The problem with commercial F/M romance is that it's written by the most heterosexual women alive and reading it you feel yourself slowly suffocating from the Gender of it all like a fish in a eutrophying lake. And what we actually need as a culture is F/M written by insane bisexuals violently allergic to heteronormativity

We're out here, some of us are even non-binary as well as bisexual.

But it does get problematic when people try to run us through some kind of "defeating heteronormativity" test. I had a pretty wild encounter on Mastodon once with someone who was deeply upset that a random selection of three screenshots from Made Marion was not actively rebelling against heteronormativity to their standards. It wasn't "visibly queer" enough for them.

Well, sorry, we're not all "visibly queer" all the time (whatever that means since it sure does vary across generations and cultures). And no single person on earth is 100% gender nonconforming.

I get how OP feels and have felt it myself, but I also know that the people who end up taking the most flack for how gender and sexuality are represented in stories are the ones who aren't cis or straight and are writing things informed by their own experiences. Because our actual experiences are complicated and messy and aren't going to hit the platonic ideal of anything.

I don't think most of us are out here trying to personally defeat the concept of heteronormativity. I'm just writing characters that speak to me and quite a few of them are queer even when they're in relationships that appear to be heterocis. I'm super happy when my characters speak to people, that's awesome! But despite being quite politically left myself, I'm not writing to pass an imaginary progressive purity test. I'm trying to depict humans and their imperfections.

When you try to shove marginalized writers into a box of perfect representation, you're just going to end up with fewer marginalized writers.

I JUST played Blooming Panic for the first time and OH MY GOD, MY HEART-

The second they muttered under their breath I went through so many emotions at once

Man I like that nerd.

The only thing I got sad about is that I can't actually pick my real answer; cause the thing that literally made me fall was how he JUMPS from being that responsible, reasonable adult to a very passionate and enthusiastic nerd. I love people who just have that one thing that really turns them into an encyclopedia and I feel like Toasty totally would be that, if I had the chance to ask more of their games' lore or FFXIV lmao

My only problem with developing a visual novel myself is THAT THERE IS SO MANY GREAT ONES ALREADY INSPIRING ME SO MUCH IT'S HARD TO GET THEM OUT OF MY BRAIN WHILE TRYING TO WRITE MY SCRIPT WITHOUT ACCIDENTALLY GETTING TOO MUCH INTO FANON THINKING OF OTHER VISUAL NOVELS!!!

honorable mentions, because honestly I might post fanart or my own MC's of said games (and double-honestly it's no secret that those games are amazing and inspiring so even if I try so hard to NOT copy anything, they are still haunting my thoughts)
