Why did I ever

leave behind

the very things

that helped me survive?

Who am I

without the ink

in the pen

spilled on pages

printed in stories?

How could I

be so selfish

to leave behind

what kept me alive?

I try to return

to the quiet comfort

of paper and ink

but I keep slipping

failing

again and again

And now

they look at me

like strangers

the words

the pen

watching in silence

with a certain kind of ache
