So my fic bunny tells me to write a Beauty and the Beast-inspired AU. Lightning, recalling vague memories of the past, has been searching for the rest of the party across Europe. She alights at a small town in France. Her interest is piqued by reports of a beast in the woods. Ends up with a huge ass white castle, where Hope resides in a monstrous form that's reminiscent of Bhunivelze. Hope remembers everything but doesn't tell her it's him. He'd befallen a final curse after refusing to be reborn as his parents' child, and he can only assume his fine ass human form if he manages to unlock 'what had been sealed' in another time, another place. He tries to make her remember before the Yggdrasil dies.

Hope's Appearance in the Ending

According to the recently released Lightning Returns Ultimania book, Hope’s younger appearance during the ending cinematic was only a “temporary form”. He still looked like a child, but his soul was that of a 27-year-old. Although further details were not stated, this highly suggests that Hope was able to return to his adult body after he was reborn into the new world.

My way of writing lines, using indents instead of double line breaks, gets a little weird on tumblr and ff. If the layout annoys you, you should probably read it on Ao3 instead. (No, I won’t use double line breaks. All my favorite authors use indents, and that’s how I’ve always written dialogue. Sorry.)

He Fell into Shadow (Pre-LR; LR Spoilers)

My take on those 169 years pre-LR.

It was the 331st year. Every day was a battle after the Goddess died.

Hope thought, as he geared up for another skirmish, that it didn't matter. Lightning fought an endless battle in Valhalla. She probably felt the same way.

That day he was pulled by an unseen force. He fell into shadow.

As he floated beyond time and space, he wondered if this was the same place she was brought to when she disappeared by the crystal pillar.

There was nothing. No voice spoke to him in this perfect isolation. Yet he felt a divine light within. It coaxed him to reveal his heart.

He asked himself whether she believed in the divine, if Etro ever spoke to her, and if she submitted herself willingly as her knight.

Then came the pain. Pain that seared through his flesh and bones, breaking and unbreaking him in a maddening rhythm. Visions of his mother falling over, and over, and over. A rose-tinted dream of everyone being together eaten by a nightmare of chaos and death. Faces of the nameless demanding atonement. He was taunted and adored all at once.

He worried that she might have endured the same to serve a god.

169 years passed thinking, wondering, questioning, and worrying until it numbed him. Until Hope felt himself fading away.

When the last of his strength left him, he heard a voice. A voice that sounded familiar. He realized that the voice was his own.

It promised a final act of kindness. That he shall see her again and fight with her 13 days before the world ends.

Then light engulfed him. God's will be done.

If the goodbye scene, tortured-by-Bhuni-before-final-boss-battle scene, and hand reach scene had adult!Hope in it, people will probably view these scenes as romantic because hey look at these attractive adults!!! Now imagine the backlash from non-fandom communities. Hope is a polarizing enough character in FXIII and is still remembered as a whiny brat. Pairing him up romantically with Lightning is more trouble than it's worth (for Squeenix and the fandom). By having Hope as a kid, anyone can interpret those key scenes as they wish. Hopurai shippers, no matter what, will write post-epilogue fic anyway. But ship or no ship, yay for Squeenix and their focus on Hope and Lightning's bond! I didn't expect much and thought it will be a side story at best, but it turned out to be more than that.

Soooo in short I'm really happy with LR and even if I spoiled myself rotten with the Japanese playthroughs that I don't understand, I have a feeling that the English release will ruin my heart anyway.

One drunken man sends Lightning on a quest for high end booze before agreeing to a request. Lightning is also able to purchase beer and tequila at bars and consume the items to replenish health. The words “a*s,” and “bastard” appear in the dialogue.”
