My very first post here. Just suddenly felt like giving my intro + my OCs.
Name’s Vergimyer (Vergi, Ver and/or Myer for short); a 21yo fella (They/Them) who just likes to make their own fictional characters, including these 5. More information on them may become available if enough people are interested.
These all come from my series Demons in New York (DINY for short);
Quince (He/Him): The main man himself. Bar owner within Brooklyn, New York and one of the most well-known Hitmen around, this Incuhound has a weird sense of humor and an overall desire to keep himself at the top. Call it thrill-seeking or stupidity, but never doubt him for a moment. There’s something underneath all his thick skin.
Evgeni (They/Them): Bartending their strange boss’ bar is Evgeni; a serious-yet-quiet individual who just wants to settle down and start fresh. Hard to keep the peace in a place like New York, however, but even they can be quite adventurous if convinced to.
Nikimi (She/Her): The group’s local government-feared firecracker. This Necrodemon enjoys chaos and has a knack for making things more “interesting” to say the least, though even she has her limits. Death isn’t one of them, though!
Tess (She/He): “Pessimistic Ma’am” she’s often called, but Tess is just all about the information. Quiet when not being blunt, she gets roped around the group’s antics, but yet never fully pulls away no matter how annoyed she seems to get. Just don’t be surprised when she stares at you for too long..
Hyku (Any; mainly He/They): The most elusive and peaceful member is Quince’s husband; a unclear entity of angelic appearance who’s near-mutism is considered a sweet blessing to some. Not many know of his origins or purpose, nor why he tags along. But plenty of others know that when he’s around, pacifism is always an option.
And that’s everyone! Hope y’all like it. Q&A within the comments is perfectly fine with me, btw.
I also have a non-oc blog for semi-daily rambling. It’s @oxmare554.
Since it’s still Pride Month, decided to reveal more characters of DINY’s gender, pronouns and sexualities. These are some side characters + antagonists.
Like last time, links will be provided for some of these in case people gets curious. Enjoy!
For an early celebration of Pride Month (Ik it’s early, but still), I thought I’d share the official genders, pronouns and sexualities of the main cast of DINY! I will provide available links to definitions for some of them in case anyone gets curious. Enjoy and happy (early) pride!
Hey everyone! Ik only one person actually responded to my post regarding this yesterday, but I still wanna give it a try. My writing isn’t probably the most “professional”, but at least I wanna show y’all the world I’ve created. Hope you all enjoy!
Quick TW: profanity & discussion of (supernatural) hunting, experimentation and taxidermy
“Remind me why we’re here, sir.”
The decently-sized office of a busy bar’s silence was interrupted by the voice of a stern woman. Amongst her sat four others; two across from her and two more on either side. Separating the pair of a tan man and his pale company from the others was a desk scratched with deep claw marks, splinters creating their own claws in the marked wood.
With a rasping hum, the man sighs, speaking. “You always get suspicious of me whenever I call you over, huh Tess?” He almost coos with the slightest tinge of seduction. A subtle show of his partial bloodline. The voice his mouth uttered was lowly deep, wheezing with sharp edges as if he was barely possessing any air in his lungs to make a sound.
Tess’ nose scrunched at the lewdness in this man’s voice, disgust piercing her words as she answers. “Can you blame me, sir? You’re always up to something, especially when you call us all here.”
“I second that.” Piping in was a younger person who stood left of Tess, their glasses being pushed up to face the man at the desk. “No offense, sir..but you’re a mischievous devil.”
“Mischievous is a massive understatement.” Tess mutters with a roll of her eyes.
To the right was a darkly red-skinned woman who sat on the floor, watching with yellowy-green eyes. She faces Tess while listening to her and the other person farthest from her side, adding in her two cents. “I don’t think Mr. Quince would put us in actual danger. Besides, chaos makes things a bit more..well, fun!”
Quince smiles as the assistance of his fellow demonic, but it fades away with a click of his tongue. “Tess, Evgeni..I thought you knew me better than that. Nikimi seems to know me better than both you peas in the cynical pod combined.”
“She’s literally the same type of kind you are, sir.” Evgeni sighs out. “And immortal. Of course she would be most supportive of your antics.”
Tess pause in thought before facing the final member in the room across from her. “Hyku..why did he call us over?” She asks, her bitter tone temporarily softened by the sweetness of which she tries to replace it with.
Hyku doesn’t vocally budge out the answer. Sitting on Quince’s lap, a mere trill of a cat rustles from his throat outwards. He stayed still as well, acting like a cat sitting on its favored owner.
“Leave him outta this.” Quince spat out with a venomous growl, his fingers moving through the hair of his accompanying dearest. “He came on his own anyway, so he really didn’t need to be here for what we’ll be talking about.”
“Which is..?” Nikimi inquires, her question more kinder than her peers.
Quince takes a deep breath. “The fucking vermins are out on the hunt again.”
“Project Rat?” Tess slightly corrects.
Quince nods.
Evgeni groans at that. “Great. Those bastards really can’t learn the lesson, can’t they?”
“Apparently not, Ev.” Tess hums.
Nikimi couldn’t help but tilt her head, scratching it in slightly confusion. “I thought they went to experimenting on us a handful of years ago..”
“Taxidermy season, Niki.” Evgeni explains. “At least that’s my guess.”
“And to think that merely making it illegal would stop them..” Tess adds with cynical sarcasm.
Hyku trills through the natural purring caused by Quince’s hair playing, tilting his head in thought as his shut eyes squeezed a bit; a strange form of ‘blinking’ perhaps.
“So what do we do, sir?” Nikimi asks with a tilting head. “I mean, I can technically take them out, but I..don’t think you wanna take it to the level of military-level clearing just yet.”
