Janet blinked when she heard her son’s voice. Her eyes widened, the pain subsided and the haziness faded.

“Leon!?”

She slowly reached out, taking the baseballers cheeks into her hands and feeling his face in her palms.

This wasn’t an illusion. This was real… “Leon… you’re… really here… YOU’RE ALIVE!!”

That…that he was, and it was still really hard to believe after everything he’d been through. “How–how are you–I thought you were gone.” Leon’s voice broke, and he felt himself starting to cry.

He was exhausted and terrified, to sum up everything that had been happening since he got out of Hope’s Peak.

Then he looked her over, suddenly urgent. “What do you need?!”

Leon supported his mother carefully, a hard determined look set on his face as he started in the direction of his friends. He was sick with worry but focused on his task, getting where he needed to go.

“I gotcha, don’ worry.”

Janet smiles at him gently as they start walking. It’s a bit painful for her now but she doesn’t give up for his sake.

A large female noticed the pair and made their way towards them.

“Leon, what have you found?” Sakura noticed the in-pain woman leaning on her former classmate and called to the others.

“We need emergency medical attention RIGHT NOW!!”

Aoi was on her feet immediately, grabbing some first aid supplies from a bag as Leon led his mother to sit down. Makoto stood from where he had been talking to Kirigiri to ask what was going on.

“That can wait, my mom is seriously hurt, man!” He was on the verge of crying or punching something. Or both.

Janet grunted as she was seated. Her wound hurt like hell, but she kept a brave face for her son.

“Leon, it’s ok Babe, I’m fine...”

Sakura made sure to give the Kuwatas some space before helping Aoi tend to Janet’s wounds. The disinfectant stung like nothing she ever felt before but Janet took it like a trooper.

“Oh right, I forgot I’m bleeding…” Janet said sheepishly as she looked at the wound. “Um, disinfectant, maybe a bandage to stop the bleeding? How did you find me?”

“Supply run–I just–I saw you and–” Leon was stumbling over his words. He couldn’t take his eyes off his mother’s wound. “I-I got–”

He slid off a black backpack, frantically looking for the first aid kit. He blanched. “No disinfectant left…” How stupid was he not to check that? “Mom…I can get some stuff for you, just…we would haveta walk.”

Janet nodded “ok... I think I can walk a bit longer. Just help your mother up will you?”

She slowly stood up and wrapped an arm around her son’s shoulders. “Let’s go...”

The skyscrapers were crumbling and falling apart, the roads were cracked and ravaged, now nigh impossible to navigate. The waters were murky, the skies were dark with smoke, this was the world since Junko enoshima destroyed it. But it was healing little by little.

Janet Kuwata staggered over the broken bodies of the latest Monokuma horde that attacked her. She was grateful to whoever it was that shot down some of the sneakier of the fighters but wasn’t entirely sure who it was that helped her. She knew it wasn’t Kanon. It had been weeks since they parted ways, but Janet was sure her ex-niece would pull through alright.

It was then that she felt the stabbing pain in her side, she lifted her black tank top and saw that a Monokuma had cut it pretty badly. it was bleeding heavily. “Damn” she muttered.

Sensing that another monokuma horde might be on their way. Janet sought refuge in the nearest abandoned building, clutching her side in hope of slowing the bleeding. She kept her baseball bat at the ready in the other hand, just incase she needed to defend herself.

Once she thought she was safe she sat down and pressed her back against the cold concrete wall and was now slowly losing consciousness.

“That’s it…. I’m gone” she muttered, reaching into her pocket which contained a photo of herself and her only child, Leon Kuwata. “I’m sorry I couldn’t avenge you” Janet choked. Just as she was about to black out she saw a figure running toward her

“Wait... Leon?”

When Leon saw the figure in the distance, he'd thought he was hallucinating. It...couldn't be, it wasn't possible after everything.

...right?

When he saw her sliding down to the ground any wary hesitancy dissipated as he broke into a full-on run. When he caught up to her, his eyes were wide with disbelief and fear. No no no, he couldn't lose her a second time.

He knelt to the ground in front of his mother, his own baseball bat clanking as he dropped it beside him. This...had to be a trick, right?

He slowly reached out, touching her shoulder to convince himself she was real.

"Mom? Mom, mom, mom," he cried hysterically.

“And here’s a little extra cash so you can throw a party for you and your friends. You’re young so go have some fun. But make sensible choices alright?”

Sensible choices, huh? Leon can try. He smiles up at her. “You’re the best.”

Janet smiles back at him and winks. “Only because of you babes”

She got up and rustled her son’s hair. “Time for ice cream?”

Janet smiles and helps herself to some soda. “So how was school? Did your friends wish you a happy birthday?”

Leon grins, taking a bite. “Yeah!” He counts on his fingers as he thinks. “Souda, Mioda, Naegi, and Maizono all were really cool and got me gifts!” He likes the one from Souda the best, and Naegi said his gift was going to be late, which just served to make the redhead extremely curious.

“Thanks for this,” he says, giving his mother a warm, sincere look.

“Oh really? You’ll have to do a present showcase at some point!” Janet grinned.

Janet smiles and ruffled his hair “Don’t thank me yet babes. I still have two more presents for you…”

She placed a small present onto the table. “Go on open it!”

Leon raises a curious eyebrow, tearing into the gift at lightning speed. What is it what is it what is it?!

Inside was a set of keys and some vouchers for motorcycle lessons.

“So… I finally managed to save up to put a down payment on a car” Janet explains. “But that means someone else needs to look after Red Devil for me… so, if you want him, he’s all yours”

Leon’s eyes went wide as he stared at the items in his hands. “What?! Really?!? Tell me y’ aren’t messin’ with me!”

“I’m not messing with you” Janet smiles “I even got him all cleaned up for you!”

Janet was gonna miss driving her motorcycle. But she’d been saving up for a car for years and honestly couldn’t trust anyone other than her son with it. In a sense, this was a more personal gift than giving Leon her lucky jacket at the start of the school year.

“So once you know how to ride it you can head out whenever you like. Happy birthday Leon!”
