What can possibly overcome this fear?
Courage. It's a hard thing to master, because it's been noted by many acclaimed persons (i.e. Mark Twain and others) that courage is not the absence of fear. It is the mastery of it. This implies that there are, indeed solutions.
Obviously, there are different solutions to different fears.
Not so obviously, there is no trust without fear.
Did you ever wonder why the phrase "God-fearing" even incorporated the word "fear" in the first place?
To be God-fearing is to be a one who worships, or at the very least, believes in, God: to invest all trust in the Supreme Being. When confiding in a friend, you trust them. You believe that they will hold your troubles in their hearts and tell no one...but don't you fear that someone might find out anyway? It's an interesting thought to ponder: Whatever you're confiding in a friend supports some level of fear. A surprise birthday party? There is the minor and harmless fear of a ruined surprise. A stain on your mother's carpet, conveniently hidden beneath a rug? The fear of scolding/punishment underlies the trust. Something as serious as a crime? Life endangerment?
"Shhh. Don't tell anyone."
"Don't tell her! I might get in trouble."
"Please don't tell anyone...I don't know what would happen to me."
There is no trust without fear.
There is healthy fear, however. Just as fear of a spoiled surprise is harmless and even fun and exciting, there is fear that is exciting and healthy. It is healthy to be afraid of things that can cause physical harm, until it becomes obsessive (and you, no doubt, become labeled a worrywart). It is, as mentioned above, a healthy fear to fear the Lord. He brought you into this world, He can take you out of it. However, fear the Lord because He is powerful and all-knowing, not because you think He may hurt you. Fear Him in an sense of awe. Fear Him because he is unfathomable.
We are afraid mostly of what we do not know.
Going somewhere for the first time?
Why do we fear them? Because we don't know what they have in store for us.
