@veraavery
carolyn-wilkes:
“It has been a pleasure,” Carolyn stated as she got to her feet. She smiled brightly at Vera once more, then said, “Have a great day.”
wendythewriter:
“Don’t you see she’s clueless? Bit scared too…”
“Either way, don’t buy that. It’s awful.”
“Well, you certainly have the clueless part right,” Vera replied, shaking her head and rolling her eyes at the girl who seemed to be shrinking away from the situation.
“And what exactly about it do you think is so awful?” she asked, her attention returning to her conversation partner and away from the employee, “Forgive me if I don’t take your advice. Your own outfit tells me more than I need to know about your taste.”
claudetteurquart:
“That’s because people like showing off to others how much money they’ve got,” Claudette scoffed.
“You say that like it’s a bad thing.”
thehalfbloodprince:
Severus snorted in amusement. “As if you have anything I could possibly benefit from.” The very notion was entertaining to him. “Alright, you’ve made an otherwise dull day somewhat amusing. That’s worth a few moments of my valuable time. What can I do for you?” He asked.
“You’d be surprised, Severus,” Vera said, her smile confident, “There are plenty of things I’m useful for, even to someone like you.” She fished around in her back for a moment before pulling out a list and handing it to Severus. “I need these things.”
fletcher-mundungus:
“Why are ya here then? You could’ve gone to Corkbuzz’s stand and gotten yourself some fancy wine.” Mundungus frowned, a bit offended on the beer behalf. “Plus, we are talking a Jonesing for a Bonesing—it’s beer and tea, that’s the best bloody thing someone has ever come up with.”
“Beer and tea?” Vera repeated, her disgust clear in her expression, “That sounds absolutely revolting. Although it doesn’t surprise me at all that someone like you would find that appealing.”
carolyn-wilkes:
“Well, thank you,” Carolyn replied with a lively giggle and a little tilt of her head. “Oh, yeah.” She pursed her lips at Vera’s comment. “That’s a good point. And that would be… let’s say… quite unfortunate. Even if everyone knows how little reliable gossip columns can be sometimes, everyone still reads them. They are, after all, integral part of our society. We can’t escape them, especially those who come from important families like you do.”
Vera’s smile remained as Carolyn insisted that her family was important. The woman clearly understood who she was talking to. “Exactly. There’s no escaping the Rita Skeeters of the world,” she said, her disdain for the blonde reporter clear in her voice, “And us Averys have been at the end of some nasty gossip articles from time to time, of course. So I suppose it’s nice for me to be out of the spotlight in that way.” Vera would have preferred to be in the spotlight in other ways, but avoiding gossip was alright in her book.
carolyn-wilkes:
Carolyn offered Vera another polite smile, trying to shake off the unpleasant feeling that talking about Emory and her relationship with him had brought up–clearly that wasn’t one of her favorite topics. She was about to say something when she spotted someone leaving. “Would you excuse me? Time to get to work.”
“Oh, yes, of course,” Vera said, her tone polite, “I wouldn’t want to keep you from your duties.” Although she had her own private opinions on reporters, she gathered it was a lot of work.
macnair:
“Perhaps it’s the other way around, and I’m the one that’s not interested in anyone.”
“That certainly wouldn’t surprise me. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen you smile at anyone in my life.”
katmacdoozy:
“No, you don’t seem like a fall sort of person to me either. Definitely winter for you.”
“Well, I will gladly accept that generalization. I was born in winter, after all. It only seems appropriate.”
carolyn-wilkes:
“Is it still flattery if it’s the truth?” Carolyn said back to Vera, chuckling softly, a joking note in her voice. “I understand the feeling and I reckon that probably you are not the only one who feels that way. I was surprised too. But, these days, it can be difficult to wait.”
“Why, Carolyn Wilkes, I had no idea you were such a charmer,” Vera replied with a grin, before shrugging her shoulder, “I just hope for their sakes that they don’t rush the wedding planning. The gossip columns will skin them alive if the wedding ends up looking unpolished or tacky.” Vera’s smile remained; thinking about reporters speaking ill of the couple’s nuptials didn’t actually sound too terrible to her.
carolyn-wilkes:
Carolyn summoned a small smile in response to Vera’s anecdote about Holden’s stubbornness. “Yes, I do,” she replied after a brief moment of hesitation. “We do. And it’s more than enough.” She managed to keep smiling, although the mention of the ‘rivalry’ with Emory had made her feel a pang of discomfort and start to warily wonder what and how Vera knew about that. “It’s something only you two can deal with. I absolutely respect your decision to do so on your own.”
“I can imagine,” Vera said, shaking her head from side to side. She had her own opinions about Emory Wilkes, and no matter how much sibling rivalry there was between he and Carolyn, it was still probably best for Vera to keep her thoughts to herself. She herself was annoyed with her brother on nearly a daily basis, but she’d still hex anyone who talked badly about him without her express permission.
jenniferscabior:
Jennifer swallowed what was rest of her scotch, licking her lips. It’s as though she was pushing herself to be unpolished as could be in the presence of Vera, hoping to make her a tad bit uncomfortable. “If you were ever wondering where he conceals his wand, the answer is up his bum.”
Vera made a face, rolling her eyes at Jennifer’s language. “As vulgar as that is, I suppose it does explain why he hangs around with my brother so much.”
thehalfbloodprince:
“Perhaps you’d be more comfortable a few shops down. It’s a fragrance shop. You can play with their samples there and there’s no risk of you harming yourself.” He huffed. “If you’re here for potions supplies, tell me what you need and quite wasting my time.”
Eyes narrowing, Vera crossed her arms in annoyance. “If anyone’s wasting someone’s time here, it’s you,” she said in a rather indignant voice, “Treating me with disrespect isn’t going to win you any favors.”
mulcimperius:
“I’ll remind you of that in another forty years once you’ve bargained out your marriage.”
Vera’s face fell slightly, although she managed to keep her composure. “Who says I’m not currently seeing someone?” she replied, “You’re not the only one who can keep a courtship under wraps.”
luciusofmalfoy:
Lucius smiled politely and smirked inwardly. Narcissa disdained the Avery girl, he knew, but Lucius was certain the young witch was nothing to be concerned about. No doubt she would simply soon become another useful - perhaps exceptionally talented recruit.
“Joining the Education Department was much the same, though I imagine the work is less technical. Have you had occasion to meet your highest superiors yet?” Lucius added casually. The Imperius Curse was not difficult for an inexperienced but reasonably qualified witch or wizard to perform.
“I have met all of them, yes, but only in passing,” Vera admitted, “Although I’ve been working on scheduling an official meeting with one of them in the near future. Obviously my name goes a long way, so I’m sure that will happen sooner rather than later.”
fletcher-mundungus:
“If ya wanna place a bet on the winner of the pub crawl, you’ve found the right bloke,” Mundungus said, not even bothering to look to whom he was talking to. “But first,” he disappeared a moment behind the counter to pick some beer, “let’s try this.”
“I’m not a betting woman,” Vera said, her nose scrunching up in clear judgement of Mundungus’s taste, “Nor am I a beer woman. But please, go ahead and enjoy yourself.”
