Major spoilers for Backrooms.
I am coming on here to give the people my unfiltered opinion because twitter is pissing me off. Everything I read is either someone not understanding the movie or thinking they understood it because it was right there in our face. That the movie was simple!
This is the type of movie you need to watch more than once— like Skinamarink. When I sat down to see the movie in theaters I was surprised and intrigued by the way it was directed. As someone who was already a fan of Kane Pixels, and before his work, a fan of the backrooms I thought he captured the essence of this concept so well. Very refreshing.
I believe people who thought the movie was simple are not the kind of people to wonder why there was a fly buzzing around the bottom level of a furniture store. (To which if you heighten the brightness next to the POTS sign later on, there is a severed hand lying on the floor). Which, from those people’s perspective it’s understandable to overlook small details like that or write them off due to a “directing/continuity error”. Kane Parson is not going to serve you the answer on a platinum platter! His directing is urging the audience to be a participant, and to generate curiosity!!! There are so many things to reap from his content which make you go, why?
—Like the Still-life in red, why did she go running toward the corner walls when Captain Clark enter the room? Why did Captain Clark bite Clark? Did you notice that Bobby found the shirt he was wearing in the pile of clothing right before he died? Did you notice Kat and Bobby’s shoes sunk into the floor before they had even been in the backrooms? Where does the backrooms get this information from? (My suspicion is Clark’s memory).
My other issue are the people who did not like the movie because it was hard to understand. To which, each their own… but not enjoying the movie because it doesn’t make sense makes you sound like you didn’t try very hard to think about what possibly could be going on. It’s a movie you’re supposed to theorize about and digest over time. Yes, it is that deep BECAUSE IT’S FUN!!!
I will say the movie is non-linear… but so is the backrooms as an entity so it makes sense that what we are being shown is not the entire picture. The only shortcoming I gathered from this movie was the fact it was too short and I desperately wanted to know more about the MRI-turned research facility.
I have so much to say about the backrooms and a theory for most of the movie which makes sense in MY head if people want to hear about it. These are just… late night ramblings because the movie was so good, I cannot stop thinking about it. my thoughts are sort of scattered so maybe this was a painful read. sigh. Bottom line is that Twitter is a cesspool of people who are dead to media literacy. Deleting the app again.
P.S. if you didn’t like the movie that’s okay, it’s not for everyone but like I said.. It’s the kind of movie you need to watch twice and think about before things begin to click.
