All about fairies
Do you believe in fairies?
Remember that part of Peter Pan where they asked you to help bring the fairies back to life? Remember the words? “I do believe in fairies, I do, I do, I do.” Please say them. Say them often.
What are fairies?
Fairies are light beings who belong to the earth realm. They are here to watch over mother earth, and are particularly fond of plants and animals. Often plants and animals will be surrounded by fairies. Fairies also like to party. Famous for drinking mead and dancing in rounds, fairies like to stay up all night, to dance and play and play tricks on people just for fun.
Have you ever tried to draw one?
We dare you to do it now. Trickier than you’d imagine, right? Fairies resist being drawn. Tricksters by nature, fairies don’t want to be pinned down. They also like to play tricks on humans, because they find them fun. Remember Shakespeare’s Puck? Mucking up love spells? Although it seems Puck did this out of honest confusion (Hermia for Helena, Demetrius for Lysander), it’s not so hard to imagine that Puck also just like getting all turned around and inside out and upside down.
Fairies are good at hiding car keys, buzzing around your ears to irritate you, getting you caught in strange situations, so it’s good to be on their good side. The images that we often get of sweet, darling fairies are a Victorian glossing over of the ancient and complex fairy creature. In his book Good Faeries/Bad Faeries, Brian Froud does an incredible job of drawing fairies (he clearly communicates with them). It’s clear from his drawings that the happy go lucky, pastel colored renderings are only one side of the coin. Like humans, fairies are multi-layered and they have shadow sides.
Image: Brian Froud
How do I get on a fairy’s good side?
Walk out in nature and tell the fairies you’d like to connect with them, that you’d like to work with them. Often, they will give you a task to see if you come with honest intentions and want to help the environment. This could be something like cleaning up garbage left out in a natural setting. You will know what the task is. If you make environmental awareness and friendliness a priority in your life, you’re well on your way to making friends of the fay folk.
Fairies like shiny things and sweet things. You can leave an offering of tin foil, shiny jewelry, chocolate, or honey on your window sill or in nature for them to play with.
What is fairy school?
Fairy school is a new after school program channeled by three of our Reiki Masters, Lyndsey Harrington, Elyssa Jakim, and Lisa Levine. On the last day of a retreat in upstate new york, they spent an evening giggling like fairies and creating this program.
As healing arts practitioners, their intention is to hold a space for children to play and to explore their dreams, creativity, and connection to realms beyond the physical. Fairy School is open to boys and girls, fairies, elves and leprechauns between the ages of 5-12. Through a curriculum of healing arts, creative play, and studies in ecological awareness, fairy school aims to fill in the gaps left by contemporary schooling and modern living with tools for the imagination. Younger children will be guided through activities including meditation, arts and crafts, performance, dance, and lessons in fairy lore. Older children will also be introduced to more advanced arts such as herbalism, astrology, and crystal healing.
Lyndsey, Elyssa, and Lisa invite you to share in the fairy magic this Sunday at Maha Rose. There will be magic wand making, theater games, tea leaf readings, fairies, and so much more.

Crystal of the week: Shattuckite to speak your truth
When choosing crystals, I like to ask (outloud or silently) “which crystal is best right now, which friend will lead me to my highest good?” Then I put my non-dominant hand out, walk amongst the stones, and wait for a tug of “me, me, me!”
Today’s stone calling for attention is Shattuckite. Its bright turquoise and black and green color looks like a mini earth. It is vibrant and smooth—ot charmingly asks to be held and admired. Why now?
The sun is now in the air sign of libra, and air signs are largely about communication and the intellect. Now is a great time to communicate our desires, needs, wishes, selves. Shattuckite is a throat chakra stone and the throat chakra is the house of communication. It's through the voice that we express what is inside of us, our thoughts and feelings, to others--to the outside. The throat is also a place for taking in information (the beginning of the digestive process, breath, etc). A lot can get stuck there, especially if we're living and or working in an environment/with people where it seems important to "hold our tongue."
Now is also a great time to communicate with the divine...as we approach halloween, the veil this world and other worlds is thin . Shattuckite is a very powerful stone for connecting us with our psychic intuition, our spiritual guides, our higher selves, our deepest truths. It is also psychically protective: clearing past life curses and the energy of entities that do not belong to us. It is a wonderful stone for channeling, astrology, tarot and oracle cards (thanks The Book of Stones by Robbert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian). So take this puppy to Michael Domitrovich’s next Channeling class, and be the magic.
