âLook what I found at the shop. Guess they thought everyone would go on a witch hunt for whoever murdered those teenagers.â Veraâs amusement showed clear on her features as she toyed with the gun, her amusement doubling at her witch reference.
âHumans are so naive, thinking a strict curfew would make a difference. When has it ever?â
Vera had to stifle a snort. âItâll probably only make people want to stay out later anyways.â
âSoâŠwhatâs your name?â Daphne asked the woman.
âVera.â The witch answered simply as she led the way to her home. âAnd yours?â
âReally?â She said wiping her eyes. âI donât have many friends you know, so thanks.â She said.
Vera shrugged, clearly uncomfortable with audibly being thanked for something she wasnât intentionally doing. âSure.â She mumbled before beginning to walk. âCome on.â
âWhat do you mean?â She asked.
âWell, people around here arenât really used to ghosts walking around or people announcing they remembered how they died.â Vera responded flatly, just low enough for the girl to hear her. âWhy donât we go-â She stopped, wondering where to take the ghost. âCome on, letâs go to my place and you can tell me all about it.â
âIâm s-starting to remember how I died.â
Veraâs lips pressed into a grim line. âMay I suggest not saying stuff like that out loud?â
âWell I have lived in places with both of those⊠But Iâd deal with haunted over that any day⊠whereâs a better place?â
âLook, weâve had a lot of deaths lately, and Iâm just trying to stop one from being from something as pathetic as food poisoning.â Vera defended herself, a grin playing on her lips. âI know a place a bit more down from here.â
âWell thatâs not too bad then.â He smiled. âHaunted doesnât scare me. Iâve seen worse.â
The brunette shrugged his nonchalance off. âWell, I should probably also mention their plumbing doesnât work and thereâs been mentioned to be some... unidentifiable things in their food.â

He turned around and looked at the woman. âWhyâs that?â
âThey say itâs haunted.â Vera responded with a mischievous smile.
âyouâd be surprised as to what might interest me.â
âeven so, i have no intention of actually sharing. sorry to disappoint.â she responded, slamming her book shut.
ââwhat are you doing?â
she paused. ânothing thatâll interest you iâm sure.â
âwell, arenât you a studious little thing.â she laughed. effie had long since given up on her studies, her parents didnât really care and neither did she. she preferred to work at the little cafe on the main street, practice her craft and well, live her life.
âwell i have been known to be persuasive.â vera boasted with a smug grin, sending her friend a sly glance. âso why not use that skill in a courtroom and get some good money out of it?â
âthey do realise that we arenât miracle workers?â she sighed with a shrug. âtoo long in that shop down the street? itâs coma inducing.â she shrugged. âi get that herbs are a thing for us, but a scent that strong is a killer.â
âclearly not.â vera grumbled with annoyance. âbut as long as i get paid for something, iâm happy.â she said with a shrug, her lips pursed. âi am a law student after all, and those bills wonât pay them- selves. hence, all the fumes.â
âI guess this hotel will have to do..â
âI wouldnât stay there if I were you.â Vera spoke up from behind the male.
