I have not encountered the meanies you speak of but they don't sound like people we need to care about.

With that said, we've barely gotten to see the Heart Pirates fight at all. They're obviously a crew put together for stealth and/or medical operations, not for all-out war against multiple devil fruit users as with Black Beard and his crew.

The anime leans a bit too much into using them as comic relief which makes them seem like idiots in situations where they shouldn't be. That's sad but it is what it is. Personally I love that they're underrated because I think Law wants them to be. It also allows for lots of headcanons about what they're capable of and what they're actually like in situations they can control. Like, Law is a strategist and he's got a fairly unique ship with underwater missiles and he's got crazy complicated powers that he can use to literally move people around like chess pieces in battle. He's got two guys who swim like fishmen, can survive freezing water temperatures and apparently know how to sink ships with nothing but swords, spears and sheer underwater speed. They could do a lot of damage with that!

I think "weak" and "strong" are unhelpful categories whatever you talk about and powerscaling is a bizarre way to analyze a story. Law obviously didn't gather a crew of dedicated fighters so it makes no sense to rank them on a scale of dedicated fighters.

Also, they're adorable and they're Law's family and he's obviously a little bit embarrassed about them which is hilarious, but he loves them and they love him and they're his biggest fans AND they do a giant coordinated Charlie's Angels/Karate Kid pose every time they're introduced:

A friend called them Law’s Heroic Band of Normies, and I like that. This was before Penguin and Shachi got to show their mettle at Winner Island (Jean Bart and Bepo too).

They helped Zou defend itself from Jack, and were at Sabaody (Human Auction House battles). They went into the fray at Marineford (not the crews of the other supernovas).

I think they fought as much as Kid’s non-supernova crew at Wano. Toei did erase Bepo from some scenes and even transported the core crew back to the Polar Tang for a continuity break episode, and cut some key dialogue.

Oda made a point of either crew worrying about, but also defending their captains, and the captains of the rival crew during Kid and Law’s battle with Big Mom. I think Law is maybe embarrassed by the Hearts’ emotion/sentimentality/normalcy, but not by the Hearts. He calls them uchi ウチ/うち (home, household, family) in that Zou scene. Great commentary on it here. He had Bepo and therefore his crew’s Vivre card from before Dressrosa, and it’s mentioned a number of times in the Dressrosa Arc, and is crucial to the plot. Also, commentary here of how Law always intended to return to them after Dressrosa, imo.

Anyway, that’s not really about strength, but we haven’t really seen the Hearts fight directly, other than mentioned above, which is more than we’ve seen other supernova crews fight, bar Blackbeard. Oda probably sank both Kid and Law’s crews cos he couldn’t contend with keeping track of 40+ people, on top of the 10 Straw Hats and his cast of thousands. Unlike Kid or Luffy’s crew, too, the Hearts only have one member of the Worst Generation, but that also seems the rule rather than the exception.

But, yeah, I stay outa the power scaling spaces, but the Hearts wouldn’t have survived (as far as they had) if they didn’t have some strengths. Also, not directly related, but this meta (mine) from some time ago about Law’s relationship with his crew. Written just at the start of the Onigashima raid. I too believe they’re a stealth crew. It’s basically their modus operandi when Law isn’t being dramatic.

Other than Bege, Blackbeard, and Urouge (who hardly seems to be a player, but who knows), it seems that all of the Worst Gen leaders lost their crews. The Hearts are not the Straw Hats, and we live in hope, but Oda has definitely been restructuring and whittling away at the crews as the story develops.

saw an absolutely hilarious animal crossing theory that i now 100% accept and it’s that in the animal crossing world, humans are going extinct, and so all the animals have locked you in an elaborate zoo enclosure and are trying to give you enrichment. and that’s why they give you infinite pointless tasks, hide money in trees and rocks, invented debt that doesnt matter etc. it’s why they always act so happy to see you even after you raze the entire island, relocate their houses twice, and always act so pleased about your choices no matter what. it’s all to keep their little endangered human healthy and enriched. and thinking of it this way has genuinely improved my experience of the game
