N A T U R E 🌀 Paul Cezanne painted what he felt versus what he saw which went against the standards of his time. He would study his subject for hours and then paint with his heart. By doing so, he captured the essence of the subjects beauty. Yet, underappreciated during his lifetime even while having a profound effect on twentieth century art. Art and Nature have a close relationship. Nature is one of the most treasured muses, providing endless inspiration. Art can connect us to nature, help us make sense of a complex world and open us up to new perspectives. As I'm stocking my art studio to paint I am also reminded of the seasonal cyclical way that I create. Winter I retreat into the studio for experimentation and exploration. Spring I emerge to cultivate and create works. Summer I explore nature and my surroundings for inspiration. In Fall and early winter I rest. And on and on, and on and on… Inspiration is all around you. For businesses and creatives, whether you're pumping out content or creating art pieces, it's about finding your own rhythm. I N D U S T R I A L My work is never boring and the coolest thing about it is meeting new people and getting to learn about different industries. Growing up, I wanted to be a journalist and went to one of the top J-Schools in the country but following my gut, switched my studies to Communications and Digital Media. Guess what? I'm still sort of a journalist. Website design is more than sitting behind a computer and coding. It also involves getting to know your clients, their staff and customers to build a website that both meets their customer needs and tells their story. Last week I got to hang out with Johnny. Such a kind and friendly guy operating these monster machines. I learned about safety, got to document some welding and see the Piranha in action. MLK once said that the world needed more creatively maladjusted people. Everything about our fragmented society makes it harder and harder to hold on to imagination and the creative spirit. Linear and concrete methods of learning are more common and valued than non-linear and abstract methods. Yet, we push on towards progress hoping the world will hear us. Creatives, no matter the craft are the nemesis to fragmentation and specialization. Art movements have always been significant to the awareness of media, innovations and its effects on society. "The beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms." - Unknown This quote has been widely attributed to Socrates. As someone that became a philosophy NERD 🤓 during my college studies, I don't recall ever coming across this quote. However, much of what we know about him was transcribed by his students because Socrates (like Pythagoras, the Buddha and Jesus) never wrote anything down. Platos' Socrates was dope and he did actually talk about the awareness of one's own ignorance as the beginning of wisdom. Whether Socrates said this quote or not, it's important to recognize that knowledge does not always equal wisdom. You can learn term after term and fail to comprehend and apply that knowledge. When I begin work to define a brand, whether as consultant or designer, terms translate to knowledge, knowledge sparks ideas and inspiration which then allows me to dig deeper into just a few terms and apply my knowledge. For instance, some designers will filter through thousands of typefaces or symbols and say, "This one looks cool." What the actual F does "this looks cool" mean⁉️ 🤷🏾‍♀️ Absolutely nada, if that's where you stop. What about who designed the letterform, when, why and what for? What other uses of this typeface or symbol exist and where were they applied? Not only does this produce a more desirable result but it also honors the creative. Sure, I'm artistic, know several software platforms and operate various types of multimedia equipment but that is actually not my value proposition. Whose fine motor skills are being tested today? (Meeeeee oh oh meee! 🤗) Every move of a point on a vector object. Every kern of a letter. Every sweep of a digital brush. Scrutinized and perfected. Pincer grips and mouse clicks. Blurred vision and carpel tunnel. Is this obsession with perfection a flaw? I've come to think of it as my super power. I've been fascinated with rain storms ever since I could remember. I was the "weird" kid that would sit and stare at the clouds. Imagine my excitement when my favorite meteorologist visited my grade school. FINALLY someone who shares my affinity for cumulonimbus and nimbostratus! Science has managed to create a level of predictability but many aspects of storms are still a mystery. 🌧️⛈️🌦️ I love the dualism - in being peaceful in one moment and turbulent the next. Sporadic and uncontrollable yet sustaining. Storms are a metaphor for life. It applies to pain, loss or feelings of helplessness but also strength and resilience. Change can be challenging but those who embrace it, understand both the beauty and strife of transformation. For this reason, butterflies have always been an important symbol to me, both personally and professionally. If I'm in my studio stressing over a project or sitting out in the garden stuck in a stubborn phase, butterflies remind me to let go and just be. It's very easy to focus on a butterflies beauty. Interestingly enough, it isn't trying to be a butterfly or even beautiful for that matter. It's just being.
