Shit. Let’s be tender in space
Happy holidays to @vera-ciouseloquence / vera_pocalypse for the @homestuckss secret santa event!
I got ya some jadedavepeta^2, i hope you like it! :D
AHHHHHHHHH THIS IS SO FUCKING CUTE!!!!!! your style is so pretty I adore it and you drew davepeta so well! the feathers floating around in space is such a neat touch! and jade’s dog ears they look so accurate those are so hard to draw!!!!!!!! AGH I really really love this tysm :)
lets make a videogame how hard can it be
nevermind you have to know shit about computers
hey!! sorry to hijack this post, but there are a bunch of ways you can make videogames without knowing shit about computers!!
for starters, there’s Twine, which is fucking great for making all kinds of interactive experiences (it’s what Crystal Warrior Ke$ha was made in so you KNOW it’s good) at all skill levels (i picked it up and made a game in two minutes a few nights ago)
if you want a bit more involved experience there’s Inform 7 which is a simple language for text-based adventure games that reads like slightly-weird English and also relatively easy to learn
you can do some pretty fucking cool stuff with Unity (my personal engine of choice) but you may need to dig a bit farther to get at the good stuff. there’s lots of really good presets though (i made an entire game just mixing and matching pre-existing templates and adding in my own art, won an award at a game jam for that one) and if you want help the community’s pretty dang friendly from what i’ve seen!
this is just a taste of what’s out there from what i’ve seen, but there’s so many cool resources out there. if anyone wants help getting started, i’m around to give you a leg up on making something in the coolest, most unexplored art medium around!
I’m addin’ to this post because lowering the barrier to entry for making games is super important to me!!!! If y’all have any questions about making games, you’re welcome to come and ask! I made this list a while back with some friends, so it has some of the programs John already mentioned.
2D Editors:
GameMaker : Potential for pure drag-and-drop “programming”. It is recommended to read-up on the program’s functions to make good use of it. Good for prototyping. Uses its own language called Game Maker Language (GML) that is similar to a C language (e.g. C++ or C#). For both Mac and PC; free version available.
Construct2 : Drag and drop level editor that uses an “If-Then” event sheet structure for programming. Good for prototyping and for beginners. For PC; free version available.
GameSalad : Drag and drop with no code requirement. Good for programming. For both Mac and PC; free version available.
Solpeo : HTML5 based game engine for 2D and isometric game development. Some programming knowledge needed. Platforms supported: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer 9+. Free version available.
Stencyl : Drag and Drop “programming,” templates you can edit the variables/values for.
Scratch : Lego-block-style coding platform by MIT; totally free and a great intro to thinking in code. Very kid-friendly and comes with a community site. Browser version available.
3D Editors:
Unity : 3D editor that creates 3D games. Can build games for browser, as an app, or for mobile devices (iOS and Android). For both Mac and PC; free version available.
UDK (Unreal Development Kit) : Full-fledged, highly advanced editor. Features a complete set of tools that go from level design to visual scripting to cut-scene creation. Uses it’s own programming language called Unreal Script that can be arranged with Kismet, a visual code editor. For Mac and PC; free.
2D Art/Animation Software:
GIMP : Free photo editing and digital painting software.
Easy Paint Tool SAI : Free digital painting software with a UI similar to Photoshop.
Mischief : Free digital painting software with an endless canvas.

Places to Publish/Share:
Itch.io : Platform for self-publishing games
Philome.la : Place to share Twine Games
@slimetony how does it feel to have your shitpost be turned into a helpful resource
It feels like a betrayal of every tenant of humor I subscribe to. Helping people is an alien concept to me. It makes me upset.

