helps soften shadows, which is handy because sometimes the cut out AI thinks the shadow is part of the object.

The backgrounds are edits of images of paintings and textiles in the public domain. The metropolitan museum of art is my main source right now. I lower contrast/ saturation and tone them to match the subject.
