Part 1
~
Virgil and Dee had met a few more times over the next month, Virgil sensing that they were growing from acquaintances to friends. They had even sat in Virgil’s room and hung out while a movie played in the background. He had figured out by now that Dee sometimes spoke in opposites.
“Why?” He had asked, his head tilting slightly in curiousness.
“I don’t have to do it all the time. It’s like a puzzle.” Dee smirked.
Virgil had nodded and that was the end of that discussion.
Dee sat on the couch in Virgil’s room, eyes trained on the TV. Today had been another day of filming for Virgil and the other light sides, and now Virgil was casually sitting a few feet away from Dee. He smiled. How was he lucky enough to earn a friend like Dee? Lost in thought, he hadn’t noticed Dee turning to look at him.
“What are you thinking?”
Virgil turned to look at him. “How I don’t deserve to have someone as good as you as my friend.”
“Nonsense. Of course you are. You are completely deserving of someone like me as your friend.”
He quirked a brow. “No speaking in opposites?”
Dee shook his head, a soft smile on his face.
Virgil smiled slightly. “I’m never going to believe it, you know.”
“Yes, you will eventually.”
Oh, if only he knew what Dee truly meant, maybe, maybe it wouldn’t have hurt so bad. Maybe, if he’d known, he wouldn’t have tried to get closer.
Everything was piling up. All the staring and snide comments and stupid nicknames were just piling up into a huge weight that held his heart in its strong grip and never let it go. He couldn’t take his mind off of them lately, which is why he’d chosen to shut everyone and everything out lately, even Dee, who was practically his best friend by now..or..was he really? He never really comforted him. On second thought he never really did..anything for him. Through his thoughts, there came a knock on his door.
After all, all good things must come to an end.
Virgil opened the door to reveal Dee himself.
“Have you left your room at all today, Anxiety?”
Virgil chose not to answer, knowing Dee would understand, and stepped back, opening the door wider as to invite Dee in, which he so graciously accepted.
“Dee,” Virgil spoke once he’d closed the door. “Do you even care about me? I mean I know I don’t do much for you, but I try to be accepting and I-I just, I don’t know, are you gonna stay?”
Dee smiled a smile that had fear rattling in Virgil’s chest twice as much as before.
“Oh, Anxiety. Sweet, sweet Anxiety. This was bound to happen at some point, wasn’t it? You’d question our friendship, question whether you need me and I need you. Well, let me enlighten you. I don’t. I never did. No one has ever needed you, or, if they had at some point, they never realized it.” He laughed as Virgil stared at him in horror, his worst nightmare coming to life. “The other light sides? They will never see you for you. They will always picture you as the antagonist. Thomas will never see you as anything but an obstacle in his life. I will never need you. That’s the truth. I’ve only just dealt with you because, well, it’s fun.” He chuckled. “You’re like a little puzzle. Maybe if I said a few more complementing lies I could’ve learned your name so that I could make this sink in a little better. You, Anxiety, are not needed here. Good day.”
With that, Dee left, leaving Virgil there, standing in the middle of his room, his entire world shattering before him. It felt as if his skin were on fire, yet he was shaking horribly. His knees hit the carpet harshly and with a start, he noticed his cheeks were wet with tears and his eyes stung with those unshed. Virgil took his gaze off of the carpet, which he was now gripping in a grip as strong as he physically could.
He looked around, at his room, the place in which he barely ever left. When he was here, he was safe, at least, that’s what he thought. Now, now he knew that he’d let the one place he felt safe to be invaded by someone who hated him just as much as the rest of them. Standing up on still shaky knees, he made his way to the bathroom, looking at himself in the mirror as he leaned heavily on the counter.
God, he looked horrible. It hadn’t been five minutes since Dee left and he looked as if he’d lost everything, which, if he bothered to think about it, was pretty accurate. Dee, his only friend, who he thought was practically family, had just left, along with all hopes of ever really being happy again. He should’ve known he was bad news from the start, from the moment he went through the door at the end of the hallway, but no, he just had to try to be his friend. What a stupid idea that was. Trying to befriend a dark side? Who was he kidding? It was never going to work in the end, no matter what Dee had said to him.
He looked at his reflection, squinted, stopped. His thoughts whirred at the speed of light, a blur of half-made comments and replies mixed with statements to create a jumble of words in which Virgil couldn’t decipher. He knew one thing though; anything was better than staying here, a place where he was hated by everyone he knew for merely existing. Shaking his head, he wiped at the running eyeshadow on his cheeks, effectively smearing it more than it already was. He could almost laugh at his situation, at how pitiful it was. He’d known all along that nothing good would come out of anything, but did he listen to himself? No. He didn’t, and he ended up paying the price for it.
There was no use crying now. What was done was done, and he no longer had a place. He was no longer..felt as if he had a place. Maybe..he should leave? Would that make things better? Surely it would, wouldn’t it? Virgil stepped back into his room, walking around and looking at the various items he had, smiling sadly at them. His headphones, normally his source of comfort on especially bad days, lay on his bed, undisturbed by the events of today. Next to them was his black cat plushie, especially helpful for similar bad days. On the other side of the room was his small desk with an old, dusted mirror and a few products of makeup that he usually wore. Sighing, he took one last glance around, filing the memories away before deciding to leave. He’d be doing them all, everyone, a favor, really. They probably wouldn’t even notice he was gone. If they do, somehow, notice and they come looking for him (they won’t), all they’ll find is an empty room, no Virgil in sight. They’ll be happy. He’d be doing something right, good.
With a nod, Virgil sunk out, but didn’t pop up anywhere. He detached himself from Thomas, leaving only the thought of him behind. He had no sense of time now. There was only dark. Nothing was here, not even him. He was freely floating, yet falling all the same. Distantly, he felt three different tugs, trying to pull him back to the present, back to existing.