May you place this stone one your throat or third eye, breathe into it, and speak your truth to yourself and others and perhaps even the divine.
Is this getting a little witchy? Sure. But tis the season!

New moon crystal meditation tip: Garnet for your first chakra
In the summer, it's as though we're floating from one thing to the next. In the fall, it's nice want to come back to earth. The fall, after all, is about surrender, falling into mama earth.
Because Pluto is going direct (it's been retrograde since April 14), this new moon may bring a new connection to the first chakra. The first chakra, located at the very base of our torso, think genitals and perineum, ties us to the earth. I had a teacher who liked to say "this is our 'don't f*ck with me' chakra." We can feel the first chakra when we let go of the pole on the subway train and decide to root down to stay upright--the first chakra balances us. As many New Yorkers, and (people alive in this century) are living and working mostly in our heads, getting our first chakra on has soooo many benefits.
Garnet is a sexy stone. It makes me think about Cleopatra. This one is blackish with flecks of dark red. With its wine color, it speaks naturally of fall. It has a heavy, dense energy like my favorite grounding stones.
Here's a great meditation to do with a garnet:
Lie down with the garnet on your first chakra (you'll still feel it on top of your clothes, but don't be shy). Feel its heavy, comforting energy. Picture a dark red stream that flows into the center of the earth from the garnet and your first chakra. Breathe, breathe, breathe. Then, when you're connected, picture a bright red or orange prism leading from your first chakra to the sun and stars. Feel the support from the sun and the earth's center. Feel all the molten heat. Know that you're on fire.
Standing, you can hold the garnet in your hand and imagine a dark red wine colored triangle extending from your first chakra to the floor (like the natural v of your legs when you stand with your feet apart). Even a minute of this makes a big difference. This is a great and quick way to connect to your first chakra every day, and a great thing to do to ground yourself before you leave the house for those mean streets.
Take home message:
If you're needing some extra extra grounding to come home to fall, get a garnet friend today. You can even stick it in your pants. We won't tell anyone.
In other news, Luke Simon's band is called Sex Crystals. You can listen to it here.

10 Daily Steps to Keep your Summer Glow
Summer is coming to a close. Now that September is here, with its back-to-school feeling, it's more important than ever to keep our summer selves fresh in our minds.
You know the way summer feels on your skin -- as if you're expanding to the world? You know how you're more open when you've had a retreat, a vacation and you're relaxed? That doesn't have to fade -- you can carry that into your every day. Take that, September.
Here are my favorite ways to take a vacation every day:
1. Have a dance party. Do it right now. If you're sitting at your desk, go to the bathroom and jump up-and-down six to 10 times, take a power pose, or do your favorite dance maneuver -- just because.
2. Make 20 minutes a day that are just for you. Stretch, sing, draw, do yoga, meditate, do nothing, go for a walk, scream into a pillow. This is your time, so have a release or just relax.
3. Congratulate yourself each time you complete a task. Working with children, I was struck by just how much I said "good job!" I realized that as I grew up, people no longer said "good job" to me any more, or at least not in the same way. Tell yourself "good job" and "congratulations" when you've completed something, especially if it was something you didn't want to do.
4. Buy flowers for your desk and talk to them. One of the most exciting things that happened when I started practicing Reiki was that I could feel the energy of plants and flowers in a new, deep way. Flowers are listening. The more you give to them the more you'll feel love from them. Plus, summer's wild freedom comes largely from a connection to nature.
5. Paint your nails a crazy new color. Secret tip: the Sephora nail bar is a great place to refresh your look on your lunch break.
6. Call up an old friend and tell her you love her (or him) just because. Tell her all the reasons why. Feel your heart glow at the power of this little action. To recognize and give thanks to the love in your life sees that the love all around you grows.
7. Ask to pet a dog on the street. Spiritual leader Esther Hicks discusses the importance of finding joy every day. In one lesson, she teaches people a process for how to deeply connect to their inner joy. At the end she says, "or just go pet a dog." Animals help us be present, and they bring our hearts to a childlike place of freedom.
8. Send love into your food. In the summer we have time to sit and eat. Farm fresh corn is available. We may be more likely to stop by a Farmer's market and love up our fruits and vegetables. Whenever you sit down for a meal, place your hands over the food and give it a little thanks for the nourishment. Eating is a time of taking in the external world. If you pad your food in happy thoughts, it will integrate much more easily and your body will thank you. The effects of this practice can be profound.