“Correct.” Quince states. “As much as I want to pulverize the shitheads outta existence, even I’m aware of how unsuccessfully dangerous that could be.”
“Then what do you suggest we do instead?” Evgeni questions, squinting their eyes.
Quince faces Tess. “Can you get information on their database?”
“Yes, I can, but it’s gonna take me a few days to get in there.” Tess answers.
Quince hums. “I’ll take it. In the meantime, I don’t want anyone of you out in the city for too long.”
“What, you think they could be doing it in the open?” Evgeni questions, snorting at the hypothetical with an eyeroll. “I don’t think they’re that stupid, sir.”
“While I agree with that there, Ev..I think they would be ballsy enough to make themselves that much of a public threat.” Tess states. “I’m more suspiciously concerned about what they’re selling in the black markets. Especially if it is Taxidermy season.”
Nikimi perks her head up at that, hopping onto her feet and standing at attention. “I can check that out.” She suggests while looking at Tess, slightly glancing at Quince as she speaks. “I’ve been in there before after all.”
“You really sure you wanna take the risk?” Evgeni asks, raising an eyebrow.
Nikimi nods. “At the very least, they can’t kill me.”
Evgeni sighs at that, barely holding back a chuckle as they shake their head. “You’re an oddball, Niki.”
“But it could help exponentially.” Tess expresses, facing Nikimi fully. “If you can retrieve any of the shit they’re selling, that’ll make them lose out money on that wager at the very least.”
Nikimi nods, saluting with a smile.
“At least we have that plan in motion.” Quince assesses, nodding in approval. “But mark this. If any of those fuckers try to get any of you..give them no mercy. They don’t deserve that.”
“Well aware, sir.” Tess replied.
Evgeni merely nods in agreement with Tess.
“Good.” Quince nods back before looking at Hyku. Holding him close, he thinks before coming to a conclusion. “I’m not letting them use you again, sweetheart. Not on my watch..”
Anyone interested in a small story kinda one-shot of my OCs (the main gang specifically)? Ngl it’s been tempting to show y’all a snippet of them. But hey; rather be safe than sorry. It’ll most likely be posted here first and then maybe on A03, but we’ll see.
Another fun fact y’all should know; the word “Demons” in the series’ title is both literal and metaphorical/figurative.
Yes, there are literal demons within the setting. But the word takes on a more subtle double-meaning when you consider the concept that everyone—even actual Demons—have their devils. Their personal vices. That is the metaphorical meaning to the word.
Everyone has their Demons in various forms, manners and causes with some being more visible than others. DINY as a whole in its sorta slice-of-life-esque nature explores the Demons within Quince, Evgeni, Nikimi, Tess and Hyku alongside others; antagonists included.
Keeping in mind as an addition to this is that aside from Hyku, the main cast are neither purely good nor purely evil; especially Quince. They each have their own complexities, moralities and overall nature which are more gray than black and white even if it seems that way on the surface. Every action they make has their intentions, motivations and consequences/effects, although some reasons will be revealed later than others.
Overall I hope to one day share the exploration of them and the others within the universe with you all. Because trust me; this series is my baby.
So fun fact; Quince is a Dark Grey Wolf. Well, technically; moreso he’s a Dark Grey Hellwolf/Hellhound (in my verse, Hellhounds can vary in appearance due to various canis types existing).
When in his True Form (since he’s often in what’s called his Mid-Mortal Form; a form that resembles a Human to Humanoid shape while still retaining all Demonic features (tail, horns, etc)), his fur sorta resembles this reference photo I found.
Note that the eyes are actually different as well; Quince does have Heterochromia (right eye is orange; left eye is purple) with pupils that’re also different shapes (right is in the shape of a spade; left is in the shape of a (card suit) diamond).
His entire body isn’t completely canine-fied either due to his hybridism. It actually goes from his head (which does become wolf/canine-shaped too) down to an inch or two above his stomach, turning his chest (he has Gynecomastia) into chest fluff/fur and only his left arm is affected, leaving the right one the same way as his Mid-Mortal Form. His legs from (and including) his knees downward are also canine-fied and furred, extending his height further as well (from 6’1” to around 7’6”).
Maybe when I get some drawing skills in, I’ll finally sketch him out and show y’all. Until then, this description will hopefully work lol.
Watching Frieren (good anime btw, check it out; 2 episodes in) has given me slight inspiration for how to tackle Immortality and Longevity in DINY. Especially how both can be viewed by people (including those who are Mortal).
Think about it; one Immortal could think that their eternal life is a blessing of which frees them from the looming threat of death and erases that anxiety their family and/or friends may experience on the concept of demise. They may even feel empowered by possessing an endless existence, viewing it as a gift to let them help others, go on adventures or just do whatever they want with no true consequence.
On the other hand, a separate Immortal may feel cursed by the endless plague of undying. Deathlessness does not equal painlessness after all; they can still feel pain. They can still get hurt. Injured. Maimed, even. And despite what their body sustains; they’re forced to keep moving forward. A comatosed state—at absolute best—is temporary rest. At absolute worst, it’s a teasing punishment. Dangling the sensation of passing on only to snatch it away and be forced back into living. Not to mention the burden of seeing time pass on when they—by technical means—are forced to stand still. People pass away around them and they cannot join them in the afterlife, be it above, below, in between or somewhere else entirely.
There are definitely those who may feel both or in-between these two perspectives. Or they may feel something entirely different. The possibilities are infinite in technicality.
I have 2 main Immortals within DINY (Nikimi—as previously hinted before—and one that I’ll leave open for guessing). Both have the potential to explore mortality, purpose of life and the overall sensation of uncontrollable self-continuation. And trust me, I definitely plan to explore their respective experiences and perspectives on the concept alongside the outsider mindsets as well. Because even those who have an end date have varying opinions on the matter.