every few years i redraw this concept. dw, fef life’d kanaya after this and they had a laff about it.
are there going to be flashes in homestuck²?
the short answer to this question is: we don’t plan on it.
the long answer: maybe? there won’t be any flashes, but this doesn’t rule out the prospect of animation and/or music altogether.
to go into a little detail: shockwave/adobe flash is a deprecated technology that won’t be supported anywhere after 2020. in simple terms, we’re not interested in making something that will have such a limited shelf-life. this is also why the homestuck 1 website has youtube links rather than the original flash pages by default: in a little while you simply won’t be able to watch flash animations in your browser any more.
what does this mean for animated webcomics moving forward? well, there are a few possibilities. the big “new” thing is html5, which has been around for (checks wiki page) exactly 5 years as of tomorrow, and still has no reliable way to mesh music with animation in the same way homestuck did. there is also the option of simply animating for youtube and embedding the videos on the site. this isn’t ideal, since it depends on another platform, and in this case it’s a platform which empowers fascists while disenfranchising and demonetizing queer creators (but that’s a whole other kettle of fish). the point is, there are bound to be plenty of potential means through which homestuck² could be animated beyond the usual GIFs, but each has their own problems.
but that brings us to another, more important question: should there be flashes in homestuck²? when starting to lay the foundations for this thing, we decided that we wanted to run this ethically, paying artists and writers (i.e, ourselves) at least passably fairly for our work, without relying on simple goodwill and love of the comic to get things done. that’s all well and good as far as writing and drawing panels is concerned, but animating is a whole order of magnitude of scope beyond that, both in terms of sheer difficulty and the ratio of time needed to produce versus the total runtime. from the point of view of human labor, it’s a highly unfavorable equation. and that’s just the visuals—the music is a whole additional load of work on top of that, and another whole complicated story that i can’t really get into.
as of right now we are simply not in a position to be able to produce animation on the scale of homestuck 1 in a way that’s equitable for the people involved. however, we are artists, and part of our work is finding new and creative ways to communicate ideas. it’s a constant consideration. there are many other possibilities to explore other than animation after all. and if in future we’re in the position to produce something akin to homestuck’s flashes in an ethical way, we will consider those possibilities as well, but not before.
when the capitalists die out either thru global warming or revolution will we be able to start homegrown internet
been reading about dual power and how to grow my own tomatoes and i’m wondering how and if we’ll be able to start commie internet lol
like obviously the internet is this huge electric capitalist controlled hardware infrastructure thing so after all that shuts down is there a way to do it ourselves lol
i want to come home from a hard day on the communal allotment, kiss my Wife, crank up my generator, and start sharing meams!
GOOD NEWS: the homegrown commie internet is in the works! Across the world, people fighting against censorship and for a more democratic internet are building mesh networks (meshnets) of long-range wifi (LoRa)
Since wifi is just a standard for sending data through radio waves, and radio waves can go a pretty long way if you use ‘em right, it’s not that difficult to connect two computers by wifi from across town. Then you just keep adding more computers to the network and you’ve got internet!
Small antennae, like for connecting across the neighborhood, can literally be built out of trash
And a larger, more accurate one can be built pretty cheap too
(You can also reuse an old satellite TV dish, or really anything else that’s roughly parabolic)
There are LoRa meshnets in places like New York, India, and all over Europe: Spain (pictured below), Greece, Austria, Germany, etc
As for sharing fresh mëmês, the network to go to is Scuttlebutt. Unlike most social media, Scuttlebutt posts are stored on your computer and sent directly to your friends’ computers (rather than being stored on the cloud and sent to a central server). It works just fine over traditional internet, but you can also view and interact with it offline, and it has protocols for connecting over any means that two computers can share information - that includes LoRa, as well as hardwired connections, sneakernet (basically mailing a USB stick back and forth), etc
What that means is you always know that your info is just as safe as the network it’s sent on and the computer that receives it - no one even theoretically has the ability to collect and sell it all. And, since it’s all run on your computer, there’s no servers to go down or companies to go out of business that could destroy the whole thing
You can read more about this kind of stuff here (or here if it’s cloudy in Barcelona)!
there’s also the work being done by the DCPT, left-behind Detroiters meshing together their neighborhoods to share overpriced high-speed connections among the community and producing these good good educational documents, especially this rad resource page. building meshnets to share a global uplink is very similar to building meshnets for the purpose of intracommunication and these resources are useful in both cases
I’ve had a couple people ask about how to join/organize something like this, which is great! The best list of active projects I know of is here, though you should also do a search online if you don’t see one in your area in case they missed it. For those without a nearby group, put a pin here and try contacting nearby pins as well - you can use the instructions on buildyourowninter.net as well as the DCPT’s resources as linked above to get set up!
Please reblog this version so others can get involved!
convo that takes place when going god tier allows trans people to fully transition
Bonus section!
Just a few shenanigans that were not accepted in the final! :D It’s just a thing that happens a lot with art–you draw something, you submit it, and then you get feedback. Then you start over until his Horseness is satisfied.
And some conversations that I had with Shelby that I’m grateful for being I would probably die trying to keep this all in.

Homestuck Examination - Classpect Analysis Masterpost
Hello! I’m Homestuck Examination, and for a while now I have been doing Class and Aspect analysis stuff. With the advent of the Canon Aspect Quiz and some pretty interesting explanations of each Aspect, I decided to make a Class Quiz, which you can take following this link:
HSE Class Quiz
Ever since I made this Quiz, people have been asking me to go more in-depth about some of the Classpect Combinations, and until now I’ve been answering them separately- But then, given they just kept coming and repeated ones kept popping up in my Inbox I thought, what the hell? I may as well do every single one of them broadly and get it over with!
Below I’ll post links to analysis for each Class individually on its own, and a broad view over how each Class Pair would interact with each Aspect.
Creator Classes - Sylph / Maid - Aspect Analysis
Giver Classes - Knight / Page - Aspect Analysis
Visionary Classes - Seer / Mage - Aspect Analysis
Innovator Classes - Heir / Witch - Aspect Analysis
Taker Classes - Rogue / Thief - Aspect Analysis
Destroyer Classes - Bard / Prince - Aspect Analysis
Master Classes - Muse / Lord - Aspect Analysis
A foreword about this analysis, the pairings may not exactly match up your personal Headcanons, specially talking about the Knight/Page alignment and the Sylph/Maid and Heir/Witch pairings, but I do explain my reasoning in the analysis, and you should check this if you want a more in-depth analysis about the reasoning between these pairings and power ideas.
Furthermore, Classes sharing the same Verb are similar enough with their powers that they may be interchangeable- So what a Bard of Time can do, a Prince of Time likely can, and so on, so if you don’t exactly agree with my analysis, make sure to check the Passive/Active counterpart!
Hope my analysis helps you come to terms with your own Classpect, or think of fun interactions and things Players could do within a Session!
Kudos to @revolutionaryduelist for his amazing analysis of Homestuck as well as the little Class Cards, and to homestucking-girl for the base sprite I used for the Mage Class!
And if you want to see my original Post about the Class Quiz, you can find it over here!
