The one eyed king
It was march, when I was talking about this with a friend of mine. A crazy theory at the time, not many were giving it much credit, but I had my reasons to believe that Arima (my absolute favourite character in the series) was actually none other than the one eyed king. I had a couple things to back my claim, not so strange after seeing the foreshadowing.
I always found strange the look on the eyes. Usually Ishida doesn’t draw things without a reason, and we know that very well with his death, in an official drawing that depicted him with a red line passing through his neck, foreshadowing the moment in which he slit his throat to kill himself.
But returning to his eyes, or his glasses, in this case, with the right lens dirty, covering his sight. Basically, I said to her that he might have been blind from one eye, or perhaps near blind, with really bad eyesight, and had this to help that theory.
Well, then I told her that maybe, the one eyed king wasn’t a ghoul. Maybe the one eyed king was a human with a bad eyesight, just one eye working, a human that had enough strenght to be known amongst all ghouls for being a beast, basically. And I said that the human in question was Arima. Now flash forward to today’s chapter, with Eto revealing that her and Arima shared the throne in a sense. She was the previous king, and Arima took the “crown” for himself by defeating her, leaving her alive. That was why he was so determined for Kaneki to be the one killing him. Not only he wanted the boy he watched grow, maturate enough to leave his suicidal instinct behind, to be the person killing him, stopping his suffering, but he wanted him to finally take the final step that was meant for him, having him decide to become something more for the ghouls, and to have him with the power to decide if he wanted the crown, if he wanted to be the one eyed king. Re, in italian, means king.
Almost crazy when I think that the answer was under our nose all along, but we didn’t get that until now.
