Elizabeth Thomas was abducted by her high school teacher Tad Cummins in March 2017. Here's everything to know about what happened to Elizabe
Hi! I love your analytical posts about My Dark Vanessa. I was wondering what you thought about Ms. Thompson, specifically her relationship with Strane. Do you think there was something going on between them, or was it simply Vanessa projecting her own insecurities about her place in Strane’s life onto her?
Hi ! Thank you so much, i'm glad you enjoyed them!
About Ms. Thompson - yeah, I honestly do think something was going on between her and Strane. Not necessarily a full relationship, but there’s definitely a level of intimacy and flirtation that Vanessa picks up on. Even KER mentioned in an old (now deleted) Tumblr post that Strane was trying to cultivate a “more acceptable” relationship with Ms. Thompson - a grown woman, someone he could use to mask his real behaviour. She said in earlier drafts he even showed up at her dorm room. So the intention was definitely there.
And when you reread the book with that in mind, the difference in how he interacts with her vs. Vanessa is really obvious.
Like this moment:
He never makes Vanessa laugh. That alone says a lot.
And she’s also on a first-name basis with him, which Vanessa never is:
You know what before you asked, I never had strong feelings about her, but now i see clearly how she actually was one of the people who was closest to the situation between Strane and Vanessa and what she did (or didn’t do) starts to annoy me so bad. For example, when Vanessa hints that she and Strane are “close”:
Her first instinct isn’t to check on Vanessa. It’s to email him:
This whole email chain drives me insane. Because yeah, she couldn’t have known he was a predator — but she immediately frames Vanessa as the problem instead of considering for even one second that something might be off with him. Meanwhile, look how a different teacher reacts to the same situation:
Their first instinct is to question him, not Vanessa. She immediately picks up on how strange it sounds. Meanwhile Ms. Thompson hears the exact same thing and her reaction is basically “hmm this girl has a crush, better warn Jake 😊”. Like… be serious.
This is why she frustrates me so much in hindsight. She was Vanessa’s dorm parent. The adult who should’ve protected her.
And what gets me even more heated is thinking about the after. The book makes it clear she stayed quiet:
Because she didn’t just miss the signs in 2000 — she stayed silent even after the truth was basically common knowledge. Jenny literally tells Vanessa later:
So if students knew, the teachers absolutely knew too. Ms. Thompson included.
And what about 2007 when Taylor came forward? We don’t know if Ms. Thompson was still there, but I’m talking about the whole staff now. How was anyone ok with a man who’d been accused twice still teaching? Like Strane says, his colleagues didn’t start avoiding him until five girls came forward in 2017. Not after one. Not after two. Only when ignoring it became socially impossible.
So yeah, I do think there was something going on between her and Strane — at the very least flirting, closeness. But what matters more to me is how she behaved around Vanessa. She was one of the adults closest to the situation and she still completely failed her. Even if she didn’t know exactly what was happening, she sensed something was off. She just chose to funnel that suspicion into protecting Strane instead of a student under her care.
Sorry for rambling but your question unlocked a whole new level of annoyance I didn’t even know I had 😭 and ALSO sorry for late reply… I swear I’m not ignoring people, I’m just chronically disorganized.
i’m currently rereading my dark vanessa after first reading it an impressionable, young age. i don’t remember much of how i felt when i read it for the first time—probably something akin to disgust towards strand and pity towards vanessa. now that i’m older, it’s more relatable than it is horrifying, though both can be true at once.
your posts and opinions are interesting to read. thanks for sharing.
ahh I relate to this so much. I also first read MDV when I was like 14 and I remember being horrified but not really understanding any of it — it just kind of washed over me. rereading it now is such a different experience, everything hits deeper and there’s so much I didn’t have the emotional language for back then.
also sorry for the super late reply, you wrote this a while ago and I’m only answering now because I’ve been a bit of a mess 😭 thank you for your message, it really means a lot <3
Sorry I just liked about a billion of your posts but I just found your blog and really enjoyed your pov🫶🫶
omg hii 😭🫶 I actually saw this back in August and it made me so happy, I just… never replied until now because I’m a mess lol. but truly, thank you — your message meant a lot <3
it's vanessa wye season 🍂
Me after having read Strane committed suicide just when all the allegations of him raping those girls were coming out
I was also livid, but I think his death was ultimately better for Vanessa. It gave her space to finally start healing, because if he had been criminalized and dragged through trials, I don’t think she would have been able to.
strane, why did you get that vasectomy? why did u have little girls pyjamas in your drawer? why were you so isolated? where are your parents and your friends? you didn’t even get a funeral.
I feel like we dont talk enough about the phone calls, how borderline insane it is that Vanessa was touching herself to sex stories of not only of her and Strane, but also of him groping other girls. Her later saying to Ruby that she didnt care about those other girls and she knew that he was probably actively grooming them.
Its so complex how despite the fact that she was constantly dissociating during her sex with Strane, and that it clearly was rape, she still was able to gain sexual pleasure later in life from just doing it to herself alone, thinking about those scenes and of course talking about those moments with Strane. Maybe by being physically away from him, but still feeling his presence though phone calls, remembering the good side of it, like pleasure that she got from oral sex with him, she is still able to romanticize it, not only in her mind but also through physical reaction that she got from touching herself.
the way they were obsessed with each other, even though for taylor it wasnt for the same extent, for vanessa taylor was the living evidence that she wasnt special, that Strane was just a serial predator, that other girl.

Jenny
ok so i’ve been meaning to write this post forever because i have so many mixed feelings about jenny in my dark vanessa. like, the more i think about her, the more annoyed i get.
on paper, i shouldn’t hate jenny. she was 15, same as vanessa. she was right about strane. she did what adults failed to do — she noticed something was off and tried to say something. but despite all that, i couldn’t stand her.
because the thing is, she wasn’t a good friend. she always felt like this entitled, judgmental snob — someone who liked having vanessa around as long as vanessa stayed in her place. the second vanessa became “too much” or didn’t fit her image of what was acceptable, jenny distanced herself. she wasn’t kind. she wasn’t patient. she just shut her out. and maybe it’s because we’re seeing it all from vanessa’s perspective, but even so, the way she acted felt more self-righteous than supportive. she didn’t offer help, she just kind of…decided vanessa was a lost cause and walked away.
so yeah, i don’t blame her for reporting what she saw. but i do blame her for being unkind, for being more concerned with being right than being present. vanessa didn’t need someone to save her — she needed someone who saw her.
you can be right and still be a shitty friend. that’s how i feel about jenny.
Oh my god why is he asking her this kind of question ?
ok i’ve just reread mdv and i’ve never hated someone as much as i have vanessa’s mum, how did you feel toward her? do you blame her for not doing anything after she saw the polaroid??
Honestly, my biggest gripe with her is not trying to at least understand why vanessa was so keen on defending Strane. Cause I could understand her not wanting to contact the police cause the whole legal trial can be so dehumanising for victims, what I dont understand is her just acting like it never happened. Why not at least just talk to her, or if Vanessa refused to talk get her to therapist or something, just doing anything but ignoring it.
But i do hate her, cause what do you mean you found out that your 15 year old daughter had a so-called relationship with her grown ass teacher and the best that you could do is just say "you need to let it go". Like what ?
me when im having a good day but then i remember what strane did to vanessa and how she never got over it, so nothings funny anymore.
