during their first meeting, winry wanted nothing to do with riza. she didn’t want to like this woman who did nothing but remind her of the people that told her her parents were gone. & she was there to take her only friends away. but the things riza said made a huge difference. before then, winry had never properly dealt with the loss of her parents. she was too young to know how to. she felt empty & lonely, & heavily attached to what she had left.
riza highlighting that it’s ed & al’s choice to leave, to move forward, holds more meaning beyond just the brothers. winry has been so stuck, blaming & hating the people that took her parents from her. if the brothers can move forward, so can she.
‘there’s someone i have to protect’ is what motivates winry to take up the family trade. her parents were skilled with automail, as is pinako. she knows how well it works for people with lost limbs, & she realizes she can help. the brothers might leave, but she can do what she can to make sure ed is outfitted with the best automail.
riza inspired her to move forward & to do what she has to to keep them safe. she starts to realize, after that initial meeting, how strong of a person the lieutenant is. she reminds winry of her mother, beyond just physical appearance, as a woman that braves what she must for people she cares about.
she wants to, one day, be as strong of a person as riza.