9. Set an intention for your day. What do you want to get out of today? Do you want to feel more joy, openness, success, and abundance? Do you want to love more or experience ease? If we give ourselves a sense of purpose, everything gets easier, especially getting up in the morning. You can check in before bed: "What was my intention?" "What did I learn?" "What did I accomplish?"
10. Look for opportunities to unplug. Whenever, wherever, however. Turn off your phone; don't just put it on silent. If you go to a yoga class, if you're playing with your kids for an hour, if you're at the movies, if you're in a meeting, if you're taking a walk, turn it off. It declares "My time is my time and I'm not available right now," and "I'm fully present in what I'm doing." This is a powerful vacation.
Incorporating just one of two of these into your daily routine can add ease into your life in significant and surprising ways. Little actions such as these will smooth the stress and keep you in touch with your summer joy.
Did you take a break today? Great job!

Difficult to digest? How to have a love affair with Herbal Honey Balls
I have never liked potty humor or potty mouthes. Even at age 5, I cringed when other kids made fart noise jokes. "Wash their mouths out with soap!" I shouted. So, when an eleven year old read me Everybody Poops last week, I was duly mortified. No one had ever read me that shit.
But then, Milan Kundera calls kitsch the absolute denial of shit, and I will not be a champion of kitsch. Plus, I want to talk to you about digestion, which involves, um… so here goes... poop.
Do you have trouble with your digestion?
Entrance
Digestion. Hmmm, bringing outside elements into the most “inside” self—the body. Foreign invaders in my inner sanctum? But I don’t want them. Have you ever just not wanted to digest an idea? I cannot digest this information. I cannot accept that something has left, something will no longer be, or that something has come into my life unwelcome. I refuse to swallow it.
Exit
Have you ever just not wanted to let go of something even if it’s bad for you? I cannot let go of this. I cannot not text. I cannot let go of a particular situation, thought, emotion, habit, security safety blanket.
I’m supposed to make a foreign lover out of this once-invader and then softly let go of what’s not working in our relationship? Well, yes.
Ideally, the goal is integrate the other with self and there find nourishment, give the outside world a home inside, a well-adjusted home that promptly disposes of the garbage.*
Some digestive love
If your relationship with the foreign is less than a love affair, I HIGHLY recommend the following recipe. Explained in this very sketchy video starring yours truly.
This recipe is from Robin Rose Bennett’s The Gift of Healing Herbs--Plagiarism is bad, kids! As are poop and farting jokes, I really hate them.
1/4 cup calendula leaf
1/4 cup slippery elm powder
1/4 cup turmeric powder
1/4 cup cinnamon powder
1/4 cup powdered plantain leaf (dried leaf works too)
5/8 cup raw/organic/local/yummy/rose honey (or as much as you need)
Eat 1-2 cherry-size portions a day. The flavor is strong, but I find them yummy. I like to mix them in yogurt, or with peanut/almond butter and banana for dessert. They keep for a long time in or out of the fridge.
Honey balls help with bloating after eating, trouble with taking in loving nutrients or... constipation (I typed it). Slippery elm in particular makes the whole digestive tract, well, slippery and promotes smooth passage of foreign invaders as well as the faithfulness foreign lovers, looking to nourish and adore you.
A little more love
I ask you to give your body and digestive difficulties some love in the digestive process whenever possible. It'll smooth things, I swear, and also maybe just add some bright lightness to your day.
Here are some suggestions for infusing these honey babies with healing energy:
- As you create the honey balls, see the beauty of each element of the concoction. I think the calendula leaves are particularly beautiful and I get so excited to handle them...say thank you beauties! Thank mother earth for her bounty and ask her to send healing love to you.
- As you consume the honey balls, think about them coating your insides with happy loving warmth and support. Or just enjoy their taste.
- Spend a few minutes thinking about what you've been holding on to and breathe it out. You can even breathe in on "let" and out on "go." Let go. Let go.
*For the delicate pinpointing of this phenomenon, I’d like to again credit and thank Robin Rose Bennett’s The Gift of Healing Herbs. For a more in-depth look at the biology of digestion, she’s a wonderful place to start. But rest assured, the “flowery” foreign lover metaphor is the child of my off-kilter imagination, friend puppies.
