Assata: Exile since 1979 On May 2 1973, Black Panther activist Assata Olugbala Shakur (fsn) Joanne Deborah Chesimard, was pulled over by the New Jersey State Police, shot twice and then charged with murder of a police officer. Assata spent six and a half years in prison under brutal circumstances before escaping out of the maximum security wing of the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey in 1979 and moving to Cuba.  Since May 2, 2005, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has classified her as a “domestic terrorist” and offered a $1 million reward for assistance in her capture.

Me & Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn. 1/4 of #Tampa residents are black, but we make up 54% of those arrested, over 22,300 arrest. We also make up 80% of over 2,500 biking citations handed out. In Tampa's schools black students make up close to 1/4 of the population but recieve over 70% of out of school suspensions. The numbers to me mean that this city has an overall #zerotolerance policy for black folks. In Buckhorns city #Bikingwhileblack is a crime, Being a black student makes you more likely to get pushed out of school & into prison, and racial profiling is imbedded in the police departments culture. State of Black Tampa ( #SOBT ). @bay_area_activists

Recent local reports show that #Tampa s population is only 1/4 black, yet Black citizens made up 54% of those arrested is 2013. A total of 22,322 arrest. The highest in the state. Tampa is already under #DOJ investigation for racial disparities in # of biking citations given out ( over 2'500 of which 8/10 were black). The #DOJ needs to expand the investigation to include ALL arrest. @mayorbuckhorn called the DOJ about #Bikingwhileblack ,but refused to comment publicy on expanding the ask to make sure racial profiling is the norm in TPD policies and practices. I saw him yesterday and #BirdDog asked if he was going to expand the investigation..and he said no. cant say we didnt ask. #blacklivesmatter @bay_area_activists
