I actually love complex piece-of-shit characters. I love them a lot. Not even just as a psych nerd, but as a human being, because no matter how shitty and terrible and awful they are, you still see yourself in them. Not necessarily in their actions and morals, but in the ways they try to break patterns and fail. In the ways they fall apart when they realize they did it again. I see humanity in them. And yeah, I’ll still hate them, because hate is not the opposite of love, and because they embody all the things I wish I wasn’t. But hating them is what allows me to love them, because I can turn off the TV and close the book, but I can’t step away from myself.
