Mica contemplated her offer quietly for a few minutes. The idea of facing his parents alone was intimidating and having someone there with him definitely would be a help. “I would really appreciate that…as long as its not pulling you away from anything you have to do..I don’t want to take you away from any of your plans.”

“Nope, I had nothing important to do today.” She shrugged. “I’ve been meaning to suggest we hangout anyway.” She lightly nudged his shoulder, trying to lighten the mood a little. “....And I don’t think you’re in the best shape to be driving anywhere.”

“I know…” Mica said quietly and stared at the bottle in his hand. He wasn’t much of a drinker but he thought alcohol wouldn’t hurt in this situation and if anything it would be helpful. It wasn’t. He placed the bottle back in its spot by his leg and stared forward, trying to calm himself down for Venu’s sake. “You would do that, as a favor to me?” He asked, with a hint of disbelief in his voice.

“Yeah, for sure! I’m sure telling your parents will be hard and I’d be happy to come along with you. If you think it would help...” She offered. Venus didn’t like to see anyone hurting, especially a guy who she would almost consider a friend and if she could do anything to ease his pain, she’s do it.

“But I don’t want anyone else.” His tone changed to a a mix of anger with his pain. He ran his fingers through his hair and and took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, you’re right.” He apologized, he felt convicted at being rude to her when she was just being nice. “I just…I still can’t believe it you know? And now I have to go see my parents, who are expecting to meet my now non existent fiance, and look them in the eyes and tell them she left me… I can’t do this.” Mica picked up the bottle and took a drink.

Venus jumped slightly when he snapped at her, though she wasn’t overly surprised. “No, I completely get that. Break-ups are horrible and it probably feels like it’ll never get better but I promise that it will.” She tried to assure the boy. “Getting drunk isn’t going to help you at all. If anything, it’s going to make things worse.” Venus took the bottle from the boy and set it down on the far side of her. “Well, if you need someone to go with you, so you don’t have to face them on your own, I’d be happy to help.”

Mica shifted in his seat to make room for Venus. He hesitated, thinking over how embarrassing it was to have to admit to what happened, then reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring. “She um..she left me.” The tears started streaming down the side of his face again. “ And….I don’t even know why.”

As soon as she caught sight of the diamond engagement ring in the boy’s hand, she had a feeling she knew what had happened. “I’m sorry... That must’ve been awful.” Venus pulled the boy closer to try and console him. “But you know what? That just means it wasn’t meant to be and that you’re going to find someone else who you love even more and who gives you the love you deserve back.”

“Y-Yeah, everything’s fine.” Mica started, trying to keep a straight face but as he tried to keep up appearances both his face and the crack in his voice betrayed him. He bit the inside of his cheek and looked down at the floor before letting out an exasperated sigh and looked at the floor again. “No…it’s not.” He said with defeat.

If she couldn’t already tell by his eyes, she could tell by his voice that everything was not at all fine. When Venus was about to call him out on it though, he admitted it. She took another step toward Mica and sat down on the step beside him. “What happened?”

Micka sat on the steps of his apartment, bottle of whiskey in one hand and a small diamond ring in the other. No mater how hard he tried he couldn’t stop the hot tears that were streaming down his face and onto the wooden steps underneath him. Three hours ago he was happy. He was on his way to see his girlfriend, bouquet in hand with a giant smile on his face. They were supposed to go out to dinner but when his girlfriend opened the door the look on her face told him their plans had changed.

Now he sat in his apartment building, staring at the ring wondering what he had done for her to cut him off so easily. He didn’t understand and the only thing the alcohol did was fuel his pain. It wasn’t until he heard a set of footsteps approaching that he straightened his back and tried to rub away his tears before the stranger could see him. Micka tucked the bottle to his side and slipped the ring into the pocket of his sports jacket. “Oh, hi.” He greeted the familiar face with a broken voice and tried to smile.

Venus was getting ready to go out to run a few errands on her day off. She had been lazing around in her house for most of the day, doing nothing so she had to get up and put her face on before going out. Venus grabbed her jacket and headed out the door. She was about to turn left when she noticed her neighbour, Micah, with a bottle and what looked like puffy eyes. She decided to make a little detour and walked over to him. “Hey, Micah.. Everything okay?”
