Binasal occlusion is a method of partially covering the visual field of a person's two eyes. Specifically, the sector of the visual field that is adjacent to the nose would be blocked (see photo). According to a 2017 study, the tape provides a stationary reference point that the brain can use to help decode the incoming visual information. In contrast to an eyepatch that occludes the whole visual field of one eye, binocular occlusion allows some degree of binocular vision for both eyes. This emphasizes the role of binocular functioning in PERIPHERAL VISION (objects that are located to the right can only be fixated by the right eye, and objects located to the left can only be fixated by the left eye). The left eye and right eye send what they see to the right and left brain. The brain then forms a whole image with both sides inputed visual stimuli. By blocking parts of the image that would be seen by both eyes, binocular occlusion reduces visual stress and allows the brain to create a whole image. Binasal occlusion is used in treatment of patients with sensory deficits due to #concussion, #cte, #abi, #traumaticbraininjury, or having had a #stroke, as well it showed benefits for patients diagnosed with #adhd.
