There’s a certain tiktok account that’s been causing some discourse in a few Helpol communities I’m in

It’s genuinely laughable how ignorant this person is

While I can agree and appreciate some of their view points, they also come off as extremely aggressive while trying to also seem educational (in a sense)

“You aren’t helpol if you don’t know how to pray!!” I guess beginners aren’t a thing anymore… While I personally wouldn’t consider myself part of a religion until i understand and have practiced the basics of said religion, some might consider themselves part of a religion for just believing (yes yes im aware of what orthopraxy means)

ALSO to claim you’re getting rid of misinformation while actively spreading it is wild!! While the gods most likely won’t hear a prayer without invocation, they will not get mad about improper prayer structure by a 12 year old. My first prayer was literally me invocing Apollo then subsequently crying my eyes out to him💀

There’s a difference between spreading your opinion, whether others agree with it or not, versus rage baiting and fear mongering

I’ve seen that another creator on here has posted about them too, but this is just my two cents on the situation

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve been close minded about this religion at times and while I need to do more research on Hellenic polytheism, especially in the context Ancient Greece and how that would be applied in modern context, however I’ll never understand why people act as though their personal beliefs and how those are applied to said religion is fact

The majority of my claims in the past have followed (or at least tried to) the cultural beliefs of Ancient Greeks, for example, the way they thought of death. The reason Hades is often referred to as Pluto or Plouton is because the Greeks were afraid that if they said his name and drew his attention, they would meet a premature end. Their prayers in terms of underworld gods were also whispered, and in few cases, quiet.

While I can understand having your own views, as I have mine, please understand that when working in a religion such as Hellenic polytheism, people will not share the same spiritual views.

I understand the belief that gods and other parts of religion will change with time, but some don’t think that way. Same with death. Just because you have a specific view on death, doesn’t mean someone else does.

I’m not saying that you have to operate with the same beliefs as the Ancient Greeks, but understand that some do, and some don’t.

This goes for me as well. Some of the posts I’ve made in the past have been insensitive and I realize that, and I apologize to anybody I’ve hurt with my posts

Historically, food offerings were not left on the altar shine, they were burned for ouranic gods, as the smoke would reach them in the sky, while offerings were buried to chthonic and chthionian deities (agriculture and underworld respectively). So, in the beliefs of the ancient Greeks, food offerings on a shrine would not reach the deity. They also aren’t considered votive offerings as votives are seen as permanent property of the god and food cannot be that as it molds and gets gross, leading to my next point

DONT LET FOOD MOLD!! I really couldn’t care whether you leave food on the shrine, do what you want but if you do, PLEASE do not let it mold. Not only is that a health hazard to you but the gods won’t appreciate it either.

Once food on a shrine is past its prime, you can throw it out, leave it outside (IF SAFE FOR LOCAL WILDLIFE), or eat it yourself. Though I personally see the last one as disrespectful if you don’t have much kharis with the god.

Quite hilariously, this is generally my first time interacting with "Helpol" through Tumblr. All my Hellenic experience comes from Greeks living in Greece. Thus, seeing the Westernised and White-Washed versions of things appear in my feed is so bewildering to me.

Why do you no longer want to worship Circe?

Mostly personal preference as she wasn’t historically worshipped in the same sense as other gods like Zeus or Hestia

The 16 year old sharing her religious thoughts as academic truths is obviously me so either tell me that what I’m doing is potentially harmful or just block and ignore me completely because being immature about it doesn’t stop the Helpol community from being any less toxic.

Why are people so against any criticism of practices or beliefs in the helpol community? I’ll be the first to admit that I am not nice about it in my posts, and that’s something I’ll work on. However I see time and time again, regardless of who is saying it, regardless of how, or even if they have academic sources, people choose to live in ignorance because someone criticized something they might do.

For example, leaving food on a shrine. Frankly I don’t care about it—I actually leave honey to crystallize on my Apollo shrine before I burn it. However, I find it weird to completely disregard what you’re being told simply because you don’t like it.

I mean, feel free to continue doing whatever you’re doing, that’s your own thing, but at least consider what you’re being told. Blatantly ignoring information can lead to just as many problems as being too uptight about information. Just like people choosing to completely disregard miasma simply because they’re not a recon!! Yes I will find any chance to bring that up!!

All in all, I will try to be more considerate in my posts, especially about controversial topics🫶🦄✨
