Drawing protective symbols with sand is an old custom from the rural parts of Poland, described by ethnographers already in 19th century.

The ‘sand carpets’ were prepared for religious feasts, most notably for Easter. They were often poured on paths leading to houses during the Easter Week, but sometimes adoring also the floor inside houses for festive meals, such as the Easter breakfast. They were carefully swiped away after the celebrations.
